“DESIGN IS A JOURNEY OF (SELF) DISCOVERY”.
W
elcome to our annual Design Issue. This is the time where we explore all things Design. From Nursery design, to Fashion trends, to the most decadent bathtubs, to the ultimate Sound experience, Design is a sensorial experience that engages more than just the sight. Design as an expression of oneself, one’s thoughts, one’s dreams is the main topic of this issue. Can we be happy by design? This is what Alyson Stamos questions in her Pursuit of Happiness article. And a closer look at our dairy industry brings us to question whether those cows staring at us from the milk carton are really as happy as they say. My interview with Sara Fancy of the Silver Horse Ranch, deeply resonated with me. The Family Constellation workshop she does with her horses is nothing short of extraordinary, and if you are looking for an opportunity to connect or re-connect with yourself and finally demystify some of the baggage you have been carrying on your shoulder, you will definitely enjoy our Connection feature on the flip side of this book. I am proud to say that we are about to launch our fourth annual 2015 NCW Eco-Excellence Awards™, ever so popular, ever so growing. These Awards™ are the only one of their kind to recognize excellence in the children, adult and pet lifestyle industries that stand out for their social and environmental sustainability. Last year, over 500 products were reviewed, 1 Million + unique visitors, and over 364,000 fans voted! This year we are adding a celebrity judge panel and we are honored to have, among others, Extra correspondent Terri Seymour as one of our judges, but also as our celebrity guest talking about managing motherhood and a demanding career in the spotlight. Last but not least, if you are planning a spring gateway, check out our ideal vacation in Paris, whether you are looking for a romantic escapade, a memorable family trip, or just that bucket list trip, we have got you covered. Bon voyage!

Agatha Kulaga Agatha Kulaga grew up in Connecticut, where she was probably the only kid on her block eating traditional Polish dishes, like tripe soup, liverwurst and butter sandwiches with blood sausage. Some of her happiest childhood memories are of baking alongside her mother and grandmother, making old-world sweets like apple cake, poppy-seed rolled cake and fat dessert dumplings. Agatha spent over a decade working in restaurants before pursuing a career in psychology, but never stopped scheming about food: she experimented with novel flavor combinations, started a supper club and acted as her friends’ personal pastry chef. She is grateful every day for the opportunity to grow Ovenly, which is rooted in her childhood love of Eastern European treats. www.oven.ly

LIFE, FAMILY AND OUR PURSUIT OF
HAPPINESS by Alison Stamos photos by Patrizia Montanari
A
lexis Drees has been teaching and caring for preschoolers for more than 15 years. With her education and training, she knows if a toddler is complaining on one particular day more than others, there is a reaso- nable explanation. Maybe he didn’t get enough sleep or it was just an off-day. When she had her son Dash, however, she noticed on days or weeks when he whined more than usual, she automatically interpreted that to mean “he’s unhappy” and that she was doing something wrong. She found it difficult to take a step back from the situation because just the sound of his whining brought her unhappiness. As a parent, she says, “I think you give yourself so much blame for the everyday.” Happy. An innocent, but oftentimes, loaded word. For some, it’s a conscious, active lifestyle that might involve meditation or silent retreats. There are others who don’t think much about it and yet consider themselves very happy. If we struggle with this state of being for ourselves, how then, do we define it for our children? Maybe they like their new teacher, but they didn’t make the soccer team. Should more days with laughter than whining be considered a success? With children, things change so quickly. Can we really ever make them happy? THE REALITY Madeline Levine, psychologist and author of Teach Your Children Well: Parenting for Authentic Success says mothers often tell her, “I can’t stand to see my child unhappy.” This is something she never heard 25 years ago when she first started her practice. Levine attributes this shift to families who live far from other relatives, women who either left well paying jobs to stay at home or mothers who are still working, trying to manage it all. Life is so busy and the traditional support systems are virtually non-existent. “We end up a little bit more like CEOs. We’re always checking each test, each grade, kind of like a CEO is checking the bottom line...how did you
3 4 NCWMAGAZINE.COM
do this quarter as opposed to really keeping their eye on the ball 20 years from now.” A fixation on happiness and material success results in children being deprived of some unhappiness and mistakes necessary for healthy development. Your child calls from school because they forgot their home work. Levine says you shouldn’t bring it to them. She calls this a “successful failure” because your child isn’t running into the street or shooting heroine. They will survive getting a zero in class and they have now learned not only how they calm themselves down when they are upset, but also how to deal with something like this in the future. “I can say with as much clinical certainty that the kid who doesn’t know how to cope, how to self-soothe, how to self-control, cannot be happy.” As parents, it is so tempting to answer the math problem or solve the social quandary, but it is when a child’s chance for success is just 50 percent, Levine says, they really thrive. HAPPIER, NOT HAPPY Between work and busy schedules, Jennifer O’Mahony’s family doesn’t get to eat much together during the week. She instituted official “family dinners” on the weekend with her husband and 8-year-old son Tiernan. They set the table more formally than usual and each person takes turns choosing the menu. Jennifer says her son feels he is on equal footing as his parents. “It makes him appreciate food and beyond that it is just immensely special, and it makes him feel empowered as well, which is interesting for kids. I think that makes them happy...to have choices and decisions that they can drive.” Small investments yielding high returns in our ordinary lives is how Gretchen Rubin lives. In her two New York Times bestsellers, The Happiness Project and Happier at Home, she chronicles the changes she makes in her day-to-day life.

“I’m always just thinking, are you as happy as you can be, or could you be happier under these circumstances”
She says we shouldn’t fixate on happy as a goal. It’s too finite for human experience. “I’m always just thinking, are you as happy as you can be, or could you be happier under these circumstances.” Rather than fixating on what we can do for our children, Rubin encourages parents to focus on themselves. She talks a lot about outer order leading to inner calm. If you feel your house is messy, clean it up. You’ll be able to find the baseball glove more easily and you won’t be overwhelmed by so much stuff. It’s for yourself, but it will have a positive effect on your children too. THE ROLE OF GENETICS AND GRATITUDE Scientists believe 50 percent of our happiness is genetic, 10 percent is circumstantial (family, health, geography), and the remaining 40 percent is intentional - that’s the part we can do something about. Jeffrey Froh, Assistant Professor of Psychology at Hofstra University, says parents can help their children work on being grateful, which is a critical ingredient to happiness. “Gratitude can really help,” Froh says, “buffer envy, narcissism, entitlement, and materialism.” 3 6 NCWMAGAZINE.COM
People who are truly grateful are able to process information differently and think about the benefits received from a kind act. Froh says there are three basic stages of understanding - intent (what was the benefactor’s reason), cost (what the benefactor might have given up to perform the act), and benefit (what you gained from the act). When Froh’s niece Olivia came over to help his 5-year-old James with his homework, Froh walked his son through the three phases. He reminded James that Olivia wanted to help him (intent), how much better he understands his homework (benefit), and cost (Olivia may have missed something else to help James). Froh says we can all do this exercise with our children James Froh once told his father he was “the luckiest kid in the world” after a day that included two trips to the nearby beach, a playdate, and a meal at a fast food restaurant. Not every day is perfect, not everyday ends with a smiley face icon, but sometimes, it’s worth remembering that the little things might be all we need.

TERRI SEYMOUR TV Correspondent for Extra, activist and mom-to-be
In a sunny January afternoon we got together with Extra’s Terri Seymour, to discuss pregnancy over forty, Golden Globes and dating a younger man. NCW: Congratulations on your pregnancy. I heard it’s a baby girl. How did you manage to maintain your healthy regime throughout this pregnancy? TS: I have been having really bad morning sickness so eating has been a struggle, chicken and light meals are about the only things I can keep down these days. I have been eating so much chicken and broccoli lately that I don’t want to see it for a while after this baby is born. I am desperate to have sushi again. I have also continued to exercise (if I weren’t feeling nauseous), Pilates mostly and now that I am bigger, more walks.
I ended up wearing a black dress by Yosep Sinudarsono. It’s a delicate balance between stylish and chic yet comfortable. Comfortable was really important to me, especially having to be on my feet so many hours. NCW: Who were some of your favorites this year? TS: Loved Boyhood and American Sniper, also Michael Keaton and Eddie Redmayne
NCW: Morning sickness aside, how have you been able to juggle pregnancy and work? TS: I have done my best, I have cut down to 4 times per week. I just did the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards will be my last assignment.
NCW: How is Clark (your boyfriend) getting ready for fatherhood? TS: He is very excited. He was ready. Despite being much younger than me. I was very clear from the beginning, I told him I wanted to have a baby and if this was not something he wanted, this relationship wouldn’t have worked out. He said he was in. It’s funny because my mom decided to have a talk with him, just to make sure that he was “really” in. And after they talked she told me: ‘He is ready’. Now they are really close, and when she comes to visit she won’t go anywhere without him.
NCW: Talking about Golden Globes, what were you wearing and how did you choose the dress considering that you had to make room for two? TS: It’s funny, I had a dress picked out and when I went to wear it, it didn’t fit anymore.
NCW: What will be one of the sweetest memory of this pregnancy ? TS: When we lay in bed at night, Clark sings to my belly: Do you want to build a snowmen? from Frozen. She is not even born but she will know all the words when she comes out.
6 8 NCWMAGAZINE.COM
NCW: How has your difference in age been perceived by your families and friends and how has impacted the relationship? TS: Everybody loves Clark and when they see us together they can’t help but being happy for us. Unfortunately his mom passed away last year so she won’t be able to see the baby, but she was also very happy for us. NCW: Going back to your pregnancy, where did you get advice and resources about things to buy before your baby arrival? TS: My friends are my go-to resource. There is so much a baby needs and I had no idea. My favorite stores are Bon Point and Bel Bambini in Beverly Hills, the Pump Station in Santa Monica, and Restoration Hardware. NCW: You and Simon Cowell are still very good friends (after having dated for six years). How has he taken the baby news? TS: He is very happy for us. Actually he sent me an email saying: “Obviously I want to be the godfather”.

Lead Lips
Sink Ships! by Lisa Reuer “Lead in Lipsticks” hits the headlines again! This issue has been popping up in studies since the 90’s, with a major “hit in ’07 when the FDA dubiously recognized 20 lipsticks for their high lead levels. Well, once again, this ugly “hidden” truth crops up as the FDA released its analytical results on the amount of lead (a known neurotoxin) found in up to 400 mainstream lipsticks. The biggest offen- der is L’Oreal. They make five of the top 10, including #1 and #2. The list continues with Maybelline, NARS (Shiseido), Cover Girl (P&G), Stargazer. Incredulously, the FDA says they do not believe this poses a safety concern, and will decide if an “upper limit” recommendation is needed after evaluating the allowable levels of lead in lipsticks. The EWG/Skin Deep, not satisfied with the FDA talking points, conducted their own study back in 2007. They tested 33 red lipsticks and found twothirds of them contained more lead than the amount allowed in candy. Bottom line - the FDA is maintaining that the levels found are safe, and that there is no concern. After all, the average content of lead in lipstick (1.11 ppm from a range found between 0.026 to 7.19 ppm) was an exposure rate 1,000 times less than that found in the normal daily consumption of water that was tested to meet EPA standards. Of course, no one is claiming companies are adding lead to lipsticks (or any other cosmetics) intentionally. Lead is a substance that naturally occurs in nature, just like Arsenic, Cadmium, Bismuth Oxychloride and other fun heavy metals. But sometimes things get a little too “heavy” when there is a need for a desired effect. So, this can be the price you pay for getting that 24-hour, never fade FD&C red dye lipstick; or the water-proof, wrap-to-the-back-of-your-head glamour lash look mascara, or the spray-on paint foundation that can also double as wall patch. I guess the point is to stay informed, read your labels, and if the color lasts for days (and glows in the dark!), you have to ask yourself…why? And you have to ask yourself is it worth it? Is it worth the accumulated body burden? Or is it a better choice to give your body a break, and go a little softer (and far less toxic) with some of the more natural mineral make-ups now so readily available from so many reputable sources? So, it really is all about choices. And on those (hopefully rare!) days when you feel that it is necessary to choose heavy metal hurricane-proof make-up that last for days, then just make sure that you don’t wear it on the same days that you plan on drinking tap water or eating candy…because your head just might explode! Who’s Your Daddy
I AM A GOOD
F AT H E R
by Ryan Green Photo by Ryan Green
I wear this statement of insistence as a badge of honor, proudly adorning my crinkled button-up shirt. My laptop computer perched atop the adjustable rolling table, precariously set among the previous evening’s clutter of paper cups, juice boxes and half-cans of soda that have been procured under the assumption that I was just raiding the patient fridge for him. Not that the combination of orange juice and lemon-lime soda, with a few creamers and artificial sweetener stirred with bendy straw was actually a delicacy I enjoyed for myself behind the closed door and dim lighting of our spacious hospital room, in the west wing, on the seventh floor - Oncology. The hollow sound of cable news leaks over my left shoulder as I sit in the overstuffed vinyl covered recliner that has become a home of sorts, for me, and for my son Joel, who is folded into my side - content and asleep. I am a good father. I move to reposition the computer so that I can type, but the machine protests; the line is occluded; the one that tethers Joel to the Mothership through the small plastic tubing that will feed Joel saline and medicine, and neon poison to kill the beast that lives inside of his head, platelets and red blood cells, and finally when the time comes that he is no longer able to breathe on his own, oxygen to his lungs. And it will come, but not yet. All things alien in this hospital ship have become commonplace. Its creatures traverse the dim quarters, speaking of my son and the thirty other children on this floor in detached, hushed clinical tones that belie the seriousness of his condition for those who speak the language.
A language that I am learning by immersion. The clinical ones feed substance into his veins, attach leads to his heart, drill holes in his head and look inside at my authorization with their space-age technology. I sign the forms that warn of complication, sickness and even death. And that is ok, because they will save his life. They will save his life and I am a good father. I did not make him sick. I checked. There’s nothing we could have done to prevent this, I am told. My mind swirls in the sea of carcinogens, which seem float as a film on the surface of existence. What about the cheap toy we let him put in his mouth? Our cell phones? The fast food? The sun? The sin and corruption I see in my own heart? Certainly I had something to do with this, and so I can fix it with my love. I have him here by my side and I don’t leave him unless I must, and I only browse the internet and watch movies on the computer, but I don’t play video games, because I am a good father. Tonight, as I sit here at my kitchen table writing this column, awash in the memories of Joel and the last four years that blend together, indistinguishable in their time, and blurring in their space. I feel them drawn away from me in a current that travels one way. So I have made it my job to gather them, hurriedly reassembling them in poetry and prose, reanimating them in code and sculpture and reliving them in the one form I refused to let myself escape into - a video game we are constructing by the name, That Dragon, Cancer. Come to think of it, maybe I should add some aliens.

PARY IDEAS
Be My V Valentine by Abby Larson, Founder and Editor of Style Me Pretty & Style Me Pretty Living Photos by White Loft Studios
Every year I get excited for Valentine’s Day to come around the corner – not just because of the romance, or the break from the winter blahs, but because it’s practically required to decorate in the prettiest manner possible. Valentine’s Day is also so much sweeter when you can share it with the whole family, so we came up with this pintsized party designed just for your little ones! We wanted to create a cozy afternoon for friends and family with activities for fun-to-make valentines with rock candy or balloons and more. We also served kid and mom-approved recipes for everyone to enjoy – think heart-shaped fruit kabobs, pretty as pie Shirley Temples with a cherry twist and adorable letter-shaped Valentine cookies – a menu fit for a V-Day Princess!

GAËLLE WIZENBERG Founder of Charlie Banana
Born to French idealist parents, Gaëlle Wizenberg entered her life with a belief – one creates her own path to a better world. Before she turned two, Gaëlle’s parents built a 65 ft. sailboat and set out upon the world’s oceans in search of adventure. In such quarters, one’s imagination is a powerful force, and young Gaëlle learned the advantages of recycling, saving, and creating beautiful things from the mariner’s milieu. At age five, her parents settled in the French Caribbean island paradise and Gaëlle spent her formative years walking the white sands and nurturing her creativity. But an adventurer’s soul surrenders to the call of foreign lands. Thirsty for adventure, Gaëlle moved to Canada where she met her husband, Darryl. “While most people dream of a blue lagoon, as a child I always wanted a nice house with a beautiful green lawn,” giggles Wizenberg. For 13 years, Gaëlle nurtured her green lawn as she worked for Apptastic Software, a Canadian company that catered to the Toy and seasonal Industry in North America and Hong Kong. Her creative mind still un-satiated, she took Art history and interior design classes for several years and found them invigorating. Then, in 2003, she moved to Hong Kong were she fell in love with Asian culture. Her everyday work included: Import and export, meetings with toy inventors, visiting customer’s showrooms for training and technical support.

Living in Hong Kong, where pollution is a real day to day issue, she started her own crusade to find the best products for her family. She discovered an absence of quality consumer goods and considered designing products for a healthier world. When she was six months pregnant with her son, Gaëlle came into contact with her first cloth diaper. The kaleidoscope came together. “So heavenly soft and comfortable - so cute and such a misconceived product – why isn’t every parents using cloth diapers? Has the world gone insane? What is not to Love?” Wizenberg says… and that’s where it all began. Inspired by the infinite images she’d seen through her nomadic lifestyle, she left the toy industry to pursue motherhood. Gaëlle’s entrepreneurial natural talents eventually lead her to start her own company. Today, Wizenberg journeys across the world in support of a greater cause. Combining her passion for a better world, her love for environmentally safe baby-products and her passion for design, Gaëlle set out to create the healthiest, softest and most stylish line of cloth diapers and baby accessories. Charlie Banana® launched in October 2010 and Charlie, Gaëlle’s daughter, has been sporting the cloth diapers - swim diapers that carry her namesake - since she was born. “The Charlie Banana® logo is inspired from the Chinese symbol of double happiness - a cherished sym-
bol in Asia. Her desire for products healthy for you and healthy for the planet, a true double happiness” says Wizenberg. As she works with major retailers like Amazon, Target, Babies R Us, Mothercare as well as many devoted independent retailers, Charlie Banana® is becoming a household name in stores all over the world. Gaelle has proven to the retail industry that cloth diapering should have a permanent place in their stores. Cloth is trendy and one of the best baby items a parent can buy. Cloth parents are witty, fun, caring and proud to cloth diaper their baby. They are a fine community of dreamers! Gaëlle’s strong and unwavering belief in a world where every individual action counts is the motivation behind the brand – making small changes through family eco-decisions, will make a footprint on the world’s future. At this stage, every bit counts. Gaëlle looks forward to continuing the expansion of the Charlie Banana® brand, which now includes modern 2-in-1 cloth diapers, Swim diapers, organic cotton underwear, and most recently, Environmentally Safe Laundry Soap for all baby’s finest clothes and diapers.
