Black hole photo finally revealed

It was announced on Wednesday that scientists have finally been able to capture a photo of what has been thought to be unseeable. The black hole measures 40 billion km across and is located in the Messier 87 galaxy, which is estimated to be 55 light-years away from Earth.

The hole is surrounded by a large ring with red, orange and yellow hues, which according to BBC resembles a “ring of fire.” It took more than 200 researchers, eight radio telescopes and over a decade to obtain a photograph. According to an interview from BBC, the image that was captured is similar to the theoretical calculations made by Einstein about what they may look like. The photo will now enable researchers to further study the physics of black holes.

Raleigh among most pollinated U.S. cities

OPINION

Raleigh currently ranks among the top five cities in the U.S. with the highest pollen concentration. Following only Tulsa, Oklahoma; Waco, Texas; Springfield, New Jersey; and Georgetown, Texas, Raleigh’s pollen count was 1778.8 grains per cubic meter of air Tuesday.

The Weather Channel characterized this as very high in terms of tree pollen, high in grass pollen and low in ragweed pollen. Breathing comfort levels were also categorized as poor in the area. According to WRAL, the record for highest pollen count in Raleigh is 3,524 grains per cubic meter in 2010, when Winston-Salem also reached almost 10,000 grains per cubic meter. Photographer Jeremy Gilchrist captured a picture of the pollen on Monday, which created a yellowgreen haze covering central N.C. Pollen levels going into the weekend vary from very high to moderate.

Raleigh teachers’ rally approaches The N.C. Association of Educators is organizing a protest on May 1 for teachers across the state to lobby lawmakers on issues such as higher pay and expanded Medicaid. Last year, a teacher protest led by the same organization brought in over 19,000 protesters, which helped lead to increases in education funding within the state. The protest also forced 1 million students to stay home because of the number of schools that closed due to the lack of teachers. There are five demands that they are asking for lawmakers to address: provide enough librarians, psychologists, social workers and health professionals for students; install a $15 minimum wage; expand Medicaid; reinstate state retiree benefits that were eliminated in 2017; and restore advanced degree compensation that was stopped in 2013. Six school districts have already announced they will be closed on the day of the rally, and State Schools Superintendent Mark Johnson has said he opposes the effort made by the protest organizers.

Tapingo keeps business thriving and student workers busy Julia Robbins Correspondent

Tapingo quickly became popular after NC State partnered with the app in November 2015 and has since kept dining employees constantly working on large amounts of mobile orders.

Tapingo is a mobile app that allows customers to order food for delivery or pick-up.

According to NC State Dining, Tapingo allows customers to pay using a credit card, meal plan or AllCampus student account.

Currently, it is offered at 14 different dining locations on campus.

While Tapingo has proven to make ordering easier for students on campus, the app’s enormous popularity has caused incorrect wait time estimations and a backlog of orders.

Allie Davis, a third-year studying accounting, currently works at Port City Java in Talley Student Union. Davis said she feels that Tapingo can be stressful when trying to close at the end of the day, and the app could be improved by shutting it down 30 minutes prior to closing.

“When we are closing at 10:30 sometimes, we get like 10 [drink orders] on Tapingo at 10:28,” Davis said. “We are still making those drinks when we are doing a bunch of cleaning and trying to close.”

Shawn Hoch, interim senior director of hospitality services, said his goal is to support students who need food when studying at all times during the day and night.

However, he said that an exception to providing that service would be if there were a multitude of orders coming in the minute before closing time. “[If] we have 50 people, let’s say at 11:59

p.m., that are submitting an order as we close, we may need to figure that out,” Hoch said. “I will have to go look and see what the orders are in the last few minutes of the shift.”

Leif Eckstrand, a second-year studying materials science and engineering, is a student worker at Jason’s Deli. Eckstrand said he believes that the time estimations on Tapingo are frequently incorrect and that it can cause issues for students who are in a hurry.

“Since I have been there, I have noticed

people come, see if their order wasn’t there and leave and never show up, and then we have orders that did not get picked up,” Eckstrand said.

Randy Lait is the senior director of administrative services for campus enterprises and has worked at NC State for 35 years.

Lait played a large role in partnering NC State with Tapingo and explained that time estimations have been an issue from the beginning of its usage.

designed into the system in a complex way,” Lait said. “On a college campus when classes let out, it’s a real flood of people, and so what we found is that you’d get this flood of orders that would come in, and it required a better way of addressing a lot of orders in a short window.”

According to Lait and Hoch, NC State is currently working on solutions to increase customer and worker satisfaction with Tapingo, such as renovating the Starbucks in Talley Student Union this summer in order for the cafe to run more efficiently.

Despite Tapingo having some issues, it continues to bring in multiple orders to dining locations throughout the day and has been shown to help students in a hurry between classes.

Anand Srinivasan, a graduate student in industrial engineering, works at Los Lobos.

Srinivasan agrees that while Tapingo can be overwhelming during rush hours, it is a useful tool for students and is good for business.

“Students can order from their classes, so it makes their time more valuable,” Srinivasan said.

One dead following explosion in Durham Staff Report

Around 10:07 a.m. on Wednesday morning, a building in downtown Durham exploded as a result of a gas leak, leaving one person dead and 17 injured.

Wil Glenn, public affairs manager at the Durham Police Department, said in a video posted on Durham Police’s Twitter account that the explosion occurred at 115 North Duke St. “A gas leak was caused by a contractor who was [drilling] under the sidewalk,” Glenn said. “He hit a two-inch gas line, which caused an explosion and a partial building collapse.”

Durham Fire Chief Bob Zoldos explained the events leading up to the explosion and actions taken afterwards through a livestream on WRAL’s website.

“At 9:38 this morning, fire units were dispatched for a gas leak in the 100 block of Duke street,” Zoldos said. “Durham Fire Department Engine One arrived to find a significant gas leak, requested additional

resources, including Dominion Energy, and started an evacuation in cooperation with the Durham Police Department.”

At 10:07, in the middle of the evacuation, the explosion occurred, which impacted five buildings on the block, according to Zoldos. This left 17 people injured, including a firefighter.

After the explosion, a significant fire arose, which was contained by the Durham Fire Department. Everyone known to be in the building has been accounted for, but additional investigations are still ongoing, Zoldos said.

“This will take some time to go through a very detailed search and rescue operation,” Zoldos said. “This could possibly go for a couple of days, during these operations some of the downtown will be shut down.”

Students in the Durham School of the Arts, which is located nearby, were evacuated as soon as it was confirmed safe to leave, according to WRAL. The source of the gas leak still cannot be

confirmed until investigation is complete, according to The News & Observer. Several people were taken to Duke University Hospital where six people were in critical

condition, others were taken to Duke Regional Hospital and one individual was taken to the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center.

Bragaw parking lot construction anticipated to end before fall semester Sofia Gonzalez Bertello Correspondent

The current construction next to Bragaw is the beginning to the summer-long project to enlarge the sewers and add storm drains throughout Central Campus. This initiative required covering up a portion of Lee Lot as the early stages of construction began.

Because of the growing number of students, projects like these are necessary to provide adequate space on campus.

Charlie Marshall, the associate director of construction management, talked about what to expect in terms of construction over the next few months.

“This project has two components to it,” Marshall said. “Both of them are to improve the existing services that are already there...

One is a sanitary sewer, because the existing sewers are too small and don’t have the capacity needed for everybody in the future. The other part is a storm drain to control rainwater.”

Although this project is intended to extend its reach to most of Central Campus, Marshall says the construction is expected to be ready

before students come back for the fall.

“We expect this project to be done by the time school starts back up in the fall, as long as too much rain doesn’t interfere, and the parking spots will be back to the way they were,” Marshall said.

Because students are still occupying most of campus, the project cannot fully begin until classes and finals have ended and there is less pedestrian traffic.

“While the students are here, the construction is just in the Lee Lot,” Marshall said. “On May 13th, the construction will expand because the students won’t be here.”

Because some parking spots have been taken up by the construction going on, students have had concerns about parking.

Hannah Cole, a second-year in the College of Sciences, spoke about how the construction has affected where she parks on campus because of the lack of effective parking for students.

“Since the parking lot will become full quicker during move-out… some people are going to have to park in the Sullivan Lot and have to walk more with their items,” Cole said.

blocked off in Lee Lot, more students had to park in the other section of the Resident West lot.

“They made more people have to go from Lee Lot to Sullivan Lot, which is just more inconvenient than anything else,” Cole said.

Chris Dobek, the parking services manager, said over email that the university undersold the Resident West lots to compensate for the parking spots being taken up by construction, and all the parking spots will go back to normal in the next school year.

Pan-Afrikan Week celebrates black culture, identity on campus Austin Dunlow Correspondent

Pan-Afrikan Week is an annual event hosted by the University Activities Board and the Black Students Board that focuses on uplifting and celebrating the black students and black culture on NC State’s campus. Events throughout the week will highlight black culture and the experience of being black at a predominantly white institution.

Christian Carter, a third-year studying sociology and the chair of the Black Students Board (BSB), said that Pan-Afrikan Week gives black students on campus a chance to celebrate themselves and to be celebrated by others.

“Pan-Afrikan Week is a week given to the black students and students of African descent where we really get to celebrate our blackness and where we come from,” Carter said. “It’s just our week to have fun and be around each other and congregate that people look forward to every year.”

Naomi Ejim, a fourth-year studying Africana studies and the president of the African Student Union (ASU), said that the goal of Pan-Afrikan Week is to make students of African descent feel comfortable on campus. “[Pan-Afrikan Week] is by the members of the African Diaspora, for the members of the African Diaspora,” Ejim said. “It’s important to me because, being a minority on State’s campus, more often than not a lot of programs that the university puts on are not for people who look like me. It gives me the opportunity to be my unique self and no one can check me.”

Carter said she felt that Pan-Afrikan Week is important to keep the number of students of color on campus from decreasing any more than it already has. In fall 2008, black students made up 8.5% of NC State’s total enrollment, compared to 5.8% in fall 2018, according to the Office of Institutional Research and Planning.

“NC State is a primarily white institution, so that can be really hard on a lot of black and brown students on campus,” Carter said. “Our numbers here at State have been dwindling the last couple of years, so it’s definitely more important now than ever to keep our students uplifted and comfortable and to make them feel safe and like they belong on this campus as much as anyone else.”

According to Carter, Pan-Afrikan Week is also an opportunity to highlight black organizations on campus and the work that they do.

to program, which is something we’ve done in the past as well,” Carter said. “It’s not just about BSB, but about BSB helping other organizations and other black organizations be uplifted and do what they want to do as well.”

ASU was one of the outside organizations that is brought in to help program for Pan-Afrikan Week, Ejim said.

“A SU ac t u a l ly starts Pan-Afrikan Week,” Ejim said.

“The first Saturday of Pan-Afrikan Week every year is African Night. That’s how we give our little bit of involvement in the week and kind of bring it back to the motherland.”

The theme for this year’s Pan-Afrikan Week is “Watch the Throne,” which is meant to celebrate the royalty in every individual, Carter explained. “‘Watch the Throne’ basically means claim-

ing your throne or your royalty and what makes our students royal,” Carter said. “This is more than just our lineage, but it’s the stuff we do, our culture, the clothes we wear, our dances and everything like that. It’s just saying that we’re all worth celebrating.”

Ejim says that not everyone is satisfied with how Pan-Afrikan Week is being presented. She says that some groups on campus still don’t feel represented during the week.

“I think [University Activities Board] does a great job of planning Pan-Afrikan Week; however, I think there’s always room to grow,” Ejim said.

“There’s recently been a lot of conversation about how Pan-Afrikan Week isn’t as inclusive to other parts of the African Diaspora besides Africans and African-Americans, but I feel like that’s a two-way street. The com-

munities that want to be represented need to come forth, and BSB needs to also give them a larger platform to come forth, but I definitely feel like BSB is doing the best that they can right now.”

Looking forward, Carter is excited about the future of Pan-Afrikan Week, saying she hopes Pan Afrikan Week’s 50th anniversary is the largest event yet.

“It gives black students that sense of ‘We see you, we hear you, and we’re doing this for you,’” Carter said. “Next year is our 50th anniversary so that’s really exciting. It should be bigger and better than ever. So, look forward to that.”

Pan-Afrikan Week will continue to host events through the rest of the week with the African American Textile Society’s Annual Fashion Expose on April 11 at 6:30 p.m., the DanceVisions Annual Spring Concert on April 12 at 7 p.m., a Tent Party on April 13 at 1 p.m., the National Pan-Hellenic Council’s Pan-Afrikan Stroll Off on April 13 at 6 p.m. and the Silent Disco on April 13 at 11 p.m..

Rural NC needs Medicaid expansion A key policy that Americans seek to hear about from their elected officials is their stance on healthcare – and for good reason. In 2016, average American spendKevin Moye ing on healthcare reached another all-time high of Staff Columnist $10,345. For most people, healthcare is an unavoidable expense that just keeps rising.

While we are still a long way away from being universal beneficiaries of social welfare programs like Medicare for All, Medicaid is still a large and impactful program. Established in 1965 by President Lyndon B. Johnson, Medicaid supplies healthcare access to millions of struggling Americans of all ages unable to afford insurance. Most Medicaid recipients are single parents, children, people with disabilities, low-income seniors or lowincome pregnant women.

North Carolina House Democrats and Gov. Roy Cooper are stepping in the right direction with their proposals to expand Medicaid access. Their proposal would make individuals living within 138% of the federal poverty line eligible for Medicaid. This push to expand access could provide healthcare for around 300,000-500,000 North Carolinians.

Medicaid expansion is perhaps the most beneficial in states like North Carolina, where large swaths of our state are rural areas. Rural counties are often inhabited by many citizens at the lower end of the income spectrum. In our state, the 20 highest poverty rates all belonged to rural counties.

With much of the rural population living in poverty, many of the patients that enter rural hospitals are uninsured. And because individuals without health insurance are less likely to go to healthcare practitioners for minor ailments, they often wait until their conditions have become severe. The treatment of these individuals, while moral and just, leaves healthcare providers and the hospital uncompensated. This continued treatment of patients without insurance leads these hospitals into states of bankruptcy, causing them to shut down.

Since 2010, North Carolina has seen a substantial number of potentially avoidable ru-

ral hospital closures. We are in a group of six southern states which have experienced five or more rural hospital closures since 2010 — all of which have forgone any Medicaid expansions.

Expansion of Medicaid has been assessed to greatly improve the state of rural hospitals. The medical journal Health Affairs published a study t hat fou nd t hat “Medicaid expansion was associated with improved hospital financial performance and substantially lower likelihoods of closure, especially in rural markets.”

Democrats in the House and Gov. Cooper must hold steadfast in this reasonable expansion of Medicaid eligibility.

Since the Affordable Care Act was passed in 2010, permitting states to more easily expand Medicaid via federal funding, 36 states have utilized this feature. North Carolina happens to be one of the 14 states that have not had any expansions in that 8-year period.

aware of NC’s need for Medicaid expansion; however, they continue to bring unfit policy proposals to the table.

A 2017 Republican proposal would have expanded Medicaid to those that were employed or actively looking for employment.

In addition to the employment clause, this proposal also would have forced the Medicaid beneficiaries to pay a monthly premium for what is supposed to be a free program.

Such a proposal would have failed to incorporate all of the people that are in need of healthcare while also setting an economic burden on those that did qualify for the program. Democrats must ensure that their expansion of Medicaid coincides with the righteous purpose of giving healthcare access to as many Americans in need as possible.

Republicans in turn must step up to the table and pass laws that would benefit thousands of their constituents.

For a state that has truly seen the pitfalls of not expanding Medicaid, North Carolina must make Medicaid expansion a non-negotiable issue. Access to proper healthcare should not be reserved for those fortunate enough to afford it. For our state to continue to be a prosperous place for all people, we must see that healthcare is treated not as a privilege, but as a universal right.

Learn something new with your literature requirements Unless you graduated high school with a boatload of AP literature credits, you’re probably planning out what to take and when for your required literature courses here at Colin NC State. Most, if not all of McKnight Staff Columnist us, will ignore the “what” of the courses we take and instead just focus on something easy and at a convenient time.

This is understandable, since we’re all a bunch of overworked students who rarely have the luxury to take a really interesting general course of our choosing. However, if you can afford such a luxury in your tight schedule, you should take some time deciding what to take.

While it’s tempting to take something that may already be interesting to you – like science fiction or the ever-present western

fiction – I’d argue that you ought to be expanding a narrow amount of knowledge in an unfamiliar subject area. There is a litany of specialized and in-depth literature courses here. Don’t settle for just the easy way out. Take one of the many courses about a group of people you may be unfamiliar with and broaden your horizons for when you go out into the world.

I should acknowledge that I’m currently taking this kind of literature class, and I’ve also taken a standard American literature class. And while I enjoyed the latter, the former has made me realize that the high school I attended barely scratched the surface of the entire literary community.

I almost went through my whole time here at NC State without taking a class in an unfamiliar area of literature because it wouldn’t be “convenient.”

But you shouldn’t let that convenience dictate everything you put on your plate

here at college. Marc Dudley, a professor of literature here at NC State, said, “I think that whatever you choose to take, that’s fine, but in the back of your mind, as a student, you should have a caveat, and that is to learn as much as you can. When else in your life are you going to learn so much in such a constricted amount of time?”

Adrienne Rivera wrote, “What makes the history of women’s writing so interesting is that in many ways it is a new area of study.

The tradition of women writing has been much ignored due to the inferior position women have held in male-dominated societies.” This can apply to all the groups I’m discussing here. The pantheon of “great literary art” has for centuries been dominated by white male authors, and while many of their works certainly are great, it’s only a fraction of the excellent literature out there.

While you may be comfortable with these areas, you’re missing out by sticking

to them. As Dudley put it, “for somebody who’s a science major or an engineering major, you spend a lot of time on another part of campus, not exposed to this kind of thing, and maybe it’s a culture shock being exposed to a classroom setting like this. Part of my mission as an ambassador to this mission is to expose you to something different and get you to empathize a bit more.”

Last weekend on Saturday April 6, J. Cole’s music festival, Dreamville, debuted at Dorothea Dix Park in Raleigh. The festival had been postponed from its original premiere date in September due to Hurricane Florence moving through North Carolina. The multi-stage festival featured a variety of big name hip-hop, rap and R&B artists. Nearly 40,000 people attended the one-day festival.

Although it had rained all day Friday, the muddy ground and unfortunate weather conditions didn’t stop the festival attendees from dancing and having a good time. Additionally, the rescheduled nature of the festival seemed to have little effect on the atmosphere and proceeded with few hiccups.

Mel Pagar, a second-year student in the College of Engineering, attended the festival. He

shared his opinions on the festival as his first live music experience in an interview over email.

“Overall, the festival was absolutely amazing,” Pagar said. “Everything was beautiful from the artwork to the sets. It was all just thoughtfully laid out. There were various art pieces of things like the Raleigh skyline and Nipsey [Hussle] and Mac Miller tributes and other cool pieces scattered throughout the park that was just beautiful.”

Recently, Dorothea Dix Park has undergone significant renovations making it a great venue to show off Raleigh’s progress to tourists. There were two main stages in which acts performed and alternated: “Rise” stage and “Shine” stage.

Some people stood for about eight hours to keep their spot for J. Cole and the other main acts.

Dreamville is Raleigh’s newest music festival with a focus on hip-hop, and the lineup included artists from a variety of its sub-genres. One of the first artists to perform was EarthGang.

EarthGang is known for songs with raw energy, and their live performance carried that same intensity. The duo’s unique music matched

their styles. Johnny Venus wore sniper’s camo as a robe, exposing a bulletproof vest paired with a plaid kilt. His partner, Doctur Dot, wore a black and white striped t-shirt. The pair absolutely rocked it, especially when performing their song “Up,” which has previously only been performed on YouTube.

Another artist who played the festival was Rapsody. Rapsody, originally from Snow Hill, North Carolina, began her music career while

attending NC State and is now a Grammynominated artist. Bas was next, and his bright lime green shirt and reflective sunglasses matched his colorful, energetic, yet suave and cool performance.

VOLAR blends community service, Spanish culture Antonio Dinkens Correspondent

There are many opportunities for students to reach out to their communities on NC State’s campus. Voluntarios Ahora en Raleigh, or VOLAR, is one such opportunity for those who wish to help Raleigh’s Spanish-speaking community. The program is run through the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature. Deborah Kane, a senior lecturer in Spanish language and literature, is the director of VOLAR. “We started out as an initiative of the Foreign Language Department here at NC State to pair students of Spanish at a certain level of proficiency with community service opportunities where they can interact with native Spanish speakers,” Kane said.

VOLAR does two different types of community service: semester long opportunities as well as one time service opportunities.

“One category is semester-long commitments, where students go once a week. They do a regular shift, maybe an hour a week every week or two hours every other week,” Kane said. “It depends on the organization. The other is one-time events, so they may go and work three hours on one Saturday... Within those two categories, in the semester long commitments we have a partnership with the

to because he was too amped up, living up to his stage name. His “jittery” presence and energy immediately filled the stage. The intensity was matched by a mosh pit J.I.D started in the crowd. In an act of respect to those who didn’t want to participate, J.I.D instructed them move to the back, and everyone the pit went wild.

One of the most surprising performances was Big Sean. It’s obvious he’s a seasoned artist that cares about his craft and performance. He managed to get an enormous crowd to hold a moment of silence for recently shot and murdered rapper, Nipsey Hussle. Big Sean’s performance added a perfect ending to the daytime shows.

As night fell, 21 Savage took the stage. He played a solid, yet unremarkable set. SZA performed after on the other stage, but many people stayed at Shine in order to wait for J. Cole, the final act.

Cole himself did not disappoint. Cole played a long set with songs from his whole discography, such as “classics, not hits” from his early mixtapes including “The Come Up” and “Friday Night Lights.” Cole brought out surprise guest Meek Mill, and the pair performed the song “Dreams and Nightmares” and songs off of Mill’s latest album.

Their community outreach programs have a diverse reach within the Spanish-speaking community of Raleigh, helping in various programs in the Triangle.

“We have the Urban Ministries Open Door Clinic, which is a free health clinic for lowerincome residents of Raleigh,” Kane said. “So not all of their patients are Spanish speaking, but a lot are. Students will go there and work at the front desk and when people come in, check them in and make sure they have an appointment. They’ll make phone calls to confirm appointments; they might do the initial interview with the patients to establish that they are eligible to receive free or reduced healthcare.”

While there are not any strict guidelines for joining VOLAR, they do ask for a certain level of proficiency in Spanish to help with volunteer work in their community.

“So our requirements are that they need to be in Spanish 202 or above or have the same level of proficiency,” Kane said “That course

is just an easy way for us to know more or less where they are with the language, but if it’s someone that’s a heritage or native speaker or they have [spoken the language] extensively and they don’t have the coursework necessarily, we welcome their participation.”

Kane suggests that anyone who wishes to join should come to their meetings at the beginning of each semester.

“We just have a big meeting at the beginning of each semester, and that’s where we lay out all the different activities that are offered that semester and students can sign up,” Kane said. “We’ll have orientations usually for those semester long partnerships, there’s some training and things like that.”

Emily Sands, a lecturer of Spanish language and literature, is an assistant for VOLAR. Sands thinks that joining VOLAR helps bolster a student’s aptitude for learning Spanish and their desire to do so.

“I get feedback from the students that exposure gives them more confidence in using the language, and they’re exposed to more areas

Cole ended his set with a rendition of “Note to Self.” Fans know the song to be the final track off “2014 Forest Hills Drive.” Cole uses the last ten minutes of the song as the “movie credits” of the album. Similarly, he used the same song to conclude the festival. In the middle of the track, he stopped the music to explain his vision for the song as well as the festival.

“It’s talking about love, and when I look out, and I see all y’all come out, I feel like that’s the word that comes to mind,” Cole said. “We all here for the love of music, for the love of people, for the love of life.”

One special aspect of Dreamville was the festival’s connection to the local rap scene. Cole grew up in Fayetteville, which was part of his motivation for hosting a music festival in his home state. The festival also showcased local talents like King Mez, Lute and Rapsody. In an interview with WKNC, Mez commented on the impact of North Carolina on his music.

“If I wasn’t from North Carolina, I wouldn’t be as cool with that peace and that steady pace and that diligence,” Mez said. “This is a very introspective place… and I’m rooted and grounded because I’m from here. It made it easier to navigate the industry and not lose myself or lose my vision.”

Exhibiting local talent at a big music festival is important for many reasons. It allows North Carolina artists to put their names on the map and allows for a stronger connection between artists and their home communities.

that it can be used,” Sands said. “If the organizations that we already work with or other organizations can see that positive relationship then it might spawn more opportunities, or they might come up with more ways in which we can involve students in things.”

VOLAR is a chance to better understand Spanish speaking culture, learn Spanish and see the effects that the real world and decisions have on such a community.

“But what they don’t often realize is all the other side benefits, the cultural exposure, like going to the Mexican Consulate and being the only non-Mexican there for the hour that you’re there,” Kane said.

NC State hockey finishes with record-setting season Ryan Henkel Correspondent

What started as one goal, an ACCHL championship, quickly turned into another goal, and then another and another. This was the path that the NC State men’s club hockey team found itself on during its 201819 season.

The list of accolades is impressive for the Pack: an undefeated regular season, going 220-0 during that stretch with a plus-133 goal differential, an ACCHL regular season and tournament championship and a win over a Virginia team that beat them two years prior in the championship game. The Pack also had wins over Rider and Liberty, the hosting team in the ACHA D2 regionals, and qualified for the ACHA D2 Nationals, where the Pack won a game, finishing third in its pool.

“The ACC was our original goal,” said senior team captain Sam Banasiewicz. “Just kind of being on the borrowed time for regionals, our team hadn’t done that since I think it was 2004, even making it to regionals, so nobody really expected us to go there, and certainly we didn’t. Even to come out and win that first game, we were the first team from the ACCHL to win a regional game, let alone a second game, and qualify for nationals. I think it just goes to show how great this team was this year and what we were able to accomplish.”

Alongside the team’s achievements, the Wolfpack also had a few players receive individual honors. Banasiewicz was named ACCHL MVP and named to the ACHA D2 Southeast All-Region second team. Freshman Riley Johnson was named ACCHL Rookie of the Year, and graduate Eric Mura was named ACCHL Tournament MVP. Banasiewicz and Johnson as well as juniors Laythe Jadallah and Ian O’Rourke were also named to the ACCHL All-Star team for the ACHA D2 All-Star competition on April 12-14.

The Wolfpack didn’t do it alone. The team had the support of not only NC State fans, but also fans of North Carolina hockey. The Wolfpack started a GoFundMe to help raise money for its travel to nationals with an initial goal of $10,000, which was matched by an anonymous donor. This goal was smashed within seven hours of uploading the fundraiser. The community poured in support for the team, raising over $33,000 in a little over a month.

“People talk about how much money was

raised on GoFundMe, but I think the more important part was how many people pitched in.” said senior goaltender Joey Hall. “The final amount was over $30,000, but the fact that it came from like 300 people was even more impressive. I coach a 12-U local youth team, and I saw parents of kids I coached donating to it. It really touches you. It’s more than NC State’s team, it’s North Carolina’s, it’s Raleigh’s team.”

Officially, NC State’s winning streak for the 2018-2019 season was 27 games long, losing its only two games in ACHA Nationals pools.

The first loss came against top-seeded Massachusetts, and the only other loss they saw came in its final match of pools against Trine University.

The Pack still managed to pull off a win against second-seeded Northern Colorado between those two losses to really make a stand. With a win at that level, NC State solidified itself as a team capable of competing on the national stage.

“Our goal was just making a statement,” Banasiewicz said. “After losing the first match to UMass, we kind of realized that our chances probably weren’t the best to advance to the

semifinals, but we still wanted to come out. It wasn’t ‘Oh hey, let’s go have fun in Dallas for a week,’ it was more, ‘We still need to come out and play our best,’ and we were the first team from our league and out of franchise history to even get a win at nationals.”

A large calling card and phrase the Wolfpack had been running with was “silence the doubters,” an homage to the many that consider North Carolina a nontraditional and lackluster hockey team. However, NC State has shown everyone that it’s here to compete.

“We’re growing the game,” said senior alternate captain Ryan Kinney. “It’s been growing in the south for a while now, but just having a club hockey team from North Carolina State University has been monumental. Even the [Carolina] Hurricanes recognized what we were doing, with letting us play at PNC Arena and supporting us by giving us a portion of the sales for lower bowl tickets to help us get to Nationals. Even they recognized what a difference we were making for hockey in the south.”

An emotional journey for sure, the team spoke about one another as if they had known each other all their lives. This season formed

a bond that the team will always share, but for some of the older guys, including Banasiewicz and Hall, this was still their final season. “[My final game] was always in the back of my mind,” Banasiewicz said. “We were always trying to do our best, but in the back of our minds we knew, or at least I knew, it was going to be my last game. I’ve been here for five years, and it’s been a lot of fun. This was the best possible year to go out on, and this is the best this team has done in its history, so to be able to call it my last was an honor.”

Looking on to next season, the Pack is set to come back with the same expectations and spirit it showed this year. With returning faces and some new ones, it is up to returning players to step into the leadership roles that will be vacant.

“I’m looking forward to it,” Kinney said.

“We still have a good group of guys left. We are losing six seniors, so that’s not fun, but all we can do is hope we get some people willing to fill in the roles when they come in as freshmen or transfers, and that the guys returning from this year are willing to set an example for the new guys and show them what it takes to get to Nationals again.”

Wolfpack prepares for weekend trip against Fighting Irish Kailee Jurnak Staff Writer

NC State’s softball team will head to Indiana this weekend for a three-day competition against Notre Dame.

The Wolfpack (22-18, 3-9 ACC) will be entering this weekend with a clean slate from its last conference weekend against Syracuse, where the Pack was dealt two losses and one win.

Last season against the Fighting Irish (24-13, 7-5 ACC), the Wolfpack was destroyed in its first game 15-0 which was called in the fifth inning. Batters Katie Marino, Ali Wester and Abby Sweet accumulated six of the 15 runs.

The second game was a 4-1 win for the Pack.

Junior outfielder Angie Rizzi is the only returning player for the Pack who scored one of the four runs. The third game was cancelled and never rescheduled.

This season the Wolfpack has struggled against conference teams, having been swept by both Virginia Tech and Florida State. The

Pack has only won one ACC series against Boston College.

The Fighting Irish have had a slightly better conference season so far, winning all three games against Boston College during their ninth annual Strikeout Cancer weekend, taking the first game 11-0. However, the Fighting Irish faced a similar fate as the Pack against Syracuse and Florida State, losing two of the three games.

Even though the Wolfpack has managed to score up to 16 runs in a game this season during its third game against Boston College, the Pack usually scores about four runs compared to the Fighting Irish’s average of 5.4 runs a game.

The Pack’s freshman pitcher Sydney Nester has a 2.50 ERA, impressive for her first year compared to the Fighting Irish’s freshman pitcher Payton Tidd who has her team’s best ERA of 2.62.

The first game will start this Friday in South Bend, Indiana at 6 p.m.

Hurricanes ready to face ‘huge task’ in Capitals Andrew Schnittker Sports Editor

The Carolina Hurricanes face a tall order in their first playoff series since the 2009 Eastern Conference finals.

As the Eastern Conference’s first wild card, Carolina will open its first-round series Thursday in Washington against the Metropolitan Division champion Washington Capitals.

The Capitals, of course, come into the series battle tested. Washington won the Stanley Cup last year and returned a good chunk of its championship roster.

“They’re the best team for a reason,” said Canes head coach Rod Brind’Amour.

“They get you any which way. So for me, the impressive thing about their team is that they’ve learned how to win. They’re com for t able bei ng u ncom for t able.

They’re comfortable in the games that are 1-1, 1-0. It doesn’t matter how many chances they’re getting. They’re comfortable in playing their game because they know it wins.”

For the Canes, this will be new ground for a lot of this year’s roster. The team’s active roster for game one features 12 players who have never played in a Stan-

ley Cup playoff game.

That doesn’t mean Carolina is bereft of playing experience. Team captain Justin Williams has won three Stanley Cups, including one with Carolina in 2006. Forward Jordan Staal won a cup in 2009 with the Pittsburgh Penguins, and forward Teuvo Teravainen and defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk have won with the Chicago Blackhawks.

T hat pr ior exper ience w i l l be key for Carolina’s younger players to lean on as they go into their first playoff games. “ I t h i n k i t ’s a l l i m p o r t a n t ,” Brind’Amour said. “We have the older guy that’s been here, done it to show the younger guys, but then we have young guys who have tasted it too, so I think that helps, for sure, to have all different kinds of experiences in playing at this time of year. It’s a whole other kind of level of play. The more guys that have experienced it, it’s certainly helpful.”

And while the team knows making the playoffs for the first time in a decade is a major accomplishment, it’s far from satisfied.

Carolina’s goal all along was to get into the playoffs and make some noise. Step one is taken care of.

“We’re certainly expecting more,” Brind’Amour said. “This isn’t what we signed up for. We all understand it’s a huge task, but we’re not goi ng into this series not expecting to win, that’s for sure.”

Step two is now u n d e r w a y, a n d that starts with the Capitals. Carolina is familiar with Washington as a divisional opponent, with the teams squaring off four times in the regular season.

While Carolina finished the season series 0-3-1 against Washington, all four games were at least close entering the third period, and two were decided by one goal. The Canes know it’s a matter of finding that extra edge against a top

In order to have a shot in this series, Carolina will need to play a tight game against a top-tier offensive team. Washington finished the regular season averaging 3.34 goals per game, good for fifth in the league and third in the Eastern Conference.

As always, Washington’s offense starts with forward Alex Ovechkin, perhaps the best pure goal scorer of this generation. Ovechkin tickled the twine 51 times this season en route to his ninth career Rocket Richard Trophy as the league’s leading goal scorer.

off prowess during Washington’s cup run last season, posting 15 goals and 27 points in 24 games while on his way to winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Stanley Cup Playoffs MVP. Shutting Ovechkin down is probably too much to ask, but Carolina needs to find a way to contain him. A key player in that role will be Staal, a two-way forward often tasked with shutting down the opposition’s top players.

Staal will be able to draw on his experiences during Pittsburgh’s run in 2009, when he faced down Ovechkin in the Capitals in a second-round series.

“He was the same old Alex Ovechkin,” Staal said. “Obviously a dangerous player, a fast player, a powerful player and a guy that can score from a lot of different areas of the ice that most players can’t do. A player that you’ve got to be on top as you can. The little time and space he does have, he’s going to make the best of it, so you’ve got to take away as much as you can.”

Of course, the Caps’ threats don’t stop with Ovechkin. With 74 and 72 points, respectively, during the regular season, Nick las Backstrom and Evgeny Kuznetsov form one of the best 1-2 punches at center in the league. The likes of forwards TJ Oshie, Tom Wilson and Jakub Vrana bring secondary scoring, and John Carlson is an offensive threat from the blue line.

The Canes will need their deep, talented defense corps to be in top form, from the goal-scoring threats in Justin Faulk and Dougie Hamilton to shutdown blueliners Jaccob Slavin and Brett Pesce.

“We know it starts with Ovechkin and guys like Backstrom, Kuznetsov,” Pesce said. “Their first to fourth line, they have so much skill. We know that; we have to game plan for it. It’s a big challenge. It’s exciting to have the opportunity to face them and try and shut them down. As a defenseman, that’s the first thing I take pride in.”

Carolina’s also going to need good goaltending. Fortunately, the combination of Petr Mrazek and Curtis McElhinney have been up to the task all season.

Mrazek, in particular, enters the playoffs on a roll, having won 11 of his last 13 starts. Mrazek should be up to the task in the postseason, with a .927 save percentage and 1.98 goals-against average in 10 career playoff starts.

“I think the pressure’s high, the thing that you play for every game matters big time,” Mrazek said. “It’s been fun. All factors that should put you in a better position to be a better goalie.”

On the offensive side of the puck, Carolina will need all hands on deck against Capitals goalie Brayden Holtby. Holtby had a fairly pedestrian regular season with a 2.82 goals-against average and .911 save percentage but knows how to get it going in the playoffs. He went 16-7 with a .922 save percentage, 2.16 goalsagainst average and two shoutouts in Washington’s title run last year.

So, the Canes need to click on all cylinders. That starts with leading scorer Sebastian Aho, who set a career high with 30 goals and 83 points in the regular season. Aho, however, slumped down the stretch, with no goals and six points in his last 14 games.

Playing the Capitals could be just what the doctor ordered for Aho. Over his career, he has eight goals and 17 points in 12 games against Washington, his most against any team.

“Obviously you want to produce some points, but it’s all about wins this time of year,” Aho said. “That’s all that matters, and if we can get those wins, I’m happy.”

Joining Aho on the top line is forward Nino Niederreiter, who put up 14 goals and 30 points in 36 games since joining Carolina via a trade with the Minnesota Wild in January.

Rounding out that trio is Williams, who Carolina will be counting on big time after a 23-goal, 53-point regular

season given his experience. Williams has 36 goals and 94 points in 140 career playoff games, and has earned the nickname “Mr. Game 7” for his penchant for scoring clutch goals in the postseason.

“If you’re looking at the old ‘We’re underdogs; we’re this,’ obviously we’re underdogs,” Williams said. “We’re playing against the defending Stanley Cup Champions. But do we feel like we are?

No. We’re going to work our tails off and see how good we can be.”

Carolina will also be relying on Teravainen, who set a new career high with 76 points this season, to help lead the way, and the likes of Staal, Faulk, Hamilton and forwards Andrei Svechnikov, Micheal Ferland, Lucas Wallmark and Brock Mcginn to provide depth scoring.

While this is a tall task against Washington, Carolina has had a great year and is red hot coming into the playoffs. The Canes have the needed ingredients for playoff success and shouldn’t be counted

out.

It’s a tough challenge, but it’s one these Hurricanes are ready to meet.

“Playoff series, it’s unlike any other thing,” Williams said. “We know who we’re going to see for the next two weeks.

We know who we’re going to play. We know what kind of team they are. It’s just, at the end of the series, you either want to really, really make them earn it, or you want to be able to push them out of it. By saying that, at some point, somebody’s going to give and say it’s too hard. We’ve got to make sure it’s not us.”

The best-of-seven series will start Thursday at Capital One Arena with a 7:30 p.m. puck drop. Game two is Saturday at Capital One at 3 p.m. Games three and four at PNC Arena will be Monday, April 15 and Thursday, April 18 respectively. Game five would be Saturday, April 20 in DC, game six Monday, April 22 and game seven Wednesday, April 24 in Washington.
