THE FIRST READING: READER:

A Reading from the Word of God written in the book of Jonah Chapter 3 beginning at the 1st verse.

The word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time, saying, "Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and proclaim to it the message that I tell you. So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days' walk across. Jonah began to go into the city, going a day's walk. And he cried out, "Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown! And the people of Nineveh believed God; they proclaimed a fast, and everyone, great and small, put on sackcloth. When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it. Reader: ALL:

Nonne Deo?

6. For God alone my soul in | silence | waits; * | truly, my | hope is in | him. 7. He alone is my rock and | my sal | vation, * my stronghold, | so that I | shall not be | shaken. 8. THE EPISTLE READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in

Paul’s 1st letter to the Corinthians Chapter 7 beginning at the 29th verse

I mean, brothers and sisters, the appointed time has grown short; from now on, let even those who have wives be as though they had none, and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no possessions, and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away. Reader: ALL:

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John Glory to Christ our Saviour.

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.” As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea--for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, "Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him. The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord From the Rector’s Notebook: The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is a period of heightened activity of prayer and reflection for Christian churches across the world. It is organized by the World Council of Churches (WCC) from its Head Office in Geneva, Switzerland. !6

According to the website of the WCC it is the broadest and most inclusive among the many organized expressions of the modern ecumenical movement. The Barbados Christian Council (BXC) is a member of the WCC and is therefore observing the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. The Week is observed from January 18- 25, 2018 using the theme “Your right Hand O Lord, glorious in power” inspired by Exodus 15:6 The executive of the BXC has organized a number of events in the observance of this the Week. These include a call for all Barbadians to participate in a National Day of Prayer - (this was held on on Thursday of last week) and an Ecumenical Service to be held in the St. Paul’s Church on Bay Street on Tuesday January 23 at 7:30pm with the Bishop of Barbados and Archbishop of the West Indies Dr. John Holder as preacher. With regard to the Ecumenical Service, it is not only religious organizations that have been asked to be involved; but also civic, political and other organizations have been invited. It is hoped inspired to regardless or religious

that in all of these activities we can be work towards the unity of all humanity of geographical location, race, culture affiliation.

Taking our local context into consideration we give thanks for nationhood asking forgiveness for the times we have faltered and asking for God’s !7

guidance as we deal with the issues pertaining to our young people and the economic and other matters that confront us on a daily basis.. As general elections are constitutionally due this year the BXC reminds that we are duty bound to pray for all candidates and for a campaign that is conducted according to the highest moral standards. It is the hope and prayer of the Barbados Christian Council that we can all join together for the common good of our communities. May God’s grace rest on all who are involved in the work of ecumenism and may we fulfill the mind of Christ, that as his followers, we may be united both in body and mind. Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, (The Rev’d Canon) Rector

HEALTH CORNER: By Sophia Marshall, Ph.D By now, every member of St. David’s Church should be involved in some form of regular exercise! (Hint Hint) Therefore after that bold statement, this is just a reminder of the phases that should be included in each exercise session. There are as follows: •

Warm-up: A minimum of 5 to 10 minutes of low to moderate intensity cardiovascular and muscular endurance activities

Stretching: At least 10 minutes of stretching exercises performed after warm-up or cool-down phase

Conditioning or sports-related exercise: 20 to 60 minutes of aerobic, resistance and/or sport activities

Cool-down: At least 5 to 10 minutes of low to moderate intensity cardiovascular and muscular endurance activities

Why is warm –up important? It allows the body to prepare for the demands of the conditioning or sports phase of the exercise program. It is designed to increase body temperature and reduce the potential for after-exercise muscle soreness. Why is cool-down important? This phase allows for the gradual recovery of heart rate, blood pressure and removal of metabolic end products from the muscles used during the more intense conditioning phase.
