From the President

reetings! We shouldn’t be surprised, but, here we are at the “half-way” point in the school year, making me think of Simon and Garfunkel’s “Hazy Shade of Winter” that begins with the lyrics “Time, time, time, see what’s become of me while I looked around for my possibilities”. We may look back fondly (or not) at what we’ve accomplished so far this year, but our focus is now on the possibilities of springtime and all we have ahead of us. Looking back, NDACDA’s first semester successes were Surround the State in Sound (SSIS) and our membership drive. Thank you to Jacy Walker and everyone who helped her organize SSIS. And thank you to all of the teachers who took time to involve students in this wonderful opportunity. An addition to SSIS this year was the opportunity for directors to bring their top five unison, two-part or three-part songs to share and discuss. Mike Weber headed the membership drive this year. Great news: We have 250 current members of which an astounding 93 are new members! Thank you to Mike for his work and to all of members who choose to be involved and who have encouraged people to join this great organization. Thank you for choosing daily to be the best choir director and teacher you can be, for the time you give of yourself, and for everything you do for NDACDA. January is the time for renewal and the promise of spring. Most of us set some type of resolutions for the New Year and we have had a few weeks to establish and follow through on those goals. It is my hope that a form of renewal we choose is to come to the NDACDA State Conference at NDSU in Fargo on February 2 & 3. President-elect Cheryl McIntyre has organized a wonderful sched4 | The Chorister • Fall 2016

ule for teacher inservice. Information is available in this issue as well as on the NDACDA website at http:// www.ndacda. c o m / s t a t e conference. Please come! If you and I have not met, I hope you will introduce yourself to me. I am so grateful to Allyse Dunnigan and Jessica Stoppleworth who are chairs for the conference honor choirs. Their job is huge. Allyse wrote this report: Auditions and selection for the North Dakota Middle Level/Jr. High Honor Choir continue to be strong. In 2017, there were 701 auditions from 69 schools. This year for the 2018 Festival, there were 725 auditions from 76 schools! These auditions get narrowed down by three judges to 190 singing slots and 40 alternate positions. The Mixed Honor Choir is an SATB choir featuring 100 7-9th graders. This year they are directed by New Rockford-Sheyenne director Annette Hovey. Mrs. Hovey has been a music educator for twenty-one years and her choir recently performed at the North Dakota Music Educators Association Conference. The Treble Choir is an SSA choir featuring 90 7 -9th grade female singers. This year they are directed by Dr. Andrea Ramsey. Dr. Ramsey is an ASCAPlus award-winning composer as well as a renowned conductor, scholar and music educator. We are delighted to host these exceptional directors! The NDACDA board changed the timing of the presentation of the Director of the Year Awards. In the past, the recipients were

announced at the conference concerts and were a “surprise” to the directors. We decided to announce the recipients’ in advance of the conference so family members, friends, and administrators could make plans to be present at the concert. I am pleased to announce that this year’s Director of the Year is Shiela Zinke, Director of Choral Music in the Valley City Junior and Senior High Schools.

I hope the conference will provide renewal and inspiration for the rest of your school year. Perhaps when May comes, we can all look back and think “Time, time, time, look what’s become of me” and believe that we made the most of our time. It’s the “springtime of our lives”. Please contact me anytime with comments, questions, or concerns at pdbartunek@gmail.com.

Surround the State in Song

O

n October 14th, over 500 fifth and sixth grade singers from 80 schools gathered in six locations in North Dakota to perform at Surround the State in Song. Our blue shirts covered stages in Bismarck, Grand Forks, Minot, Dickinson, Fargo, and Jamestown as young singers gave passionate and musically rich performances. These students were selected by their teachers for this event. At several sites percussion, lights, kazoos, additional movement and even sign language were added to the performance. The same songs were performed simultaneously around the state and included Bumblebee by Sally Albrecht, Lightning by Greg Gilpin, There is Peace by Jim Papoulis, One Candle by Andy Beck, and Colonel Bogey’s Grand Old Flag by Greg Gilpin. This is the second year that participating teachers brought their “Top 5” unison, 2 part and 3 part Choir selections to share and collaborate. A goal of ACDA is to help teachers connect and share resources and we are pleased to have provided this collaborative session geared specifically for repertoire for young developing voices. These selections were of various styles and difficulty levels. Teachers shared their favorite composer’s music and ways they have used these pieces with their groups.

Directors for this event included Deb Wald in Fargo, Charlette Moe in Grand Forks, Melanie Popejoy in Bismarck, Maralee Sickler in Dickinson, Connie Stordalen in Jamestown, and Rebecca Petrick in Minot. These fine directors allowed students to bring energy and creative thinking to the music and to each performance. I would like to thank the wonderful accompanists for their work throughout the day. They included Andrew Steinberg in Fargo, Alyce Stokke in Grand Forks, 8 | The Chorister • Fall 2016

John Clodfelter in Bismarck, Becky Schwartz in Dickinson, Heather Aune in Jamestown, and Elizabeth Roberts in Minot. As we all know, having an accomplished accompanist is invaluable in the choral classroom and at festivals. This festival would not be possible without the numerous volunteer hours of our six site managers: Sarah Barnum in Fargo, Amy DeWitt in Grand Forks, Rachel Douts in Bismarck, Laurae Dykema in Dickinson, Cheryl McIntyre in Jamestown, and Lindsay Kerzmann in Minot. It is the efforts of these individuals that brought the ideas and intentions of myself and of NDACDA to fruition. Without willing directors, accompanists and site managers, none of this would be possible. Musical selections are decided on by combining teacher suggestions and perusing new music selections. We would like to thank JW Pepper and Popplers Music for assisting us by having music titles and selections available at their choral reading sessions presented in the summer months. If you have suggested titles that you would like to see in the future for Surround the State in Song, p l e a s e c o n t a c t jacy_walker@bismarckschools.org. Additionally, if you would like to be more involved in your nearest Surround the State site location, please reach out! We would love to see more schools involved in this one day event that celebrates the joy of singing among our young students. Thank you to all of the participating teachers for fostering the joy of singing with your students. We know that many of the students will have lasting musical memories.
