THE COLLECT Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE FIRST READING: READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Isaiah chapter 40 beginning at the 1st verse Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that her warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received from the LORD's hand double for all her sins. A voice cries: "In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. And the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken." A voice says, "Cry!" And I said, "What shall I cry?" All flesh is grass, and all its beauty is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the LORD blows upon it; surely the people is grass. The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand for ever. Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, fear not; say to the cities of Judah, "Behold your God!" Behold, the Lord GOD comes with might, and his arm rules for him; behold, his reward is with him,

and his recompense before him. He will feed his flock like a shepherd, he will gather the lambs in his arms, he will carry them in his bosom, and gently lead those that are with young. Reader: ALL:

Here ends the Reading. Thanks be to God.

PSALM 85 Benedixisti, Domine. 1.You have been gracious to your land, O Lord, * you have restored the good fortune of Jacob. 2.You have forgiven the iniquity of your people* and blotted out all their sins. 3.You have withdrawn all your fury* and turned yourself from your wrathful indignation. 4.Restore us then, O God our Saviour;* let your anger depart from us. 5.Will you be displeased with us for ever? * will you prolong your anger from age to age? 6.Will you not give us life again, * that your people may rejoice in you? 7.Show us your mercy, O Lord, * and grant us your salvation. 8.I will listen to what the Lord God is saying, * for he is speaking peace to his faithful people and to those who turn their hearts to him. 9.Truly, his salvation is very near to those who fear him, * that his glory may

dwell in our land. 10.Mercy and truth have met together; * and righteousness and peace have kissed each other. 11.Truth shall spring up from the earth, * and righteousness
shall look down from heaven. 12.The Lord will indeed grant prosperity, * and our land will
yield its increase. 13. Righteousness shall go before him, * and peace shall be a pathway for his feet. Glory to the Father, and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now* and shall be forever. Amen. THE EPISTLE A Reading from the Word of God written in the Second Letter of Peter chapter 3 beginning at the 8th verse. Do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow about his promise as some count slowness, but is forbearing toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and the works that are upon it will be burned up. Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of persons ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be kindled and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire! But according to his promise we wait for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.

!5

Therefore, beloved, since you wait for these, be zealous to be found by him without spot or blemish, and at peace. And count the forbearance of our Lord as salvation. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen. Reader: ALL:

Here ends the Reading. Thanks be to God. THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark Glory to Christ our Saviour.

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet, "Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, who shall prepare thy way; the voice of one crying in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight -- " John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And there went out to him all the country of Judea, and all the people of Jerusalem; and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel's hair, and had a leather girdle around his waist, and ate locusts and wild honey. And he preached, saying, "After me comes he who is mightier than I, the thong of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." The Gospel of Christ. Praise to Christ our Lord. From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings: One of the deeply spiritual and theological words of the christian tradition is hope. Michael Morissey tells us that hope is the universal human experience that orients us to the future.

!6

He goes on to say that that hope is directed not only toward the things of this world; but more importantly toward the world beyond. We express this hope in the sacred liturgy when ever we come to Mass as we say May he make us a perpetual offering to you and enable us in communion with blessed Mary and the whole company of heaven to share in the inheritance of your saints. Excerpt: Eucharistic Prayer B It is our duty as Christians to pay close attention to the words and actions of the liturgy, especially as we follow the dictum used by Prosper of Aquitaine, lex orandi lex credendi which according to Professor Kevin Irwin literally translates “The law of prayer is the law of belief. Our faith is connected to our worship and prayer as we live out the Gospel that we hold dear. The word hope is mentioned no less than fortyeight times in the New Testament and is one of the three theological virtues. It relates to faith and love. Paul the Apostle tells us in 1st Corinthians 13 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. So faith, hope, love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13: 7; 13) Our lives are built on the hope placed in us by Christ so that whatever we face we do so boldly.

!7

This boldness and courage is required of us in two ways, firstly as we recognise that Advent brings us to the start of a new church year and we know not what the year will bring forth. Secondly as a nation we continue to feel the effects of a very trying economic situation. In the midst of all, we do not lose heart; but we make every attempt systematically and with deep faith to press onward. This Advent may the God of Hope again give us Joy and Peace in believing.(Romans 15:13) Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector CURRENT NEWS AND EVENTS CONGRATULATIONS Retired University Professor and former Dean of the Faculty of Medical Sciences at UWI Cave Hill, Senator Henry Fraser is Barbados’ newest Knight. HEALTH CORNER EATING HEALTHY WHILE EATING OUT The festive Christmas season is almost here and there will be lots of social events with friends, family and work colleagues. Here are a few tips to help you to make healthy food choices and reduce your caloric intake. (1) Ask for butter, cream cheese, salad dressings, sauces and gravies to be served on the side, so you can control the quantity you consume. (2) Instead of fried meat or fish, select baked, broiled or grilled options. (3) Choose desserts carefully. Fresh fruit, fruit ice, sorbet, gelatin are good alternatives to more traditional fat- and cream-laden desserts. Use fat-free or 1% milk in coffee instead of cream or half-and-half. (4) Skip high-fat toppings such as bacon bits, cheese and croutons. They can add hundreds of calories to your meal. (5) Ask for water or order fat-free or low-fat milk, unsweetened tea, or other drinks without added sugars. If you choose to drink alcoholic beverages, select options with fewer calories. One large Margarita cocktail is nearly 600 calories. (6) Listen to your stomach, eat slowly and stop when you are full. (7) Don’t arrive at the function hungry. About 1-2 hours before eating, have a small, healthy snack (apple, small salad) to avoid pre-meal munching later.
