THE FIRST READING: READER:
A Reading from the Word of God written in the book of Isaiah Chapter 40 beginning at the 21st verse.
Have you not known? Have you not heard? Has it not been told you from the beginning? Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is he who sits above the circle of the earth, and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain, and spreads them like a tent to live in; who brings princes to naught, and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing. Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth, when he blows upon them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them off like stubble. To whom then will you compare me, or who is my equal? says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high and see: Who created these? He who brings out their host and numbers them, calling them all by name; because he is great in strength, mighty in power, not one is missing. Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, "My way is hidden from the LORD, and my right is disregarded by my God"? Have you not known? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint, and strengthens the !3
powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary, and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. Reader: ALL:

If I proclaim the gospel, this gives me no ground for boasting, for an obligation is laid on me, and woe to me if I do not proclaim the gospel! For if I do this of my own will, I have a reward; but if not of my own will, I am entrusted with a commission. What then is my reward? Just this: that in my proclamation I may make the gospel free of charge, so as not to make full use of my rights in the gospel. For though I am free with respect to all, I have made myself a slave to all, so that I might win more of them. To the Jews I became as a Jew, in order to win Jews. To those under the law I became as one under the law (though I myself am not under the law) so that I might win those under the law. To those outside the law I became as one outside the law (though I am not free from God's law but am under Christ's law) so that I might win those outside the law. To the weak I became weak, so that I might win the weak. I have become all things to all people, that I might by all means save some. I do it all for the sake of the gospel, so that I may share in its blessings. Reader: ALL:

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark Glory to Christ our Saviour.
As soon as they left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. Now Simon's mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them. That evening, at sundown, they brought to him all who were sick or possessed with demons. And the whole city was gathered around the door. And he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and cast out many demons; and he would not permit the demons to speak, because they knew him. In the morning, while it was still very dark, he got up and went out to a deserted place, and there he prayed. And Simon and his companions hunted for him. When they found him, they said to him, "Everyone is searching for you. He answered, "Let us go on to the neighboring towns, so that I may proclaim the message there also; for that is what I came out to do." And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons. The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord

From the Rector’s Notebook: Greetings: But God proves his love for us in that while we still were sinners Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 We are swiftly approaching Ash-Wednesday and the liturgical season of Lent, which prepares us for the renewal of Baptismal vows at the Great Vigil of Easter on the evening of the Holy Saturday. As the holy season approaches we consider our human condition with the errors and contradictions, hopes, fears and anxieties that all form part of who we are. In the midst of all of this we consider that despite the ambivalence of humanity, God almighty loves and cares for us and wants to see us with him where he dwells for ever. Paul the Apostle knew the struggle of what it means to be human when he wrote, I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. (Romans 7:18)
We often know what is right, we know what is good, we know what to avoid; but we do the opposite; this does not of course mean that the christian church must throw its hands in the air in the face of evil or wrong The holy church of God always holds before humani ty al l that i s good, and ri ghteous challenging the wrong and warning society of the dangers in perpetuating injustice. !7
The Old Testament is replete with the messages of the prophets; whose words often went unheeded until persons were in situations in which they would turn and seek out the same prophets for a Word from the Lord. We live in a world that is loved and graced by God in a state described theologically as already; but not yet. God has already made us perfect; but we are working toward perfection. We have not reached there as yet; but we are constantly aware of the words of our Lord. Be perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Matthew 5:48) As Lent comes into view in another week and a half and as persons engage in ascetical practices in preparation for the Easter Sacraments, we pray that the high ideals set in store for humanity may be fulfilled and the we may strive more and more to be like our Saviour and Lord. May God’s grace be with us as we prepare to leave the Christmas liturgical cycle and look towards Easter. Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, (The Rev’d Canon) Rector

HEALTH CORNER: By Sophia Marshall, Ph.D The Health of the Nation Survey undertaken by the Chronic Disease Research Centre, indicated that one in every three Barbadians has hypertension. Are you hypertensive? If you are, how have you modified your lifestyle? Do you still stand patiently in line for barbequed pig tails? What is hypertension? Hypertension is defined as having a resting systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥ 140 mmHg and/ or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≥ 90mm Hg, taking antihypertensive medication, or being told by a physician or other health professional on at least two occasions that your blood pressure is high. It leads to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, heart failure, peripheral artery disease and chronic kidney disease. The risk of cardiovascular disease doubles with every increase in SDP of 20 mm Hg or DBP of 10 mm Hg.
What can you do about it? Modify your lifestyle! Here’s how: ❖ Increase physical activity ❖ Lose weight (if needed) ❖ A DASH eating plan: ✓ diet rich in fruits and vegetables ✓ low-fat dairy products with a reduced content of saturated and total fat (DASH - Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) ❖ Salt reduction (no more than 2.4 g sodium per day) - Read your food labels! ❖ Moderation of alcohol consumption (Source: ACSM’s Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription, 8th Edition)
