THE FIRST READING: READER:

A Reading from the Word of God written in the first book of Samuel Chapter 3 beginning at the 1st verse.

Now the boy Samuel was ministering to the LORD under Eli. The word of the LORD was rare in those days; visions were not widespread. At that time Eli, whose eyesight had begun to grow dim so that he could not see, was lying down in his room; the lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the temple of the LORD, where the ark of God was. Then the LORD called, "Samuel! Samuel!" and he said, "Here I am! and ran to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But he said, "I did not call; lie down again." So he went and lay down. The LORD called again, "Samuel!" Samuel got up and went to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you called me." But he said, "I did not call, my son; lie down again. Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD, and the word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him. The LORD called Samuel again, a third time. And he got up and went to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you called me." Then Eli perceived that the LORD was calling the boy. Therefore Eli said to Samuel, "Go, lie down; and if he calls you, you shall say, 'Speak, LORD, for your servant is listening.'" So Samuel went and lay down in his place. Now the LORD came and stood there, calling as before, "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening." Reader: ALL:

PSALM 139

1. LORD you have searched me | out and | known me; * you know my sitting down and my rising up; you dis | cern my | thoughts from a | far. 2. You trace my | journeys and my | resting-places * and are ac | quainted with | all | my ways. 3. Indeed there is not a | word on my | lips, * but you O LORD | know it | alto | gether. 4. You press upon me be | hind and be | fore * and | lay your | hand up | on me. 5. Such knowledge is too | wonderful for | me; * it is so | high that I | cannot at | tain to it. 12. For you yourself created my | inmost | parts; * you knit me to | gether in my | mother's | womb. 13. I will thank you because I am | marvelously | made; * your works are wonderful | and I | know it | well. 14. My body was not | hidden from | you, * while I was being made in secret and | woven in the | depths of the | earth. 15. Your eyes beheld my limbs, yet unfinished in the womb; all of them were | written in your | book; * they were fashioned day by day, when as | yet | there was | none of them. 16. How deep I find your | thoughts, O | God! * how | great | is the | sum of them! !4

17. If I were to count them, they would be more in | number than the | sand; * to count them all, my life span would | need to | be like | yours. Paul’s 1st letter to the Corinthians Chapter 6 beginning at the 12th verse

"All things are lawful for me," but not all things are beneficial. "All things are lawful for me," but I will not be dominated by anything. "Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food," and God will destroy both one and the other. The body is meant not for fornication but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. And God raised the Lord and will also raise us by his power. Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Should I therefore take the members of Christ and make them members of a prostitute? Never! Do you not know that whoever is united to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For it is said, "The two shall be one flesh. But anyone united to the Lord becomes one spirit with him. Shun fornication! Every sin that a person commits is outside the body; but the fornicator sins against the body itself. Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body. Reader: ALL:

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John Glory to Christ our Saviour. The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, "Follow me.” Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, "We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.” Nathanael said to him, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Philip said to him, "Come and see.” When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, "Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” Nathanael asked him, "Where did you get to know me?" Jesus answered, "I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.” Nathanael replied, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” Jesus answered, "Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.” And he said to him, "Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man." The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord !6

From the Rector’s Notebook: Firstly congratulations must be offered to Her Excellency Dame Sandra Prunella Mason Dame GCMG, DA, QC on her appointment and installation as Governor-General of Barbados. My association with Her Excellency goes back some twenty-seven years ago when I served as Priestin-Charge of the St. Jude’s Church, where she continues to be a member. Both in the sacred liturgy and in our private devotions we offer prayers for our new GovernorGeneral praying that God almighty would be with her as she carries out the duties in the highest office in our land. It was a wonderful opportunity to be present as Chairman of the Barbados Christian Council to witness the ceremony and to hear her first speech as Governor-General. Her Excellency used the occasion to mention some of the challenges that we are experiencing as a nation, and with true christian insight interprets these as opportunities to “draw on our collective strengths as a people to ensure that we are able to march proudly and gallantly into the future”. This will certainly be vital if we are to proceed as folks with strength and hope. We can only hope that our young people have been watching to see that as Barbadians we can reach for the highest ideals possible for us as human !7

beings and that we are the ones who hold ourselves back. Even as the New Year dawns we are hearing reports that the violent behaviour among a set of our young people has been brought over from the previous year. As Christians and people with good intention, we must continue to encourage and implore all parents to be vigilant over the habits and practices of their children and young people. In this way we would be able to discern trends in the various patterns and seek guidance where such becomes necessary. Our young people all possess the power and ability to aspire to great heights both here and across the world. Let us ensure that we can raise from our communities young people who in due course can attain to the highest public and private offices in our land contributing fruitfully to our island home. Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, (The Rev’d Canon) Rector

‌ be filled with the Spirit, as you sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs among yourselves, singing and making melody to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks to God the Father at all times and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 5: 19 - 20

HEALTH CORNER: By Sophia Marshall, Ph.D Dietary fiber or roughage is a type of carbohydrate that is obtained from plant sources. It isn’t digested by our bodies and passes relatively intact through the stomach, small intestine, and colon and out of the body. Fiber is classified as soluble if it dissolves in water and insoluble if it does not. Soluble fiber is found in the following: ➢

Most fruits

Barley

Oat bran

Nuts and seeds

Beans and Peas

Insoluble fiber is found in the following •

Whole wheat bread

Wheat bran

Brown rice

Whole grain cereals

Seeds

Most vegetables

Fruits

Both types of fiber have important health benefits and we should eat a variety of different plant foods to ensure that we get the greatest benefits. WHAT ARE THESE HEALTH BENEFITS?

1.

Significant reduction in risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, obesity and certain gastrointestinal diseases.

2.

Increased dietary fiber in obese individuals significantly enhances weight loss. High-fiber diets tend to give a feeling of fullness for a longer time.

3.

Normalizes bowel movements by increasing the weight and size of our stool and softening it. A bulky stool is easier to pass and hence decreasing chances of constipation.

4.

Helps maintain bowel health by reducing the risk of developing hemorrhoids and small pouches in your colon (diverticular disease).
