On Easter Sunday, nine suicide bombers carried out attacks in Sri Lanka that killed more than 350 people and injured more than 500.

The attacks occurred in Colombo, Negombo and Batticaloa. The targeted churches were holding Easter services, sending a strong message to the Christian minority in the country. Multiple luxury hotels throughout the nation were also targeted. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for these attacks on Tuesday. Over 60 people have been arrested in relation to these attacks and the FBI is assisting in the investigation. However, Alaina Teplitz, an American ambassador, believes the terrorists attacks will continue.

Students protest police presence at UNC-Chapel Hill This Wednesday, hundreds of UNC-Chapel Hill students united to protest police involvement on campus. According to WRAL, protesters believed the university was “tough on anti-racist protestors but soft on white supremacists.” Students are particularly upset by the lack of police interference when members of a Confederate group, some of them armed, came to campus and police failed to arrest them, as required by law. In comparison, police presence was rampant when students gathered to protest the “Silent Sam” monument last year. The students attempted to submit a list of demands to UNC administrators only to find the front doors of the administration building locked. A neo-confederate group is anticipated to be on Chapel Hill’s campus next week, promising a counter protest.

‘Avengers: Endgame’ to hit theaters Thursday

On Thursday, April 25, the highly anticipated “Avengers: Endgame” will hit theaters. After more than 10 years and 20 films, many Marvel Cinematic Universe storylines are expected to come to a close. According to projections, the movie is likely to make over $250 million in its opening weekend. Additionally, if it beats the previous Avengers film, “Avengers: Infinity War”, it will be the biggest domestic opening weekend of all time. The contents of the film have been kept secret until it drops in theaters on Thursday in order to prevent potential spoilers.

Engineering Summer Camp sparks curiosity, connects students to campus Antonio Dinkens

During the summer, students from kindergarten to 12th grade come to NC State’s campus to participate in different engineering camps, including both residential and day camps. The goal of these camps is to educate young kids and teenagers about what the field of engineering encompasses.

Susan D’Amico, coordinator of engineering K-12 outreach extension, said that many people don’t have a full grasp of what engineering entails, so the purpose of the summer camp is to invoke curiosity within young students.

“We often call ‘E’ the ‘silent E of STEM,’ because people just don’t understand what engineers do,” D’Amico said. “What we try to do is make sure that everybody has an equal understanding ... of engineering, and that they realize how much it can relate to them.”

D’Amico said that the program is mostly funded by camp fees, with a little help from the rest of NC State or sometimes other private sponsors.

“I would love sponsors, because primarily I’m self-funded,” D’Amico said. “I don’t get any funds from any students on campus, so it’s primarily through camp fees and that is it.”

The day camp costs $425 per week and covers lunch, provided to campers daily in Clark Hall. The residential camp costs $925 and runs for five days, from Sunday to Friday, and the price includes campers’ meals as well as housing in university residence halls.

According to D’Amico, the camp also offers financial assistance to campers. However, there currently are not enough funds available to cover all students who may need financial aid.

Assistant Day Camp Coordinator Whitney McCoy, a Ph.D. student in educational psychology, spoke about their desire to reach out to as many groups as possible to help increase diversity in the field of engineering.

“Susan’s summers definitely speak to the population of people that we have in North Carolina, compared to the population of students that we have in engineering,” McCoy said. “We definitely know what the numbers of engineers look like, and she does the best during selection to try to make sure that we have a population that represents the people that we have across the state and not just who’s in there, so we can increase the pipeline.”

While there is a large focus on trying to get as many kids from diverse backgrounds in the camps as possible, the same effort is put forth when hiring the staff. The staff for the camps is made up of undergraduate students, high school students and trained teachers, and all are hired as paid employees.

McCoy also spoke about the different camps that are in session throughout the summer as well.

“There are seven weeks of day camps, from June 17 all the way through the first week of August,” McCoy said. “Our residential camps are rising 11th- and 12th-graders, and day camps are rising kindergarten through 10th grade.”

To become an undergraduate counselor, McCoy said to look for the job postings around December of each year.

“Around late December, we post on ePack,” McCoy said. “What we do is we send emails to every single engineering undergrad, and then we target the education majors that have taken a certain course, Dr. Bottomley’s course through the College of Education that teaches them about how to teach engineering. We put up signs, and then they go through ePack and have to apply.”

D’Amico said she thinks engineering camp is a good outreach opportunity for NC State so that students feel like the university is their home.

“The kids make some really good, strong connections with a college campus,” D’Amico said. “To feel like, ‘This is my place, and this is a place that I had some fun, this is a place I went,’ when they’re driving by on campus with their families and they can point, ‘I went there.’ This is something they can make a connection, and it kind of breaks down barriers.”

More UNC System schools to be approved after rewrite of voter ID law Jean Brannum Correpsondent

Following the approval of the controversial voter ID amendment, recently proposed legislation in the General Assembly would, if passed, allow more college student IDs to be used for voting purposes.

Originally, the law prevented many college IDs from being used. One such requirement of the law was that only pictures taken by colleges were valid. With

the new legislation, colleges can let students send in pictures for IDs as long as the school verifies citizenship as well.

With the change in rules, the state would approve every UNC System school ID for students to use it to vote, according to Brian Mathis, associate director of leadership and civic engagement.

“As long as the schools submit and follow the process, I feel fairly confident that the language is now more in line with university and community college and pri-

vate college’s admissions and enrollment processes and I think that was the biggest issue before,” Mathis said.

The law states that schools are still required to verify the citizenship status of incoming students so that their identity and picture are confirmed to vote.

Mathis also said the changes to the bill were supported by both parties in the General Assembly. The Democratic party was a strong opponent of the voter ID law. “[The bill] has bipartisan support,”

Mathis said. “It is expected that this bill pass and will be signed by the governor,” Mathis said.

The former requirements did not allow students to send in their own pictures for a proper ID. Schools such as UNC-Chapel Hill did not qualify for that reason.

Art2Wear highlights sustainability in fashion, showcases student creations Rachael Davis Managing Editor

On April 26 in Talley Student Union, eight art and design majors will showcase their fashion and costume collections to students, faculty and members of the Raleigh community at the Art2Wear show.

This year, the theme of the runway show is “circulatory,” which focuses on and brings awareness to sustainability in the fashion industry.

According to Tess Wiegmann, a third-year studying graphic design and the co-director of Art2Wear, the student team started planning the event during summer 2018. In addition, the designers of Art2Wear have been planning and creating garments since fall 2018.

Sara Bailey, a fourth-year in design studies and designer in Art2Wear, said it is important to be mindful of the impact clothing can have on the environment and how to reuse materials.

“T-shirts just get thrown away after they are used, but there’s nothing wrong with them; people are just tired of them,” Bailey said. “It is important to have a way to transform them into something else.”

Similar to Bailey, Emerson Burkhardt, a third-year studying art and design and a designer in Art2Wear, emphasized the importance of upcycling and reusing clothing.

“One of the most impactful things I have learned here is that a good percentage of the clothes you donate to Goodwill when you don’t want them anymore are just thrown away,” Burkhardt said. “Some people just don’t want them, so it’s important to find ways to reuse those items that nobody wants anymore.”

For her collection, Bailey upcycled all of her pieces and used 100% cotton knit.

“Most of my garments are made out of T-shirts and some bed sheets,” Bailey said.

On the other hand, Burkhardt drew inspiration from plastic straws and the recent controversy surrounding their use.

“I was very interested in the plastic straw issue, how people were saying you shouldn’t use plastic straws because they don’t biodegrade, so I wanted to make garments out of those,” Burkhardt said. “All of my garments are transparent, and I wanted to find a second purpose for a one-use item.”

Students who want to be involved with Art2Wear do not need to be art and design majors, but the majority of the designers are, Wiegmann said. However, many other students in different majors participate in the event through graphic design, photography, exhibition and fundraising.

In addition to student volunteers, invited guests, like Oami Powers and Aly Khalifa from Designbox, Erica Porter, a Raleigh event planner, and Pamela Jennings, a professor and head of the Department of Art + Design, have helped students coordinate the event throughout the year.

During a meeting with Art + Design students earlier in the semester, Jennings said that Art2Wear costs the College of Design about $35,000.

“This year, we are lucky because a corporation that came and saw it and loved it so much gave us money last year to cover the bill,” Jennings said in the meeting. “Now we have money from them this year, not to cover the whole thing but to cover most of it, a substantial amount.”

In addition, the Art2Wear fund provides a small amount of money for each designer to help cover the costs of their collection.

However, the rest is paid out of pocket by the designers, Powers said via email.

“This year, we got $200, but that does not cover a lot,” Bailey said. “We have to buy everything, like materials, fabric, thread and any fasteners, shoes, accessories. Everything is coming from us.”

Burkhardt said that she used the $200 from Art2Wear on shoes alone. She also said that some designers have spent over $1,000 of their own money on collections this year.

In order to see the designers’ collections, Wiegmann encourages students to attend the free dress rehearsal on Friday, April 26, at 3 p.m. in Talley Student Union.

“The dress rehearsal is free to any student with an NC State ID,” Wiegmann said. “Then there is another show at 7:30 p.m., which is paid. You can buy tickets online at ticket central or in person at the will call office before the show.”

Wiegmann said that Art2Wear is a unique opportunity for those in the College of Design to showcase the work they have been completing all year.

“Last year was the biggest show we had,” Wiegmann said. “We are just hoping we can grow every year.”

Massive D.H. Hill Library renovation anticipated to begin in May Sofia Gonzalez Berrtello Correspondent

Construction will commence this summer for a massive renovation to the current front entrance of D.H. Hill Library, which is scheduled for completion in fall 2020.

The renovations will affect the main entrance of the library that faces the Brickyard. Because of this, the main entrance to the building will be moved to the Hillsborough street entrance, which will open on Monday, May 13. Still, there will be a portion of the library that students cannot access.

Chris Johnson, facility planner at the university, talked about the construction that will be happening in the library.

“We’re going to cut a hole from the first f loor to the second f loor and from the second floor to the third floor to create a lobby near the entrance and we’re putting in a new grand staircase,” Johnson said.

“Because of this, we’re temporarily relocating Hill of Beans and are combining it with The Creamery.”

A big aspect of this project is to create more space for the Tutorial Center to expand its resources for students and to facilitate a new tutorial model which would include larger groups of students.

“It’s about student retention,” Johnson said. “The Academic Success, Tutoring,

approved, but now schools will not have to go to such measures to ensure that all students can vote.

The original voter ID law was passed December 2018 after the Senate overrode a veto from Gov. Roy Cooper. Federal courts repealed the voter ID law in 2016 after challenges from the NAACP. Steven Greene, professor of political science at NC State, said that while the college IDs are a good compromise, the law in general fixes a problem that does not exist.

“Voter fraud is rare, and it’s not actually solving the problem,” Greene said.

Greene said that one recent case of voter fraud was during the absentee ballot tampering in the district nine election, where members of Republican Party tampered

and Writing Center are all tied to student retention rates, so the more they can expose these tutorial services to the general population, the better.”

Charlie Marshall, associate director of construction, said that these new additions to the library will benefit students who typically do not go to Centennial Campus to utilize Hunt Library’s resources.

“We’re creating what’s called a Data and Technology Commons for the library,” Marshall said. “Part of the conversion of the bookstacks is to create more digital resources and opportunities similar to what they have at Hunt Library. At Hunt, you have visualization tools that you don’t have here.”

This project will make resources commonly attributed to Hunt Library accessible to students who frequent Main Campus, making this technology available for students of all disciplines.

“The students on Centennial Campus [are] mostly in textiles and engineering, so students now in CHASS or College of Education will have access to these spaces on their part of campus,” Johnson said.

Marshall said that because there will be heavy construction in the Brickyard, students will be affected and rerouted to avoid construction areas. According to Marshall, events such as the Earth Fair will not be able to function in the same location during construction. with absentee ballots to cast votes in their favor. As a result, this district will be having a new election. The new legislation did not address this issue of voter fraud, according to Greene.

Greene also said that eligible voters may not even have IDs and that the law will ultimately shrink voter turnout. It especially hurts out-of-state or international students.

However, Greene clarified that he does think that students being able to use their student ID and voter ID will be helpful since North Carolina law now requires it.

The voter ID requirement will not go into effect until after the 2020 elections.

“It’s clear that the revision takes into account what our current process is,” Mathis said. “I know that there is a strong interest on behalf of the other UNC schools to have their IDs approved as voter IDs as well … I imagine all those who weren’t approved will resubmit under this new law.”

“There will be flagmen to guide all the pedestrian traffic through the Brickyard to make sure everything goes smoothly,” said Marshall.

Certain locations outside the library will also be closed as well, such as the terrace outside of the Atrium.

“Because we’re fencing a portion of the Brickyard, we’re taking about a quarter of

the seating from the terrace and [relocating] it somewhere else in the Brickyard, so now students will be able to sit closer to the Brickyard,” Marshall said.

Multiple construction projects will be going on over the next few years in DH Hill Library, however this is anticipated to be the most drastic change to the library in the near future.

Letter from the Editor: Former editor-inchief unemployed, sad, thankful Jonathan Carter Former Editorin-Chief

Well, here we are. This letter marks the end of my career as an NC State student, a student journalist and, most importantly, as your editor-in-chief.

When I first wrote you in April 2017, I said that Technician was your journal to write in and that I would merely be your editor. After two full years in this position, which by the way is definitely the best student leadership position on campus, I can certainly say y’all wrote a hell of a journal.

In today’s climate, journalism is more important than ever. I know, you’ve probably heard that a hundred times from student and professional journalists alike. The thing is though, it’s true. Journalism, especially local and student journalism, is necessary to keep people in communities informed.

And in an age where local news organizations are dying off and student newspapers are losing funding, it is integral that we as a community continue to support public servant journalists who work every single day to produce content for us. So please, continue to read Technician, and buy a subscription to a local news organization. They need your support.

Since I started in January 2016, Technician has completely transformed from a printfirst publication to a web and social mediafirst news organization. This transition allows us to meet you, our readership, where you want to be met: online, on social media and in print once a week (if you still like to pick up a print copy). We have made strides over the past two years to make Technician as accessible to the readership as possible.

Your student newspaper is dedicated to serving you wherever you are, and if we’re not, let us know! Send in a letter to the new editor, Dan Gilliam.

Okay. I had to get through all of that stuff before I can start being sentimental.

No column I could write would have the ability to express my gratitude to the student body of this university (my readership) for reading our content the past few years and supporting accountable student journalism.

To the student body: thank you.

I’ve had the honor of serving as editor for two volumes of Technician with two incredible editorial staffs. These people clock in hundreds of hours a week to produce journalism and work so hard for the student body of NC State. My job would be completely useless if it weren’t for them and their hard work. To my editorial staff of volumes 98 and 99: thank you.

Of course, the largest and most important group of people at any news organization are the staff writers, correspondents, photographers, designers, videographers, copy editors

and everyone else on staff who are making the content day in and day out for us to edit and publish. These people are the backbone of Technician, and I owe an incredible debt of gratitude for all of the correspondents and staff members I have worked with over the past two years. To all of Technician’s correspondents and staff members: thank you.

Most of you reading this probably know me, have seen me or have heard of me in some way. I’ve talked with countless students, student orgs, staff and faculty over the past two years about Technician and how to better serve the NC State community.

Someone you may not be as familiar with, though, is my managing editor, Connor Bolinder. Connor, serving with you as the leaders of Technician has been the greatest honor I’ve ever had. Your dedication to our newspaper has meant the world to me, and everyone who has worked for us knows that without you, I wouldn’t be half the leader I was. Connor, thank you.

Last but certainly not least, I have to give my thanks to the 19 (I know, holy crap) news editors I have worked with at Technician since my freshman year. I started in news over three years ago as a correspondent and worked my way up to assistant news editor and then news editor. The news department at Technician is an incredible group of people, dedicated to the notion that the NC State University community deserves the best breaking news, investigative news, and safety information we can possibly

provide. The news editors I’ve hired over the past two years are second to none, and I wouldn’t trade my time working with them for anything in the world.

I was dragged to a Technician interest meeting my freshman year by my roommate, Isaac Tolbert. I had no intention of joining the school newspaper, but after coming into that interest meeting, I was hooked.

Thank you, Isaac, for making me come in that night.

I’m leaving Technician my senior year literally only because I have to. I have worked so hard at this news organization the past few years, and it is certainly a painful goodbye. I have been a member of Technician’s editorial staff every day for the last three full years. It will be a big change for me and a big change for Technician, but they’re ready.

I have full faith and confidence in our new editor, Dan. I think he loves Technician and the NC State community (almost) as much as I do. Trust him just like you trusted me.

Technician is almost 100 years old. As editor-in-chief, I was merely steering the ship.

My time as a caretaker of your student news organization is over, and this is goodbye, but only to me.

We are Dan and Rachael, Technician’s new editor-in-chief and managing editor, respectively. We are very excited for our new positions and ready to put our ideas into action over the course of the 100th volume.

In the past years, Technician has transitioned from being a primarily print publication to a web-first outlet. Part of our mission for this volume is to serve the university community by providing it with the journalism that it needs. To do this effectively, we need to better utilize the new creative outlets we have.

This next year, we will focus on im-

proving the publication’s accessibility and fostering a more expansive media outlet. We will create more opportunities for our readers to ingest information in ways that are representative of the 21st century. We want to integrate more graphics, videos and story-telling photos into the core of our publication to make Technician more interactive and captivating.

Next year is also Technician’s 100th volume. With this milestone, we have given ourselves the duty of looking back and analyzing the impact Technician has had on NC State throughout the years.

In the past century, Technician has published helpful and informative content, but it has also published content that is insensitive, sexist and racist. Technician is always working to better itself.

In order to continue to grow, we must acknowledge Technician’s history. We are overdue for such an analysis, and going through our 100th volume without taking lessons from our past would be inexcusable as servants to the community.

The commencement speech is the way that the graduating class gives its last goodbyes, gratitude and general appreciation for North Carolina State University.

The speaker for the spring 2019 graduating class is Ruhama Wolle, a fourth-year studying communication and management. The commencement speaker is chosen through a process of application and interviews from a council of faculty.

Wolle found the motivation to apply for commencement speaker after her experiences in other public speaking opportunities, like Wolfpack Speaks and TUFFTalks.

“Surprisingly, I won, and then, in that, I think it’s just speaking up for a community that I’m very involved in, which is like prison reforms,” Wolle said. “It really touched my heart, and then I kept hearing from a lot of people, following that competition, that I have speaking skills. From then on, I did TUFFTalks, and that one was really dissecting our self-journey. I sort of have a story, in terms of how I got to NC State and all that I’ve been through. I went up on stage, and I had a vulnerable moment and a rush of emotions, but I kind of got that affirmation.”

After her initial speeches, Wolle felt glad that she was able to share her story because she found that it helped other people.

“When I finished, people were coming up to me and saying, ‘Your story isn’t my story, but it really helped me to be able to be confident in my story,’” Wolle said. “I thought about it and said, ‘Why wouldn’t I do it on a larger scale?’ If it helps this many people in this small event, let me just audition for it and see how it goes.”

Wolle’s desire to help others and her general friendly nature is noted even by her adviser, Steven Tisdale, a graduate teaching assistant in the Department of Communication and instructor of records for COM 110 Public Speaking.

“The thing about Ruhama — we call her Ru — she is quietly determined,” Tisdale said. “When you meet her, she doesn’t appear to be as ambitious and as self-directed as you would think she is. She always comes off as being very humble, very

friendly, but the way that I would probably describe her is that she is, again, quietly determined; that she is always absorbing information; that she is always seeking a way to improve herself.”

Wolle transferred to NC State from UCLA two years ago, wanting to find a better fit for her education. She found what she was looking for at NC State.

“This is my second shot at school, because I transferred in,” Wolle said. “I think State has kind of rebuilt my confidence, and it really helped me hone in on who I am and what I want to do.”

Wolle’s drive was also of note by Tisdale.

Being her advisor, he was able to see her growth and change over the years that she has been at NC State.

“We meet every few months, have coffee, talk about what she’s doing, what her professional goals are,” Tisdale said. “Every time I meet her, she’s just like Legos. Seriously, she’s just building as she goes along.

And it’s like OK, well this was a block, now it’s a building. This was a building, now it’s a city block, and that’s just the way she is.”

Wolle says that much of her success can be attributed to her best friend.

“She’s just been there every step of the way,” Wolle said. “She kept saying, ‘I had no doubt you were going to win this. I had no doubt you were going to win that.’ But even moments when I questioned myself, she was definitely that person who was

High-Powered Rocketry Club launches student careers Marissa Jerden Contributor

High-Powered Rocketry Club is a group that gives undergraduate students the chance to build industry-standard rockets and practice real-world aerospace engineering. Every year, the group competes against other teams in the Student Launch event, which is sponsored by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center.

John Inness, a fifth-year studying aerospace engineering, is the coordination lead for the team. He spoke about the launch that the team participates in each year and discussed this year’s challenge of creating an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV).

“We compete in the NASA Student Launch, which is a yearly eight-month-long competition ... to emulate the NASA process of some sort of future NASA mission,” Inness said. “For example, this year’s design goal was to make a UAV that would fit inside the rocket and then deploy upon landing, which is similar to the real life Mars 2020 mission.”

While the competition is fun and rewarding, it can also pose many challenges to the team.

Throughout the competition, the teams will write reports that describe the process of creating a rocket. Putting the rocket together can take three weeks of constant work.

Ashby Scruggs, a fourth-year studying aerospace engineering, is the treasurer of the club.

She explained some of the challenges posed by the competition.

“NASA will give us a set of requirements that we have to fulfill in the form of a high-powered rocket,” Scruggs said. “Usually it comes with an altitude requirement. We’ll have to make the rocket go a certain height and then we also design a payload that goes into the rocket. This year that was a deployable UAV that was expelled from the rocket.”

The main aspect about the team’s rocket that changes each year is the payload. A payload is what an aircraft carries and is the ultimate goal of the project, like launching a satellite. A UAV is a small drone that can fly on its own or be controlled remotely. These are often the payloads in such projects.

ployable UAV that would come out of the rocket upon landing and fly away to a different location to drop off a navigational beacon,” Scruggs said.

The High-Powered Rocketry Club can also function as a Senior Design Project. The team is composed of underclassmen who serve as officers as well as five to seven seniors who serve as design leads. The design leads each take on an important design aspect of the rocket, such as structural analysis, throughout the year.

Additionally, the club provides real-world engineering experience for its members. Scruggs highly recommends that engineering students join a design club to gain experience outside of the classroom. During the Student Launch, teams are held to the same standards as professional NASA contractors.

“So what we’re doing in this competition is really gearing young engineers for NASA projects in the future,” Scruggs said, “It’s giving us that experience that will prepare us for both industry and government work.”

Inness added that he believed working with the club helped him get an internship with NASA. “For most of your classes, it’s mostly theoretical knowledge with projects thrown in,” Inness said. “Versus in rocketry club, we do an entire project all the way from the conceptual phase to flying it and actually testing it. It provides how stuff works with the theory from your classes

and it gives you a chance to apply them.”

The club also does outreach in the community. This year, they have taught 5,000 kindergarten through twelfth-grade students about rockets. The group aims to inspire the next generation of STEM majors.

“The most fun thing is ... outreach events where we go to local schools and tell children about rockets,” Inness said. “[We meet] elementary school children and help them make their own water bottle rockets and launch those.”

The club recently returned from this year’s Student Launch. They took first place in the altitude category. Their rocket surpassed the second-place team’s altitude by three times, according to Scruggs. The group works hard to achieve their goals, and they forge great friendships in the process.

“I really love working with people and this is a club where you’re required to do that,” Scruggs said. “Nobody can execute the goals of the club on their own ... At the beginning of the year, you really have to take an idea and run with it and then you develop that idea more and more and more throughout the course of the year and eventually it becomes something. You don’t really get to see the whole process in any other situation. You don’t see a project from start to end, and that’s what’s really rewarding about the club.”

many troubles throughout her academic career, but has never given up on her road to success. With such an amiable and inspirational nature, she enjoys telling her story since it has helped those who have heard it.

“She is very inspiring, and I think she has that effect on other people,” Tisdale

said. “She’s very calm, she’s not boisterous or in your face. She’s quietly determined, and people pick up on that … She didn’t put them off with any kind of excessive personality traits. She’s a very accessible person. I’m very happy for her, it’s wonderful.”

‘The right job at the right time’: Yow leaves legacy of success, culture change at NC State Andrew Schnittker Contributor

The old saying goes that you should leave something better than you found it. For NC State Director of Athletics Debbie Yow, who will retire from her post next week after nine years, that goal has definitely been accomplished.

The Wolfpack’s various programs have made tremendous strides on and off the field since Yow was hired in 2010. When she came in, NC State was No. 89 in the Learfield Director’s Cup Standings, which measures the collective success of a school’s athletic programs. In the most recent update, NC State was No. 14.

“I just have such a sense of belonging from day one and of real obligation to do everything as a leader in athletics that I could do,” Yow said. “That’s part of changing the culture. You can’t have two sports be very, very successful and 21 doing horribly and think that you’re going to have anything other than a dysfunctional environment. That’s not the culture I wanted to create. I wanted us to celebrate every success, however small.”

For Yow, coming to NC State wasn’t just about taking on a new challenge and a new job; it was about coming home. Originally from Gibsonville, just an hour outside Raleigh, Yow came into an NC State program that was as familiar as could be to her and her family.

Her sister Kay Yow had a historic 34-year career as the Wolfpack’s women’s basketball coach, and her name adorns the court in Reynolds Coliseum to this day. Kay Yow’s legacy runs through NC State, as the Kay Yow Cancer Fund and Play4Kay Game are constant reminders to the NC State community of the remarkable impact of Kay Yow, who passed away after a battle with cancer in 2009. For Debbie Yow, coming to NC State was coming back to her roots.

“This job opened and it was home,” Yow said. “The headhunter called and seemed mildly surprised that I would be interested. I explained to him, ‘This is not just profession-

al; it’s personal to me. My family has deep roots at that school.’ I said I’ve always wondered from afar why across the board they couldn’t do better, because I remembered the ‘70s and the ‘80s, early ‘80s, when we were really pretty special. I was old enough that I could remember all that, and so it was different from any other call I’d gotten from the headhunters.”

The timing was right for Yow, too. With former Maryland President C.D. Mote Jr. retiring, she was open to a change after 16 years leading the Terrapins as the ACC’s first female athletics director.

When former NC State AD Lee Fowler stepped down in 2010 and the university approached Yow, she knew where she wanted to be. She knew taking over at NC State in what was likely to be her last AD job would bring a unique challenge, but it was one she was ready to meet.

“So I met Dr. Woodson, and after I met him, I knew: I want to come home,” Yow said. “NC State wants me. I was toward the end of my career in a sense. I wouldn’t recommend it for everybody. You better have one heck of an energy level to bite this off at that juncture in a person’s career. But I do have that energy level and still do. So it was a real blessing; it was the right job at the right time, at least from my perspective.”

So Yow came in and got straight to work on improving NC State’s teams across the board. She replaced the couch and TV in her office with a whiteboard and round table on day one in order to start problem solving.

She looked at the heads of every major part of athletics, from compliance to finance to sports supervisors, and saw what changes needed to be made and where.

“You start looking at results,” Yow said.

“It’s not complex, in my mind, but you have to stick with it. So that kind of the approach is, ‘Where are we and how do we think about ourselves? What do we think about ourselves? Are we thinking we should be winning?’ The sports turned out to be underfunded in a material way. That was part of why we couldn’t win. We didn’t have the basics of what we need in place, whether they were the right coaches in some cases.

In some cases, we had the right coaches but we didn’t have any critical mass of resources that would even allow us to try to do something better. So you just plow in.”

And plow in is what Yow did. Along with boosting play on the field across the board, Yow invested time and resources into im-

proving NC State Athletics from a facilities standpoint as well. There’s a lot that has been accomplished over Yow’s tenure, but she has two crowning achievements that stand out above the rest: the renovation of Reynolds Coliseum and the building of the Close-King Indoor Practice Facility for football.

The renovations changed Reynolds Coliseum, a 66-year-old building that was falling apart, into a beautiful facility that hosts some of NC State’s most successful sports and a building that Yow says she still gets more compliments on than anything else. Yow remembers going to an outdoor practice in the freezing rain, and knowing something needed to be done.

“One of my favorite projects is the indoor practice facility,” Yow said. “I told the two men who gave the naming rights money for that, the leadership gifts, that if I could hug a building, I would hug that building … I remember thinking, ‘This is a need. This is not a want. This has to happen somehow. We

can’t keep asking them to do this [practice in bad weather].’ And then those two donors came forward. That’s why I feel so strongly about the building. It changed our lives as a football program to have that building.”

Another part of Yow’s tenure at NC State that has stood out has been her willingness and desire to engage with an incredibly passionate fan base, one that will let its voice be heard if things aren’t going so smoothly.

From her engaging wittiness on Twitter under the username “#1 state fan” and handle @ gopacknow to her genuine interest in meeting and talking to fans at events, being open and respectful of her fan base is something that Yow hasn’t taken lightly in her time as AD. “I think anytime we drop a contest that by rankings we were supposed to win, it’s bad because they’re passionate,” Yow said.

There are many responsibilities that face an athletics director when they take over at a new school. One of the most important is making sure the right coaches are in place. As NC State Director of Athletics Debbie Yow prepares to wrap up her tenure in the coming weeks, hiring the right coaches is one of the biggest pieces of her legacy.

All but three of the Wolfpack’s current coaches were hired by Yow, and all either have their programs in strong positions or on the rise.

“I’m thrilled that they’re here,” Yow said.

“The coaches across the board are pretty extraordinary, including the ones I inherited.

Track and field is still the same, Rollie [Geiger] is still here. Elliott [Avent] is still here with baseball. Most of them have changed.”

The hire closest to home is women’s basketball coach Wes Moore, who completed his sixth season as head coach this winter. Moore served as an assistant coach from 1993-95 under Kay Yow, Debbie Yow’s sister, who died after a battle with cancer in 2009. Since coming back to NC State, Moore has been nothing but successful. He’s coming off back-to-back trips to the Sweet 16 and had the program ranked as high as No. 7 in the country this season.

“It was a great honor,” Moore said. “Of course, I was with Kay Yow in the mid-‘90s as an assistant. It meant a lot to me to have an opportunity to come where coach Yow was such a legend and such a great ambassador, not only for women’s basketball but for NC State and even the state of North Carolina. To step on that court and see coach Yow’s name on it, and to know that some great coaches have been on that sideline like coach Valvano and coach Sloan, it’s a great honor to be able to step into that position for sure.”

Moore is just one of the many noteworthy hires in recent years. Debbie Yow also hired head football coach Dave Doeren.

Since taking over as the Wolfpack’s head

coach in 2013, Doeren has elevated NC State football. The Pack has gone to five straight bowl games, won nine games in back-to-back seasons and is second to Clemson in ACC wins the past two seasons.

“I wanted to work somewhere where the chancellor, the athletic director and the head football coach would have a straight line of communication and similar goals and dreams about what the program could do and their commitment to the program,” Doeren said.

“In talking to Debbie, you could tell that this was home to her as well, and it was personal. It wasn’t just a job. It was something that meant more than just being the athletic director.”

That’s not to say every hire has gone perfectly. Yow has hired two men’s basketball coaches in her time at NC State. The first, Mark Gottfried, started in 2011 and took the Pack to the NCAA Tournament in his first four seasons.

Things went south quickly from there, however; and the Pack had back-to-back terrible seasons to close out Gottfried’s tenure. Yow moved quickly to uphold NC State’s standards and dismissed Gottfried following the 2016-17 season, but his replacement has been a great fit already.

Yow brought in Kevin Keatts from UNCWilmington the day after the Seahawks’ 2017 season ended. In his first season, Keatts took the Wolfpack back to the NCAA Tournament.

In his two years working under Yow, Keatts built a strong relationship with the Wolfpack’s outgoing athletics director.

“We have a very good relationship, because she comes as an athletic director with a way different perspective,” Keatts said. “Her being a head coach at the highest level, her understanding coaching, her understanding players, her willingness to be involved with the program, just to be around the program; I’ve learned so much from her and am excited that she gave me the opportunity to be the head coach here.”

Yow has hit home runs with a number of her nonrevenue hires as well. Pat Popolizio has built wrestling into a consistent top-10 program; ditto for Braden Holloway with swimming. George Kiefer of men’s soccer and Tim Santoro of women’s soccer have both those teams competing for the NCAA Tournament every year.

Coming off a much-needed midweek win against Tennessee Tech, the NC State baseball team will travel to South Bend, Indiana, to take on Notre Dame in a three-game set this weekend.

The Wolfpack (32-10, 13-8 ACC) will look to get back on track after dropping seven of its last 10 games, including two straight ACC series losses, while the Fighting Irish (17-22, 10-11 ACC) are seeking their second straight ACC series win after taking two of three from Pitt

last weekend.

Notre Dame ranks at 131 in RPI, second worst in the ACC to Pitt, due to its weak offense and a pitching staff with a propensity for surrendering runs. The Pack’s opponent this weekend certainly has its weaknesses, but the Fighting Irish still have 10 ACC wins and impressive series victories on the road at Clemson and Wake Forest.

Offense has been hard to come by for the Irish this season. Notre Dame has hit just 23 home runs (NC State has 55) while accumulating an OPS of just .697.

Despite the dearth of offensive production, Niko Kavadas has been a star for Notre Dame this season. The third baseman has nearly half of his team’s home runs with 10 and owns a robust .277/.368/.542 slash line. He leads the Irish in RBIs and total bases and is one of just two players on the squad with a slugging percentage above .400.

Kavadas has logged an unsightly .929 fielding percentage playing at the hot corner, but his bat is why he’s in the lineup, something the Wolfpack will need to be

The Irish’s pitching staff has been equally as poor as the team’s bats, giving up double-digit runs in 11 of the team’s 39 games on its way to a poor 5.39 ERA. The Irish have three clear-cut starters in Tommy Sheehan, Cameron Junker and Cameron Brown.

Junker has been a victim of the long ball, giving up 11 this season, while Brown has been burned by free passes, walking 28 in 55.1 innings. Notre Dame has a couple of reliable relievers in Shane Combs and Tommy Vail, but the rest of the relief corps has been subpar.

The Wolfpack pitching staff has held its opponents to under five runs just once in the past nine games, a stark contrast from the first half of the season. Coming in and facing a below-average Notre Dame offense will give the rotation and bullpen a chance to get back to its earlyseason success.

This is a series the Pack should win and is important to its postseason positioning.

With its last two series coming against UNC-Chapel Hill and Clemson, a sweep or even a series win should keep the Pack in the hosting conversation for regionals.

The first game will take place Friday at 6 p.m. at Frank Eck Stadium. Saturday and Sunday’s games are at 2 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively. All games will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.

They can’t decide what ticket prices are, what our schedules are like. It’s just a matter of respect to share information with them when I can. I can’t always, but when I can, I want to.”

While football and men’s basketball are going to get the “lion’s share” of resources and attention at most schools, and NC State is no different, Yow wanted to make sure every sport was successful, and she has achieved that goal.

Women’s cross country continues to dominate the ACC under Laurie Henes. Gymnastics has been to NCAA regionals two years in a row behind Kim Landrus. The women’s tennis team set a new program record this year with a No. 9 national ranking with Simon Earnshaw at the helm. The list of impressive hires by Yow stretches across the board, and everyone she hires knows they are set up to succeed.

“She means business,” Holloway said. “My interview process with her, I was fairly intimidated. I didn’t know her and I heard she was straight and direct and to the point. I kind of left there nervous of her intensity level, but also that I fit right in ... I left there thinking that she’s not just making a change in swimming and diving, but she’s making a change all over the place and it could be a pretty cool situation to be in.”

One coach at NC State who knows Yow well is Kyle Spencer of men’s tennis. He has been hired by Yow at two different schools, spending his first season at Maryland while she was in her last.

She’s got a few options for what comes next: traveling, consulting, maybe writing or teaching. Fans can still expect to see the familiar @gopacknow handle pop up on their Twitter feeds, though perhaps not quite as frequently as before.

Yow’s not quite sure exactly what the next chapter will bring, and she’s OK with that.

What is certain is that her legacy at NC State as a builder and leader is secure. If Yow’s ultimate goal was to leave NC State Athletics better than she found it, she’s done that and then some.

He took over NC State’s men’s tennis program in 2017 and has gained an appreciation for Yow’s leadership in both places.

“She does give you the reins and let you do what you need to do,” Spencer said. “At the same time, you do feel through your individual meetings with her that she’s up on everything that’s going on, and you really feel like she has your back.”

One of Spencer’s fondest memories of Yow came when he was still at Maryland and she at NC State. In his second year coaching the Terrapins, Spencer took his team to the NCAA Tournament and won a first-round match against Michigan.

After the victory, Yow both sent Spencer a letter and called to congratulate him.

“That just said everything I needed to know about her that she still valued what we were doing and it was still part of her family,” Spencer said.

As Yow prepares to retire from her post, she leaves NC State Athletics and incoming Athletics Director Boo Corrigan in a great spot.

The foundation for continued success is in place, through the coaches Yow’s hired and the winning culture she’s fostered.

“A legacy more of people thinking bigger when they get here as coaches,” Holloway said. “Thinking bigger than what NC State’s done before. I think she created a standard of not being OK with just being mediocre. I

Her legacy is she came in and challenged us, challenged us, to want more and to think bigger. I think that’s the biggest legacy that she leaves behind.”

“I just have such a sense of belonging from day one and of real obligation to do everything as a leader in athletics that I could do.”
