THE FIRST READING: READER:

A Reading from the Word of God written in the book of Deuteronomy Chapter 18 beginning at the 15th verse.

The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own people; you shall heed such a prophet. This is what you requested of the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said: "If I hear the voice of the LORD my God any more, or ever again see this great fire, I will die. Then the LORD replied to me: "They are right in what they have said. I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their own people; I will put my words in the mouth of the prophet, who shall speak to them everything that I command. Anyone who does not heed the words that the prophet shall speak in my name, I myself will hold accountable. But any prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, or who presumes to speak in my name a word that I have not commanded the prophet to speak--that prophet shall die. Reader: ALL:

THE EPISTLE READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in Paul’s 1st letter to the Corinthians Chapter 8 beginning at the 1st verse

Now concerning food sacrificed to idols: we know that "all of us possess knowledge." Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up. Anyone who claims to know something does not yet have the necessary knowledge; but anyone who loves God is known by him. Hence, as to the eating of food offered to idols, we know that "no idol in the world really exists," and that "there is no God but one.” Indeed, even though there may be so-called gods in heaven or on earth-as in fact there are many gods and many lords— yet for us there is one God, the Father, from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom are all things and through whom we exist. It is not everyone, however, who has this knowledge. Since some have become so accustomed to idols until now, they still think of the food they eat as food offered to an idol; and their conscience, being weak, is defiled. "Food will not bring us close to God." We are no worse off if we do not eat, and no better off if we do. But take care that this liberty of yours does not somehow become a stumbling block to the weak. For if others see you, who possess knowledge, eating in the temple of an idol, might they not, since their conscience is weak, be encouraged to the point of eating food sacrificed to idols? So by your knowledge those weak believers for whom Christ died are destroyed. But when you thus sin against members of your family, and wound their conscience when it is weak, you sin against Christ. Therefore, if food is a cause of their falling, I will never eat meat, so that I may not cause one of them to fall. Reader: ALL:

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark Glory to Christ our Saviour.

They went to Capernaum; and when the sabbath came, he entered the synagogue and taught. They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes. Just then there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit, and he cried out, "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.” But Jesus rebuked him, saying, "Be silent, and come out of him!” And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. They were all amazed, and they kept on asking one another, "What is this? A new teaching--with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.” At once his fame began to spread throughout the surrounding region of Galilee. Here in our island, it was an exciting and spiritfilled opportunity to join with Christians across the various denominations of the Barbados Christian Council (BXC) for a period of prayer, reflection, public worship and the theological consideration of the social and national events in our public life. A n g l i c a n i s m p o s s e s s e s t h e s t r u c t u ra l a n d theological foundation that enables us to partner with and engage persons within the ecumenical movement without losing its essential characteristics. During his tenure as Archbishop of Canterbury William Temple, a founder of the World Council of Churches (WCC), held the view that churches were called to go as far as conscience would permit in showing that fundamentally there is one and only one Church of Christ. Temple in considering the divisions that exist stated in his book “Fellowship with God” that “We have been content for the most part to be religious one by one; there has been no united army of Christian people determined to order the world on Christian principles.” As a Christian people we must make a difference in this Barbados and we will only be able to do so effectively if we sit at table and discuss the issues as only church can. The Christian Church continues to be the watchman of society guarding those essential morals and principles that we hold dear and this can never be !7

handed over to others, no matter how wellmeaning they may be. The Archbishop The Most Rev’d Dr. John W. D. Holder, CBE was preacher at the Ecumenical Service that was held in the St. Paul’s Church last week. One of the fantastic aspects of the Service was the Prayers of the People. This intercessory act reflected the view of Willem Adolph Visser 't Hooft (a Dutch theologian, who became the first Secretary General of the World Council of Churches in 1948,) that "the ecumenical movement can only live, if it lives in the intercession ... convictions ... sacrificial actions of church members.” In the ecumenical liturgy the Nicene Creed was recited and then a representative from each member church of the BXC linked arms and offered prayers separately for church unity and for all humanity. Having said the Lord’s Prayer together, we sang the Peace Song, “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me. May God almighty give us grace as we intercede for church and nation and may we ever strive for that unity for which our Lord and Christ prayed. Your friend and priest, Noel A. HEALTH CORNER: By Sophia Marshall, Ph.D What is Alzheimer’s Disease? Alzheimer’s disease is named after Dr. Alois Alzheimer. In 1906, Dr. Alzheimer noticed changes in the brain tissue of a woman who had died of an unusual mental illness. According to the American National Institute on Aging, Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia. Dementia describes a set of symptoms that can include memory loss and difficulties with thinking, problem-solving or language. These symptoms usually develop slowly and get worse over time, becoming severe enough to interfere with daily tasks. Typical age-related memory loss and other changes compared to Alzheimer's Signs of Alzheimer's

Typical age-related changes

Poor judgment and decision making

Making a bad decision once in a while

Inability to manage a budget

Missing a monthly payment

Losing track of the date or the season

Forgetting which day it is and remembering later

Difficulty having a conversation

Sometimes forgetting which word to use

Misplacing things and being unable to retrace steps to find them

Losing things from time to time

Source: http://www.alz.org/

It is true that the majority of people with Alzheimer's are 65 and older but Alzheimer's is not just a disease of old age. Up to 5 percent of people with the disease have early onset Alzheimer's (also known as younger-onset), which often appears when someone is in their 40s or 50s. Unfortunately Alzheimer's has no current cure, but treatments for symptoms are available and research continues in hope of finding effective ways to prevent and treat it. One such area of research is the use of coconut oil in one’s diet. In her 2011 book, “Alzheimer ’s disease: What If There Was a Cure? The Story of Ketones,” Dr. Mary Newport fervently declares that her husband has shown clear improvement in his dementia with regular use of coconut oil. There has been and continues to be much debate worldwide about the validity of such a claim but persons are giving it a try.
