A Reading from the Word of God written in the book of Isaiah Chapter 61 beginning at the 1st verse.
The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners; to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn; to provide for those who mourn in Zion-- to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. They will be called oaks of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, to display his glory. They shall build up the ancient ruins, they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. For I the LORD love justice, I hate robbery and wrongdoing; I will faithfully give them their recompense, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. Their descendants shall be known among the nations, and their offspring among the peoples; all who see them shall acknowledge that they are a people whom the LORD has blessed. I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. For as the earth brings forth its shoots, and as a garden causes what is !3
sown in it to spring up, so the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring up before all the nations. Reader: ALL:

THE EPISTLE READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in 1st Thessalonians Chapter 5 beginning at the 16th verse
Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise the words of prophets, but test everything; hold fast to what is good; abstain from every form of evil. May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do this. Reader: ALL:

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John Glory to Christ our Saviour. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him. He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light. This is the testimony given by John when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?” He confessed and did not deny it, but confessed, "I am not the Messiah.” And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the prophet?" He answered, “No." Then they said to him, "Who are you? Let us have an answer for those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?” He !5
said, "I am the voice of one crying out in the wilderness, 'Make straight the way of the Lord,'" as the prophet Isaiah said. Now they had been sent from the Pharisees. They asked him, "Why then are you baptizing if you are neither the Messiah, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?” John answered them, "I baptize with water. Among you stands one whom you do not know, the one who is coming after me; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandal.” This took place in Bethany across the Jordan where John was baptizing. The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord From The Rector’s Notebook Greetings: Approximately one month ago I was in Boston Massachusetts, USA attending the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Religion (AAR) and the Annual Meeting of the Society for the Study of Christian Spirituality (SSCS). It was an occasion to hear Pieter G.R. De Villiers Prof. Dr. at U.F. University of the Free State Stellenbosch University Cape Town Area, South Africa speak on the topic “Biblical Spirituality, Aesthetics and Beauty: The Case of John’s Revelation”. Professor de Villiers made obvious reference to “end-time”. A time when war will be gone and nations enter the new Jerusalem. He spoke of the vision of peace; but until that time the church is engaged in prayerful liturgy before the throne of God. !6
Advent lends itself to that kind of visioning where the church offers true and laudable worship even in the context of the world’s scramble for money, power and land. We as members of the one, holy, catholic and apostolic church continue to uphold in liturgical prayer the awe and wonder of the beatific vision of God and that image must never be lost. In the midst of wars and threats of wars, the various refugee crises, the xenophobia of rich and powerful countries, the blacklisting and alienation of less powerful nations, the Advent Season speaks to us still of a joy which the Christ child brings to the world. In the midst of the many challenges faced by humanity, Christians can still sing hymn 73 CPWI Hymnal “Joy to the world”. For we uphold the self-evident truth that God always has the final say and this is stated powerfully in the final verse of the above mentioned hymn:He rules the earth with truth and grace, and makes the nations prove the glories of his righteousness and wonders of his love and wonders of his love and wonders, and wonders of his love Fred B Craddock reminds us of an Emperor by the name of Octavius so important was he that the 8th month of the year is named after him.
!7
He was declared by the Roman Senate to be "Caesar Augustus”. He called for a census that brought Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem. Little did he know that he was an unwitting player in YAHWEH’s eternal plan and that his action would cause the theological fulfillment of a prophet who lived in the 8th century BC “But you, O Bethlehem of Ephrathah, who are one of the little clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to rule in Israel,” Micah 5:2 God can and does use any one of us for his divine purpose and it is important to remember this. Once again on this Advent Sunday of joy we celebrate the fact that we are all made in the likeness of God. God comes to dwell in all of us, both the powerful and the powerless. This is a cause of joy for both the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Elizabeth. (Luke 1: 41-44) May God almighty fill us with joy as we prepare to celebrate the Nativity of the King of kings and Lord of lords and may his kingdom come and his will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector
