READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of the Prophet Malachi Chapter 3 beginning at the 1st verse
See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me, and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the covenant in whom you delight--indeed, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts. But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the LORD in righteousness. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the LORD as in the days of old and as in former years. Reader: ALL:

The Song of Zechariah -
Benedictus Dominus Deus Luke 1: 68-79
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; * he has come to his people and set them free. He has raised up for us a mighty savior, * born of the house of his servant David. Through his holy prophets he promised of old, that he would save us from our enemies, * from the hands of all who hate us. He promised to show mercy to our fathers * and to remember his holy covenant. This was the oath he swore to our father Abraham, * to set us free from the hands of our enemies, Free to worship him without fear, * holy and righteous in his sight all the days of our life. You, my child, shall be called the prophet of the Most High, * for you will go before the Lord to prepare his way, To give his people knowledge of salvation * by the forgiveness of their sins. In the tender compassion of our God * the dawn from on high shall break upon us, To shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, * and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Glory to the Father, and to the Son * and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now * and shall be forever. Amen

THE EPISTLE
READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in Paul’s letter to the Philippians Chapter 1 beginning at the 3rd verse I thank my God every time I remember you, constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel from the first day until now. I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ. It is right for me to think this way about all of you, because you hold me in your heart, for all of you share in God's grace with me, both in my imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel. For God is my witness, how I long for all of you with the compassion of Christ Jesus. And this is my prayer, that your love may overflow more and more with knowledge and full insight to help you to determine what is best, so that in the day of Christ you may be pure and blameless, having produced the harvest of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God. THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to LUKE Glory to Christ our Saviour. In the fifteenth year of the reign of Emperor Tiberius,
when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was ruler of Galilee, and his brother Philip !5
ruler of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias ruler of Abilene, during the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness. He went into all the region around the Jordan, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins, as it is written in the book of the words of the prophet Isaiah, "The voice of one crying out in the wilderness: 'Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low, and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth; and all flesh shall see the salvation of God.'" From the Rector's Notebook Greetings: In the Intercession last Sunday one of our Lay Liturgical Ministers on leading the intercession appropriately remembered the late President of the United States, George H. W. Bush among others. This was appropriate for two reasons, firstly leading the intercession implies that one is up to date on national, regional and international affairs so that one can adequately bring before the assembled people of God the matters that must come to our spiritual consciences. Secondly the late president was an Episcopalian, that is, a faithful member of the Episcopal Church (In the United States the Anglican Church is known as the Episcopal Church). What impressed regarding President Bush’s last moments according to Chief White House Correspondent for the New York Times, Peter Baker was that among those present was the Rev. Dr. Russell J. Levenson Jr., Rector of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Houston, who would have administered the final or last rites. During the season of Advent one of the features reflected on are the traditional four last things: death, judgement, heaven and hell. We really do not hear a lot about the four last things and there maybe many reasons for this. Primarily we may be spending so much time dealing with the things of the present that the eternal future becomes blurred. Indeed, however, life is teleological, meaning that in a sense our end !7
is always in view no matter how much one may not reflect on it. Of course the goal of every human being ought to be Heaven; though I am guessing that those reading this article may not be excited about going there today; yet there is the realization that natural death is a part of life. This is not meant to make us morbid; but Advent does remind of us the important messages that Jesus always brought as part of his teaching on the Kingdom of God. Perhaps this prayer of St. Augustine can help us during this season of Advent Remember, Christian soul, that thou hast this day, and every day of thy life: God to glorify; Jesus to imitate. A soul to save; A body to mortify. Sins to repent of; Virtues to acquire. Hell to avoid; Heaven to gain. Eternity to prepare for; Time to profit by. Neighbors to edify; The world to despise. Devils to combat; Passions to subdue. Death, perhaps, to suffer; Judgment to undergo. -St. Augustine of Hippo May God continue to bless us this Advent. Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev'd Canon) Rector

HEALTH CORNER: By SOPHIA MARSHALL, Ph.d EATING HEALTHY WHILE EATING OUT The festive Christmas season is almost here and there will be lots of social events with friends, family and work colleagues. Here are a few tips to help you to make healthy food choices and reduce your caloric intake. 1. Ask for butter, cream cheese, salad dressings, sauces and gravies to be served on the side, so you can control the quantity you consume. 2. Instead of fried meat or fish, select baked, broiled or grilled options. 3. Choose desserts carefully. Fresh fruit, fruit ice, sorbet, gelatin are good alternatives to more traditional fatand cream-laden desserts. Use fat-free or 1% milk in coffee instead of cream or half-and-half. 4. Skip high-fat toppings such as bacon bits, cheese and croutons. They can add hundreds of calories to your meal. 5. Ask for water or order fat-free or low-fat milk, unsweetened tea, or other drinks without added sugars. If you choose to drink alcoholic beverages, select options with fewer calories. One large Margarita cocktail is nearly 600 calories vs one rum and coke which is 200 calories. 6. Listen to your stomach, eat slowly and stop when you are full. 7. Don’t arrive at the function hungry. About 1-2 hours before eating, have a small, healthy snack (apple, small salad) to avoid pre-meal munching later. !9
