THE FIRST READING: READER:

A Reading from the Word of God written in the book of Isaiah Chapter 40 beginning at the 1st verse. Comfort, O comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that her penalty is paid, that she has received from the Lord's hand double for all her sins. A voice cries out: "In the wilderness prepare the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. Then the glory of the LORD shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the LORD has spoken. A voice says, "Cry out!" And I said, "What shall I cry?" All people are grass, their constancy is like the flower of the field. The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the LORD blows upon it; surely the people are grass. The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand forever. Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of Judah, "Here is your God! See, the Lord GOD comes with might, and his arm rules for him; his reward is with him, and his recompense before him. He will feed his flock like a shepherd; he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep. Reader: ALL:

THE EPISTLE READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in 2nd Peter Chapter 3 beginning at the 8th verse

But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. The Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed. Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire? But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home. Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish; and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. So also our beloved brother Paul wrote to you according to the wisdom given him. Reader: ALL:

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark Glory to Christ our Saviour. The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, "See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your !5

way; the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight,’" John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, "The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord From The Rector’s Notebook Greetings: It was once again a joy and delight to see those persons who had previously been baptized kneel before the bishop for the hand-laying rite of Holy Confirmation. These persons then went on to receive the sacrament of Holy Communion for the first time. Eleven persons on Thursday December 7 (The Feast of St. Ambrose) knelt before His Grace the Archbishop of the West Indies The Most Rev’d Dr. !6

John W.D. Holder, CBE, DD, here in the St. David’s Church and renewed their pledged to a lifelong commitment to serving God in within His holy Church. Ten of these persons were drawn from among the youth in our congregation and our experience and social context tell us that it will not always be easy for them as they live their faith in Christ. They will need our prayers, kind words and gestures as they make their way in this amazing journey of Christian living. When Paul the Apostle reflected on the long journey of his life in Christ he described it using the Greek word καλός (pronounced kalos) which is translated as “good” I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 2 Timothy 4:7 According to A Greek-English Lexicon of The New Testament and Other Early Christian Literature by William Arndt and F. Wilbur Gingrich (Second edition) this term would describe a path that is good, precious, beautiful, commendable, excellent and honourable. The word is sacramental in nature in that it speaks to beauty as an outward sign of an inward good, noble or honourable character. This must be our prayer for all the newly Confirmed so that in the highs and lows of life they will be reminded that God is always present, ever merciful and abides with us in His Holy Word and in the Blessed Sacrament. !7

The newly Confirmed used the opportunity to present to the Archbishop a cheque with the proceeds from the carwash that was held in September of this year. The funds are earmarked for the Diocese of the North Eastern Caribbean and Aruba within which the island of Dominica is located. The Archbishop thanked these young Christians for their thoughtfulness and charity and gave the assurance that he would inform Bishop Errol Brooks of the special nature of the donation. For those who have received the laying-on-of Hand sand can now make their communion and have become as a result of instruction strong servants of Christ we remind you of the words of the final hymn of the Confirmation Rite :Then, on to the fight ’gainst sin and the world! stand fast in his strength, his banner unfurled; and, sealed by the spirit of wisdom and might, go forward, Christ’s soldiers, go forward and fight! Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector

HEALTH CORNER BY SOPHIA MARSHALL, Ph.d

" HAVE A GLASS OF HOMEMADE SORREL! This is the time of year when sorrel is plentiful! Have you ever thought of what sorrel is or its benefits? The sorrel plant is a member of the hibiscus family, which is why it is often incorrectly thought to be the same plant as the hibiscus flower; it is also sometimes referred to as “red sorrel” or roselle. The bright red fruit is rich in powerful antioxidants, which eliminates free radicals that can cause deadly diseases if they are not removed from the body. This fruit is used to make the delicious cold drink that we enjoy! However in many countries such as the Sudan, Senegal and Egypt, they prefer to have hot sorrel tea. Scientists from the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) claimed that ‘sorrel water’ significantly decreases cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood and contributes to protection against heart diseases. Did you know that the young leaves and tender shoots of the sorrel plant are edible? They contain a wide range of vitamins and minerals. They can be eaten raw in salads or cooked as greens either on their own, or with other leafy vegetables and meat. In India, the leaves which have a sour/tart taste are often used to make chutneys or as a leaf vegetable in curries. Make your own sorrel drink and enjoy it while reaping the nutritional benefits! !10
