GOOD SCHOOLS REPORT

The majority of graduates and diplomates in SA are in the fields of science, engineering, technology and business. Close to 38 000 students graduate annually in the field of education, almost half of them from Unisa and North West University.

A

n interview I conducted with the Headmaster of St John’s College in Johannesburg, Roger Cameron, provided much food for thought as we compiled this report. Cameron revealed that the school places a “small emphasis” on business subjects, preferring to focus on the liberal arts. The school’s purpose is “much more than passing an exam”. Subjects like life orientation, divinity, maths and English better equip young men with the thinking skills required in a modern world, he says. Neither accounting nor business economics is offered at the school. “We’re not convinced that teaching boys accounting is as valuable as teaching them something like history, which gives them a broad-based understanding of how the world’s formed,” he says. It’s one example of the changing landscape at our schools, as institutions flex academic muscles in areas in which their students have excelled over many decades.

Another interesting trend on the local schooling horizon is the increasing use of tablets and laptops among pupils as young as five. This is still an area of conflict, with some experts like Spark Schools founder Stacey Brewer maintaining that software application is more valuable to young minds than hardware. Brewer calls iPads in the classrooms “babysitting devices” and has rather spearheaded the use of Google Chromebook computers in her schools, with a focus on software that reinforces classroom instruction. Our introductory feature on the use of new technologies in schools explores this subject further. We’re proud to once again present our annual curation of SA’s top-performing public and private schools, in association with Old Mutual. We hope these pages help make your decision about schooling your children that much easier. SHEENA ADAMS PROJECT EDITOR

As Nelson Mandela said: ‘Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.’ Old Mutual believes creating this positive future is everyone’s social responsibility. Over the years it’s supported many education initiatives across the country. One of its most innovative interventions is the R1,2 billion Schools Fund launched to finance the expansion and infrastructure of independent low-fee-paying schools to achieve quality education outcomes. Parents also need to prioritise their children’s education and start saving for it the day their children are born. Old Mutual supports this through a range of savings and investment products and services. Old Mutual is proud to sponsor DESTINY’s Good Schools Report. page 158 | AUGUST 2014

In recent years, about 10 000 students from public higher education and training facilities graduated with a Master’s degree, while just over 1 500 students graduated with doctorates. The University of Pretoria produced the highest number of doctoral students in 2011 (206), followed by the University of the Witwatersrand (169) and the University of Cape Town (163).

THE RISE OF THE

NEW-AGE SCHOOL

The waiting lists into the hallowed halls of SA’s old, traditional schools are being given a run for their money by a crop of innovative, bold – and much cheaper – independent schools, focused on using new ideas and technologies as part of a blended learning model Written by Sheena Adams

T

he jury’s still worryingly out on whether there could be a link between the excessive use of tablets and the rocketing rates of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) among children. But what’s certain is that in controlled environments, the use of tablets and laptops in schools has far surpassed expectations of education experts. It’s estimated that spending on tablets in primary and high schools globally increased by 60% last year. In the USA alone, schools were expected to buy 3,5 million tablets by the end of 2014. Nowhere was the effectiveness of tablets as an educational tool more apparent than in a bold experiment run by the NGO One Laptop per Child in Ethiopia. In an impoverished village called Wenchi, the organisation dropped off 20 lowcost tablet computers without any instructions and simply observed how the children who were given access

to them taught themselves to turn them on and begin using the preinstalled apps. Within seven months, the youngsters had begun to teach themselves English and, according to the organisation, had already learnt more than they would have in one year of pre-school. This proved beyond doubt that children, even in the most remote and impoverished of contexts, can teach themselves to read and then learn other subjects using technology. Advocates for educational reform see the use of tablets and other technologies in the classroom as a brave opportunity to revamp what was essentially a schooling schedule designed in an “agrarian era”, to quote the Washington Post. It also productively steers children away from the once all-encompassing belief that teachers are the absolute founts of all knowledge. Instead of “sit and get”, children are able to control their own pace and style of learning by

using new technologies. In SA, the idea’s gaining traction through the astronomical growth of companies like listed private education group Curro

“Knowledge is an absolute commodity which changes all the time. What matters is what you can do with it – with others – to make a difference or solve a problem.” Holdings. The company’s share price has risen five-fold since its listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange in 2011 and has seen its earnings multiply comprehensively. It has 31 independent schools in the group, which cater to 28 000 students. Ten new Curro schools are on track for completion before the end of 2014 and the company has a growth forecast of opening its 80th school by 2020. Although local figures are hard to come by, the spurt in investment in education abroad gives a firm indication of this upward trend. According to Chicago consultancy GSV Advisors, American venture capitalists are said to have invested just under $1,2 billion in education and training companies in 2013 – four times the amount they invested in 2008. Curro trumpets what it calls “21stcentury learning” – a method of incorporating innovative technology in classrooms in order to raise children who are “digital natives”. The schools have an integrated IT curriculum, incorporating the latest software and cloud technology. They also optimise the use of tablets in classrooms and in addition to focusing on the three Rs (reading, writing and arithmetic), have added four Cs (communication, collaboration, critical thinking/problem-solving, creativity/ innovation) and two Ms (motivation and metacognition, a high-level form of understanding, or “knowing without knowing”). Another successful South African educational start-up is social entrepreneur Stacey Brewer’s eAdvance collection of Spark Schools. Based only in Johannesburg for now, the eAdvance group is revolutionising the local landscape through a blended learning model

which combines classroom teaching with the deliberate use of technology to enhance students’ results in what they call the “Learning Lab”. It’s all about “individualised instruction” for Brewer. Students spend 70-80 minutes of each school day working with software online. These instructional programs mirror classroom standards in literacy and maths and continually assess students so that they study at a pace appropriate to each of them. Teachers are then free to spend more time on thinking skills and co-operative

group learning in the classroom. “We use Google Chromebooks and have adapted software for classroom interaction. The hardware-driven approach using tablets that many schools have adopted – as opposed to focusing on the software used – doesn’t always make for valuable data-gathering. It’s used as a babysitting tool in many instances,” she says. Impressively, the schools also boast low fees of R15 750 per year. Costs are kept down by the use of innovative technology, which saves teachers’ time, and a clever company structure, divided into a property page 162 | AUGUST 2014

and management firm. Schools pay rental and management fees to eAdvance, which runs the properties. This eliminates any administrative burdens and allows for economies of scale. There’s also no middle management (just a principal, an academic dean and teachers) and parents are requested to dedicate 30 hours a year to the school, helping with tasks like photocopying and marking homework. Pioneer Academies is yet another example of a groundbreaking education model. It’s a network of independent schools with a curriculum based on the cognitive and emotional development of students. The company aims to prepare students for “success in an uncertain future” by focusing on thought, leadership, self-mastery and resilience. Founder Chinezi Chijioke says modern education feels to him the way “personal computing must have been in the early Eighties”. “Our quest is to develop an ‘Apple’, a pioneer of great 21st-century schooling,” he adds. And the organisation plans to do it for annual fees of R20 000-R40 000. The first school opens in Ormonde, Johannesburg, next year. “A lot of what’s out there is fixated on how many distinctions they get or how good their rugby team is,” says Chijioke. “Providing education for young people to succeed in life beyond school is more holistic than that. It’s about building mastery across three areas: intellectual rigour, leadership and service, and personal mastery, [which comprise] the self-awareness, perseverance and reflective practice necessary to be successful.” Wide-ranging workshops held in Johannesburg with parents offered fascinating insights into the outcomes many of them wanted for their children. Asked what they were missing in schools today, the most common answer was “critical thinking and problem-solving”. Chijioke doesn’t believe most schools are doing a good enough job of producing innovators and problem-solvers. “Knowledge is an absolute commodity and it changes all the time. What matters is what you can do with it – with others – to make a difference or solve a problem. And we have plenty of opportunities on this continent to solve problems. If we can develop young people with the intellectual capacity to solve problems and the leadership skills to work with others

in doing something about it, I think we’ll succeed in building individuals who are creators of their future, not just workers in it.” Innovation also extends to methods of teaching. Teachers will work in teams, led by a master teacher and including two to four dedicated grade or subject teachers. It’s an approach that encourages collaboration and makes for a “continuous apprenticeship” for teachers to hone their craft throughout their careers. Pioneer will also have an affiliated Educators’ Training Institute which will give teachers access to peers, experts and technological resources from around the world. The company’s aiming to open 100 schools in the first 10 years and is being funded by a group of local and international private investors. Like eAdvance, Pioneer’s also investing in a property company that will hold the school properties under one umbrella and provide security of tenure. The architecture of the schools will also differ from the norm. Chijioke says they plan to minimise corridors and maximise learning space. “Instead of traditional classrooms, our rooms will have removable walls between them, so students are free to problem-solve in large or small groups. There’ll be a workshop space next to those rooms for individualised, online blended work,” he explains. Teachers will also have access to “pull-out rooms” for one-on-one consultations. “It’s about making sure it’s both efficient and beautiful,” he says. Exciting as these innovations in the schooling system are, traditionalist supporters of iconic institutions like Johannesburg’s St John’s College, for instance, are in no way declining – at least, not yet. Headmaster Roger Cameron says the school’s currently on a drive to increase its cultural diversity in a bid to strengthen its sense of community. Interestingly, St John’s matric pupils follow the government’s National Senior Certificate curriculum (but write the Independent Examinations Board [IEB] matric exams) and had a 100% university entrance pass rate last year. He says a comprehensive programme ensures the school supports “both talented and less

able” pupils. However, he stresses that St John’s purpose is about more than getting its boys to pass exams. All matric students who pass are granted a National Senior Certificate qualification, but a dual examination system exists, with both the IEB and the government-sector Umalusi setting their own exam papers. CEO of the IEB, Anne Oberholzer, believes the IEB exams better prepare learners for tertiary education and notes that some high-profile schools, including Bishops and Herschel in Cape Town, have historically chosen to write the state exams instead – “for a variety of reasons”. Another great strength of schools like St John’s remains the rich and influential old boys’ network that students tap into. “It’s about networking, accessing contacts and developing opportunities. If you know people who have access to resources and expertise, and can tap into them through classmates, that’s obviously of huge value. But it’s a process driven only by individuals who go after it. It’s not a jobs-for-pals scenario, the way it used to be. If you have talent, ability, ideas and access to people who support you, that’s a sure-fire recipe for success,” says Cameron. PIONEER ACADEMIES’ LEARNING MODEL Try first: In every subject, pupils try solving a problem or conducting analysis before engaging with a teacher. This deepens the children’s understanding, increases their motivation and strengthens their thinking skills. Work in teams: From problemsolving to interdisciplinary projects and campus life, pupils regularly work in teams to learn from and with each other. However, there are also scheduled hours for individual studying and work, and pupils are taught to use that time well. Pupils helping pupils: Pupils learn effectively from each other in daily problem-solving teams or from peer tutors during workshop time. Pupil tutors become recognised as “big brothers” or “big sisters” and achieve higher levels of mastery through helping others.

Students at Sacred Heart use iPads throughout the day to access subject materials, record notes, create projects and search online for supplemental information about the topics they’re studying. Teachers have also discovered creative ways to integrate iPads into their teaching to make lessons fun, interesting and packed with activity. The primary school has used iPads to create engaging lessons that reinforce the building blocks of learning. For example, the My Story and Essential Skeleton apps are used by teachers. The My Story app combines language and visual learning to build vocabulary and facilitate language structure, allowing pupils to demonstrate their skills in an engaging way. The app also teaches them social skills through teamwork and presentations. The Essential Skeleton is a 3D medical app that

“You’ll see all kinds of remarkable things happening around those iPads in our school. Things we didn’t even think might happen.” Colin Northmore, Head, Sacred Heart teaches pupils about anatomy and helps them to actively engage through virtual discovery. It also allows them to choose the aspects on which they want to be challenged and progress at their own rate. The children have such fun while learning about the body that they don’t even realise they’re tackling a difficult concept. In the high school, the ZA Books app and mobility of iPad allow for each Grade 7 pupil to have all their textbooks on one device. They have instant access to annotate and take notes in class, as well as communicate with teachers and other pupils about their homework activities after school.

OLD MUTUAL TIP For a child starting grade R this year, an average public school education is expected to cost you around R530 000 in school fees alone, from grades R-12, and a private school R1,8 million. this excludes extramurals, books and stationery. Even more challenging is the fact that education fees increase on average by 9% a year, which is a lot higher than the normal inflation rate. these fees will probably increase above any rate of salary increases you may receive. to send the same child to university to do a three-year degree in the future will cost about R420 000 in fees alone (the full three years), excluding the cost of books, travelling, accommodation and pocket money. these expenses may be tough on your monthly budget, so you may want to consider saving from today.

ST ANDREW’S We are a family of historic, independent premier boarding schools. Each school has its own campus with its individual aesthetic architecture and atmosphere. The schools offer highly skilled individual attention to each pupil, focused on fostering their individual talents. Classes at St Andrew’s Preparatory School are co-educational from Grades 000-3. Girls then move to St Andrew’s Diocesan School for Girls (DSG) from Grades 4-12. Boys from Grades 8-12 attend St Andrew’s College. This allows for the differential development paths of boys and girls. While they remain distinct, single-gender schools, boys and girls are co-instructed from Grade 10. OLD MUTUAL TIP: Most children are ready to start grade R at the age of six. If your child’s born today, you’ll need to save at least R460 per month to send him or her to university to do a three-year degree. However, if your child started grade R this year, this amount is at least R680 per month for university tuition fees alone. these are savings required if you expect investment returns of 10% a year and if you increase your premium with education inflation of 9% every year. Remember that your salary may increase every year with inflation too. Achieving your financial goal is therefore much more attainable if you start at a reasonable level, but continue increasing your premiums every year as your salary increases. speak to a financial adviser or broker for the appropriate solution for you or contact us on tel: 0860 606 060.
