THE COLLECT Purify our conscience, Almighty God, by your daily visitation, that your Son Jesus Christ, at His coming, may find in us a mansion prepared for Himself; who lives and reigns with you, in
the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

THE FIRST READING: READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the Second Book of Samuel chapter 7 beginning at the 4th verse That same night the word of the LORD came to Nathan. “Now therefore thus you shall say to my servant David, `Thus says the LORD of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people Israel; and I have been with you wherever you went, and have cut off all your enemies from before you; and I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth.
And I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place, and be disturbed no more; and violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel; and I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover the LORD declares to you that the LORD will make you a house. When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come forth from your body, and I will establish his

kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever. I will be his father, and he shall be my son. When he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men; but I will not take my steadfast love from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure for ever before me; your throne shall be established for ever.'" Reader: ALL:

PSALM 132: 8-15

8

Arise, 0 Lord, into your restingplace, * you and the ark of
 your strength.

9

Let your priests be clothed with righteousness;* let your
 faithful people sing with joy.

10

For your servant David's sake, * do not turn away the face
 of your anointed.

11

The Lord has sworn an oath to David; * in truth, he will not
 break it:

12

"A son, the fruit of your body* will I set upon your throne.

13

If your children keep my covenant timonies that I shall teach them, * their children will sit upon your throne for evermore."

14.For the Lord has chosen Zion, * he has desired her for his
habitation: 15."This shall be my resting-place for ever;* here will I dwell,
for I delight in her. Glory to the Father, and to the Son* and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now* and shall be forever. Amen. THE EPISTLE A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter of Paul to the Romans chapter 16 beginning at the 25th verse. Now to him who is able to strengthen you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which was kept secret for long ages but is now disclosed and through the prophetic writings is made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith -- to the only wise God be glory for evermore through Jesus Christ! Amen. Reader: ALL:

Here ends the Reading. Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke Glory to Christ our Saviour. In the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And he came to her and said, "Hail, O favored one, the Lord is with you!" But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind !5

what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there will be no end." And Mary said to the angel, "How shall this be, since I have no husband?" And the angel said to her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you; therefore the child to be born will be called holy, the Son of God. And behold, your kinswoman Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son; and this is the sixth month with her who was called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible." And Mary said, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her. The Gospel of Christ. Praise to Christ our Lord. From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings: During the Advent season this year under the general spiritual theme of “waiting” we have been making an examination of some of the words and terms pertinent for this time of year as we contemplate the notion of Christ’s coming to us. With Christmas Day coming on Thursday of this week when we celebrate the birth of the Prince of peace, we turn our attention to a spiritual understanding of the element of peace in the Christian life.

!6

The Rev’d Canon Dr Kenneth Kearon recently elected Bishop of Limerick and Killaloe in the Church of Ireland, speaks of dividing the concept of peace into two or perhaps three types of peace. The ancient Roman used the Latin pax, which implies the absence of violence, conflict or war. Kearon is of the view that this is not popular in Christian thought, though it was the Pax Romana or Roman Peace positively considered that was the basis of prosperity and the expression of the rule of law and the flourishing of society which enabled the spread of the Christian Gospel in the Roman Empire. The simple absence of war is not often good; since this kind of peace can come about by unjust and inhumane ways as often done in military dictatorships. The second type of peace is derived from the Hebrew shalom which is dominant in christian thought and spirituality. It comes from a root which means ‘whole” and indicates well being along with spiritual and physical health and general sense of contentment. Shalom was a very broad Hebrew term which ultimately finds its source in GOD. It was the gift of Yahweh (Gen. 28:21; 41:16; Lev. 26:6; Jdg. 18:6; 1 Chron. 22:9). Those translating the Old Testament into Greek used eirene (εἰρήνη) to indicate shalom. Eirene is found 94 times in the NT. It is used often in the greetings of Paul’s letters to the churches

(Rom. 1:7; 1 Cor. 1:3; 2 Cor. 1:2; Gal. 1:3; Eph. 1:2; Col. 1:2; 1 Thess. 1:1; 2 Thess. 1:2; 1 Tim. 1:2; 2 Tim. 1:2; Titus 1:4; Philemon 1:3). Finally, Peace speaks of harmony between the self and God and with human beings as well. Peace takes place in the soul of the believer who applies the Word of God, which works in conjunction with the Spirit of God who influences, guides and empower the believer to do the will of the Father (Jn. 14:27; 16:33; Rm. 8:6; 14:17; 2 Co. 13;11; Phlp. 4:7; Col. 3:15; 1 Th. 5:23; 2 Th. 3:16; 2 Tm. 2:22; Heb. 13:20; Jam. 3:18). Jesus says blessed are the peace makers thus mandating that this is a state to be pursued. As we approach the Christmas season we pray for peace and reconciliation among all persons, that families be reunited and that in the sacred liturgy we will always be willing to take up the mandate to “go in peace and serve the Lord”. HEALTH CORNER HAVE A GLASS OF HOMEMADE SORREL! This is the time of year when sorrel is plentiful! Have you ever thought of what sorrel is or its benefits? The sorrel plant is a member of the hibiscus family, which is why it is often incorrectly thought to be the same plant as the hibiscus flower; it is also sometimes referred to as “red sorrel” or roselle. The bright red fruit is rich in powerful antioxidants, which eliminates free radicals that can cause deadly diseases if they are not removed from the body. This fruit is used to make the delicious cold drink that we enjoy! However in many countries such as the Sudan, Senegal and Egypt, they prefer to have hot sorrel tea. Scientists from the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) proved that ‘sorrel water’ significantly decreases cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood and contributes to protection against heart diseases. Did you know that the young leaves and tender shoots of the sorrel plant are edible? They contain a wide range of vitamins and minerals. They can be eaten raw in salads or cooked as greens either on their own, or with other leafy vegetables and meat. In India, the leaves which have a sour/tart taste are often used to make chutneys or as a leaf vegetable in curries. Make your own sorrel drink and enjoy it while reaping the nutritional benefits!
