THE COLLECT ! Purify our conscience, Almighty God, by your daily visitation, that your Son Jesus Christ, at his coming, may find in us a mansion prepared for himself; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen! ! THE FIRST READING:!

READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the ! Book of the Prophet Isaiah chapter 7 beginning at the 10th verse!

!

Again the LORD spoke to Ahaz, "Ask a sign of the LORD your God; let it be deep as Sheol or high as heaven." But Ahaz said, "I will not ask, and I will not put the LORD to the test." And he said, "Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary men, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, a young woman shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Imman'u-el. He shall eat curds and honey when he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. For before the child knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land before whose two kings you are in dread will be deserted. The LORD will bring upon you and upon your people and upon your father's house such days

as have not come since the day that E'phraim departed from Judah -- the king of Assyria.”!

Psalm 24 Domini est terra!

1 The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, * the world and all who dwell therein. 2 For it is he who founded it upon the seas * and made it firm upon the rivers of the deep. 3 “Who can ascend the hill of the Lord? * and who can stand in his holy place?” 4 “Those who have clean hands and a pure heart, * who have not pledged themselves to falsehood, nor sworn by what is a fraud. 5 They shall receive a blessing from the Lord * and a just reward from the God of their salvation." 6 Such is the generation of those who seek him, * of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob. 7 Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors; * and the King of glory shall come in. 8 “Who is this King of glory?” * “The Lord, strong and mighty, the Lord, mighty in battle.” 9 Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors; * and the King of glory shall come in. 10 “Who is he, this King of glory?” * “The Lord of hosts, !4

he is the King of glory.” Glory to the Father, and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit;! As it was in the beginning is now* and shall be forever. Amen.!

Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures, the gospel concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and designated Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, including yourselves who are called to belong to Jesus Christ; To all God's beloved in Rome, who are called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.! ! THE HOLY GOSPEL! Gospeller: A Reading from the Holy Gospel ! according to Matthew! ALL: Glory to Christ our Saviour.!

!

Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit; and her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit; she will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: "Behold, a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be called Emmanuel (which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took his wife, but knew her not until she had borne a son; and he called his name Jesus.!  ! From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings:

!

Today being the 4th Sunday of Advent means that we have virtually come to the end of this short period of preparation for the coming of our Saviour.

!

On Wednesday of this week we shall celebrate, God willing, the Feast of the Nativity of Christ Christmas Day.

!

The services for Christmas and at New Year give us that opportunity to renew our relationship with God and continue our walk with him who has called us out of darkness into his marvelous light.

!

At Christmas time we give thanks to God for revealing himself to a humble couple in Nazareth just over 2, 000 years ago.

!

The call of St. Joseph and the Blessed Virgin Mary brought to them bewilderment, expectation and joy.

!

They were living in very difficult circumstances in their village wondering from time to time when would the promised Messiah of Jewish hope appear. they wondered who would deliver them from the overwhelming military and economic might of Rome.

!

In the midst of this God almighty broke though the misery and in its place he positioned angels, angelic choirs the brightness of the heavens as manifested by the light of a star.

!

!7

God brought together Angels and mortals and indeed the entire created order to herald the birth of the Saviour of the world.

!

As Christians we never subscribe to gloom and doom what ever the situation. There have been times during the past year when we laid loved ones to rest and wondered if we would ever get past the grief, emptiness and pain that we experienced at such times.

!

This Christmas we are much aware that there will be an empty chair where a loved one sat last christmas.

!

In our national life we are indeed facing the reality of difficult economic times.

!

We have heard of the hard decisions that have to be made in order to keep our country going and we continue to lift up people and families before God with the hope that we will be all able to pass through these measurers with minimal harm to family life.

!

The Christmas hope is to know that as Paul the Apostle says, God always provides the way out. (i Corinthians 10:13)

!

Our Christian perspective is that the empty chair mentioned above may mean for us the place where Jesus will sit at table with us this Christmas.

!

Let us eat and drink responsibly, use the roads with great care and enjoy the glorious Feast of the Nativity of our Lord.

!

Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector
