A Reading from the Word of God written in the book of Genesis Chapter 17 beginning at the 1st verse.

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said to him, "I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless. And I will make my covenant between me and you, and will make you exceedingly numerous. Then Abram fell on his face; and God said to him, "As for me, this is my covenant with you: You shall be the ancestor of a multitude of nations. No longer shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the ancestor of a multitude of nations. I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you. I will establish my covenant between me and you, and your offspring after you throughout their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your offspring after you. God said to Abraham, "As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. I will bless her, and moreover I will give you a son by her. I will bless her, and she shall give rise to nations; kings of peoples shall come from her." Reader: ALL:

THE EPISTLE READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in Paul’s letter to the Romans Chapter 4 beginning at the 13th verse

For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation. For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all of us, as it is written, "I have made you the father of many nations") --in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. Hoping against hope, he believed that he would become "the father of many nations," according to what was said, "So numerous shall your descendants be. He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was already as good as dead (for he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah's womb. No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, being fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. Therefore his faith "was reckoned to him as righteousness. Now the words, "it was reckoned to him," were written not for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be reckoned to us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, who was handed over to death for our trespasses and was raised for our justification. Reader: ALL:

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark Glory to Christ our Saviour.

Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, "Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things. He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake, and for the sake of the gospel, will save it. For what will it profit them to gain the whole world and forfeit their life? Indeed, what can they give in return for their life? Those who are ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of them the Son of Man will also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels." From the Rector’s Notebook: Greetings: When we examine the life of Christ it would be clear that our Lord demonstrates the steadfast and unconditional love for all humanity. (John 3:16; 15:13) It was YHWH who according to the Book of Genesis created humanity with the capacity to love beyond the boundary of any differences that there may be among us. (Genesis 1: 27) After all of these years we still yet do not fully comprehend all that there is to know about human beings whether physically, psychologically or spirituality. When the psalmist considered the uniqueness and peculiar nature of himself as a human being, he concluded that he would never comprehend fully his own human structure. (Psalm 139: 6) What this means is that we have to be very careful about the way in which we pass judgments and make assumptions about each other. Like the psalmist long ago we yet do not fully understand all there is to know about humanity. I recently attended a conference is Paramaribo, Suriname (February 6 - 9, 2018) in which Faith Leaders from across the various religions of the Caribbean met with representatives of Key Populations, the latter, expressed the view that their clients often experienced stigma and discrimination. We as clergy from the various faiths got to hear again at first hand from the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) community about their issues as they go about their business while seeking those basic rights that are theirs as human beings. Former Science teacher and nutritionist Lorna McPherson of Guyana, who co-authored the Caribbean Advanced !7

Proficiency Examination Biology syllabus spoke of humanity as a continuum all made by God and all valuable in God’s sight. One of the matters discussed and that came out in the communiqué was that where there is a conflict in matters of religion, philosophy, psychology, law, and human rights principles, it should be ensured that human rights is given consideration if not priority. There will indeed be ethical and moral issues to be examined; but what must be primary theologically is that when we say that the Word be came flesh; we have to assume that the Word became incarnate in all humanity. For Church as the divine society there must be the opportunity to incorporate the theological notion that ‘all human beings are made in the image of God’ and that ‘God Almighty dwells within all of us’. An important role for the servant church is the need for the Religious Community to create spaces of hospitality that bring disparate groups together and create the basis for healing, compassion, love, and inclusion. We as christians do not have all the answers; but that does not stop us from loving the neighbour as the self as our Lord bids us in Sacred Scripture. (Mark 12:31). May God almighty give us grace to see his face in each other’s story. Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, (The Rev’d Canon) Rector

DAVID’S DAY According to tradition, St. David was the son of King Sant of South Wales and St. Non. He was ordained a priest and later studied under St. Paulinus. Later, he was involved in missionary work and founded a number of monasteries. The monastery he founded at Menevia in Southwestern Wales was noted for extreme asceticism. His contributions at the synod are said to have been the major cause for his election as primate of the Cambrian Church. He was reportedly consecrated archbishop by the patriarch of Jerusalem while on a visit to the Holy Land. He also is said to have invoked a council that ended the last vestiges of Pelagianism. David died at his monastery in Menevia around the year 589, and his cult was approved in 1120 by Pope Callistus II. He is revered as the patron of Wales. His Feast day is Thursday March 1, 2018. Holy Mass at 7:30pm. All organizations are asked to attend in their respective uniforms. HEALTH CORNER: By Sophia Marshall, Ph.D INTERESTING FOOD FACTS AND HISTORY CUBE-SHAPED MELONS Having a problem with storing those watermelons in the refrigerator? Well then buy the cube shaped ones. Japanese farmers have discovered a way of growing melons in glass boxes to obtain a cube shape. There have also created melons shaped as hearts, pyramids, triangles and face. If you plan to buy one, remember to walk with your cheque book. It can cost as much as US$120 for one of these creations. DID YOU SAY PURPLE CARROTS? Did you know that purple carrots were the norm? There were also white, yellow, red and black varieties. Prior to the 17th Century, almost all carrots were yellow, white or purple. The white and yellow ones grew wildly. Some historians suggest that Dutch farmers experimented and cultivated orange carrots as a tribute to William of Orange, who led the struggle for Dutch independence. FISH IN MY SAUCE Traditional Worcestershire sauce was made from dissolved fish along with other ingredients. Anchovies, small shiny silver fish, are soaked in vinegar until they have completely dissolved. Some brands of Worcestershire sauces are now made with artificial flavour as a replacement for anchovies. Those brands containing anchovies are recommended by Codex Alimentarius to have a warning of fish content on the label. KETCHUP AS MEDICINE In 1834, Dr. John Cook Bennett from Ohio, published recipes for tomato ketchup and declared that it was a treatment for diarrhoea and indigestion. It was concentrated into a pill and sold as a patent medicine. PASTRY FOR LENT In the 16th century, the German tradition of eating pretzels during Good Friday dinner, was introduced. The shape of these pastries was to symbolise crossed hands in prayer. They became associated with Lent because European Christians were forbidden to eat eggs, lard or dairy products during this period. Pretzels were made of only flour and water.
