THE FIRST READING: READER:

A Reading from the Word of God written in the book of Numbers Chapter 21 beginning at the 4th verse.

From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom; but the people became impatient on the way. The people spoke against God and against Moses, "Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness?

For there is no food and no water, and we detest this miserable food.� Then the LORD sent poisonous serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many Israelites died. The people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned by speaking against the LORD and against you; pray to the LORD to take away the serpents from us." So Moses prayed for the people.

And the LORD said to Moses, "Make a poisonous serpent, and set it on a pole; and everyone who is bitten shall look at it and live.� So Moses made a serpent of bronze, and put it upon a pole; and whenever a serpent bit someone, that person would look at the serpent of bronze and live.

THE EPISTLE READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in Paul’s first letter to the Ephesians Chapter 2 beginning at the 1st verse

You were dead through the trespasses and sins in which you once lived, following the course of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work among those who are disobedient. All of us once lived among them in the passions of our flesh, following the desires of flesh and senses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like everyone else. But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ--by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God— not the result of works, so that no one may boast. Jesus answered Nicodemus: And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.

"Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Those who believe in him are not condemned; but those who do not believe are condemned already, because they have not believed in the name of the only Son of God. And this is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than light because their deeds were evil.

For all who do evil hate the light and do not come to the light, so that their deeds may not be exposed. But those who do what is true come to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that their deeds have been done in God."

psalm texts and the readings selected for the Mass of the day.

The events to take place during the week are also highlighted long with current events in the lives of our members, we are also reminded of events taking place in the community and important national and civic occasions.

We must also pay attention to the fact that the health of members of the congregation is also given much attention.

Mention is always made of the once monthly brisk morning walk hosted by the members of the Health Guild.

That monthly event is a reminder that according to the World Health Organisation (WHO) we are required to be engaged in twenty to thirty minutes of physical activity at least three days each week.

The WHO states that regular moderate physical activity – such as walking, cycling, or participating in sports – has significant benefits for health. Even those with poor mobility can still be engaged in some form of physical activity That organization goes on to say that physical activity can reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, colon and breast cancer, and depression.

Notices are often given that relates to talks and presentations on health matters. When such events are announced we must ensure to be present in good number, to demonstrate that we appreciate the time of your guests, we are good hosts and that we are interested in learning. !7

Taking up a full page in the bulletin each week is the Health Corner, prepared and presented by Sophia Marshall, Ph.D and which includes advice on diet, exercise and a whole range of health matters that pertain to us all.

Dr. Kenneth S. George The Acting Chief Medical Officer has made the point in the Health of the Nation Findings that in Barbados, noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) have become the major cause of illness and death.

We have to take responsibility for our health and while there are conditions that seem outside of our control with a little effort and maybe some sacrifice we can make a difference in our physical wellbeing.

God almighty cares for us body and soul and this is demonstrated in the healing acts of Christ in the Gospel tradition.

Take your bulletin home each week and read it well in order that we may see how we are implicated in the text of this church document.

HEALTH CORNER: By Sophia Marshall, Ph.D CHOLESTEROL The last time you visited the doctor, you were told that your cholesterol was high. Do you really understand what this means? What is cholesterol? Let’s take a look together.

Cholesterol is a waxy material that is produced naturally by the liver. However, we also consume it through animal products such as meats, eggs and milk products. It protects the nerves, produces hormones and makes cell tissues. Your body makes what it needs; therefore there is no recommended intake for cholesterol.

Types of Cholesterol There are two kinds of cholesterol –Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) Cholesterol and High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) Cholesterol.

LDL Cholesterol is the ‘bad’ type because if too much circulates in the blood, thick deposits known as plaque can build up in the blood vessels.

This leads to a narrowing of the arteries, and an eventual decrease in the amount of blood and oxygen going to the heart. This can result in heart disease and heart attacks. Photo taken from http://elitemensguide.com HDL Cholesterol is the ‘good’ fellow because it assists in removing LDL from the arteries and to the liver where it is broken down and disposed from the body. Research has shown that there is a link between low levels of HDL and increased risk of heart disease.

When you have a blood test done, the levels of HDL and LDL cholesterol are measured. According to the American Heart Association, you are at risk of high cholesterol if your levels of LDL are greater than 200mg/dL or HDL is less than 40 mg/dL. You are borderline risk of high cholesterol if your level of HDL falls in the range 200-239mg/dL. You have high cholesterol if your LDL level is greater than 240mg/dL. Next time you visit the doctor, make note of your levels! *mg/dL means milligrams in a deciliter of blood !10
