With a team of over 15 artists, gypsies and creative thinkers behind it, Natural Curiosities houses a collection of over 60,000 images, textiles, textures, grasses, plants, presses, pigments and anything else that provides a natural creative energy. With this repertoire of images and objects, we have the freedom to create without boundaries, reacting constantly to the shifts and changes of the seasons. Christopher has now placed NC at the forefront of providing beautiful, large, impactful handmade art pieces to stores, designers, hotels, collectors and museums around the world. He currently runs production out of two creative studios in Los Angeles.

classic paule marrot collection Natural Curiosities acquired the beautiful textile archives of French engraver, painter, and textile artist Paule Marrot (1902 – 1987). Early in her career, Marrot shifted her emphasis from painting to textiles to create expressive patterns from the 1920s through the 1950s. Marrot’s bold use of color and patterns reflect a compositionally modernist style classically associated with the Art Deco movement. Her artistic influences include the expressive writings of Marcel Proust, as evident in her work Du coté de chez Swann, based on Proust’s book In Search of Lost Time. These pieces are aged, deckled, and floated on linen.

Since Victorian times, collecting bottles has been a fascinating way to record history. During an excavation dig in Copper River, Alaska, a bottle specialist for Natural Curiosities dug over 60 bottles that were 200 – 300 years old. Christopher then reproduced the bottles into a series of images to immortalize the unique nature of all these artifacts.

cannabis seeds Cannabis is a plant that provides much conversation and one that is respected in our world for being a catalyst for creativity. The history of the plant is fascinating and it is one of the most controversial plants on the planet. A voracious grower, it is known world-wide, medicinally, for being a relaxant and a pain reliever. For this reason we believe this plant should be celebrated and revered. These images where discovered in 1954 as part of a herbarium from Sweden.

This whimsical collection is comprised of 2 Natural Curiosities classics — the Wishing Tree, and the Primativo Fortune Tree. These images date back to mid-late 18th century and were taken from explorers’ journals and early garden sketches.

lord lytton | gallicus book of secrets | parisian florals Lord Lytton Hand-Drawn Horse The art of writing has been lost with the introduction of technology, yet it is an art that has made empires, broken hearts, and forged contracts. This collection reveals an unusual art form that has been lost over the last 250 years. In 1780, a trend started in Europe of creating ornate images with an ink pen whereby the ink would land on the page and not lift off the page until the creation had been completed. It is an example of creative writing as an exquisite art form, and Natural Curiosities hopes to revive appreciation for this lost art.

Seahorses as a subject and image have always been very difficult to find. This pair was discovered in a collection that was bought in auction in Europe showing a series of ceramic designs originally intended for the Formaintraux factory in France.

The octopus is everything for Natural Curiosities. It represents everything “curious” about what we do as a company. We have introduced a number of octopus images over the last few years, and Lord Bodner’s triptych is the newest addition to our continued fascination of the octopus. The detail of the image is the finest that we have found. The original is a copperplate engraving by Lord Bodner and was published in 1826 in London as part of a series studying creatures of the deep.

Peter dunham moved to Los Angeles in 1998 and started his own interior design company. Currently he has residential projects in Los Angeles, Aspen, San Francisco, Laguna, Ojai, and Montecito. jacques barraband parrots Jacques Barraband was the most famous ornithological engraver during France’s period of enlightenment. He worked for the king, and his work is in the top 3 of all bird illustrations known today. These images was taken from an original published in 1809.

Banzanini was an engraver from the 1830s. Although his work covered a wide ornithological survey, the study of owls was his main interest. These exceptional pair of owls have been printed extra large to show the fine detail of the engravings.

papilio collection This year, we introduced a theme called “Modern Apothecary,” inspired by the art of collecting. We are in constant amazement at the beauty of butterflies. The number of species that exist in the world and the varying numbers and sizes provide a lifetime of learning about these carriers of beauty and gentle flight. The species names are carefully hand-typed so that we can all begin to appreciate the different butterflies of the world.

the maria merian butterfly collection Maria Sibylla Merian left Amsterdam in 1703 for Suriname in search of understanding the entomological world. She spent over two years in Suriname studying these insects and put together a collection of 72 plates of butterflies in their habitats, as well as illustrating the process of metamorphosis.

the chinery horse In response to an ongoing interest in equestrian images, Christopher introduces a new look with these panels of a racehorse’s head. The horse’s name is Ravi, and he belongs to Colonel Russell, as depicted in a personal photo album and diary of the colonel’s life in India in the early 1900s.

the denver horse The Denver Horse Triptych The Royal Ascot is the world’s most famous horse-race meeting, which began back in 1711. It is, and has always been, a major event in the British social calendar. This collection comes from a beautiful old photograph depicting Lord Denver’s prize horse, Aditoc. The photograph was taken after the winning race in 1928. This piece is aged, deckled, and floated on linen.

christopher felver photography collection Even a partial list of photographer/filmmaker Christopher Felver’s subjects reads like a roster of America’s mid-century avant garde. The collection presented here is new work — photographs of structural elements transformed through his critical eye into lyrical mosaics. There is a mysterious nature to these images, and when juxtaposed into a grid system, the division of space and contrasting tonal values result in a new language, functioning almost as an ancient alphabet — agents of a short story. The fascination Christopher finds in the details of otherwise ordinary objects makes us question “What is beauty?” He has managed to marshal in, through time, place and condition, a unique and energetic series of poetic symmetry. His work is collected in libraries and museums worldwide.
