THE FIRST READING:
READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of the Prophet Zephaniah Chapter 3 beginning at the 14th verse Sing aloud, O daughter Zion; shout, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem! The LORD has taken away the judgments against you, he has turned away your enemies. The king of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst; you shall fear disaster no more. On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands grow weak. The LORD, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing as on a day of festival. I will remove disaster from you, so that you will not bear reproach for it. I will deal with all your oppressors at that time. And I will save the lame and gather the outcast, and I will change their shame into praise and renown in all the earth. At that time I will bring you home, at the time when I gather you; for I will make you renowned and praised among all the peoples of the earth, when I restore your fortunes before your eyes, says the LORD.ays of old and as in former years. The First Song of Isaiah - Ecce Deus: Isaiah 12:1-7 1. Surely, it is God who saves me; * I will trust and not be afraid. 2. For the Lord is my stronghold and my sure defense, * and He will be my Savior. 3. Therefore you shall draw water with rejoicing * from the springs of salvation 4. And on that day you shall say, * Give thanks to the Lord and call upon God’s name.” 5. Make God’s deeds known among the peoples; * see that they remember that his name is exalted. 6. Sing the praises of the Lord, for He has done great things * and this is known in all the world. 7. Cry aloud, inhabitants of Zion; ring out your joy, * for the great one in the midst of you is the Holy One of Israel. Glory to the Father, and to the Son * and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning is now * and shall be forever. Amen REQUIESCAT IN PACE We pray for the soul of the late Lucy Andrea Adele Gollop-Greenidge who died during the past week. We offer prayers for the Gollop and Greenidge families as they mourn her loss. !4

Let your gentleness be known to everyone. The Lord is near. Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.of God. Reader: ALL:

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to LUKE Glory to Christ our Saviour. John said to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our ancestor'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. Even now the axe is lying at the root of the trees; every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.” And the crowds asked him, "What then should we do?” In reply he said to them, "Whoever has two coats must share with anyone who has none; and whoever has food must do likewise.” Even tax collectors came to be baptised, and they asked him, "Teacher, what should we do?” He said to them, "Collect no more than the amount prescribed for you.” Soldiers also asked him, "And we, !5
what should we do?" He said to them, "Do not extort money from anyone by threats or false accusation, and be satisfied with your wages.” As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah, John answered all of them by saying, "I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” So, with many other exhortations, he proclaimed the good news to the people.

From the Rector's Notebook Greetings: Stir up your power O Lord The collect for the Third Sunday of Advent leaves us with no doubt that the Christmas Season is coming soon. We in Barbados are certainly accustomed to parents and grandparents stirring up the flour, the mixed peel, the currants, raisins and that local brew for which our nation is well known so as to make the Christmas Cake that will serve as dessert after lunch on Christmas Day. The opening words of the collect are actually a reflection or repetition of Psalm 80: Before Ephraim and Benjamin and Manasseh stir up thy strength, and come and save us. Turn us again, O God, and cause thy face to shine; and we shall be saved. Psalm 80: 2- 3 Professor Patrick Regan tells us that Advent is a period of time dedicated to preparing faithful Christians for the liturgical celebration of Jesus’ birth at Bethlehem. Christmas Day and the eleven days following are best understood as a time of celebration for our redemption. It is more than the story of a young mother and a doubtful father watching over a baby in a manger over two thousand years ago; even though the image occurs across the world on a daily basis.

Christmas is seen theologically as the Christ who is born anew to us day by day engendering in us love, compassion and righteousness. It is when we carry this outlook that we realize that we are not at all celebrating Jesus’ birthday as some persons seem to think; but rather we are giving thanks for the joy of the paschal mystery. In the midst of the most bitter struggle, whether it is joblessness, concerns about our health, grief or the behaviour of a loved one, Advent can bring us a certain joy that is born of the Holy Spirit. This joy is contagious and we must allow it to spread across our congregation, the community and into our work spaces. We pray that whatever our condition maybe this Christmas, that the joy of knowing Christ will be ours. Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev'd Canon) Rector

HAVE A GLASS OF HOMEMADE SORREL!
This is the time of year when sorrel is plentiful. Have you ever thought of what sorrel is or its benefits? The sorrel plant is a member of the hibiscus family, which is why it is often incorrectly thought to be the same plant as the hibiscus flower; it is also sometimes referred to as “red sorrel” or roselle. The bright red fruit is rich in powerful antioxidants, which eliminates free radicals that can cause deadly diseases if they are not removed from the body. This fruit is used to make the delicious cold drink that we enjoy. However in many countries such as the Sudan, Senegal and Egypt, they prefer to have hot sorrel tea. Scientists from the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) proved that ‘sorrel water’ significantly decreases cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood and contributes to protection against heart diseases. Did you know that the young leaves and tender shoots of the sorrel plant are edible? They contain a wide range of vitamins and minerals. They can be eaten raw in salads or cooked as greens either on their own, or with other leafy vegetables and meat. In India, the leaves which have a sour/tart taste are often used to make chutneys or as a leaf vegetable in curries. Make your own sorrel drink and enjoy it while reaping the nutritional benefits!
