THE COLLECT Almighty and everlasting God, you are always more ready to hear than we to pray, and to give more than we either desire or deserve: Pour upon us the abundance of your mercy, forgiving us those things of which our conscience is afraid, and giving us those good things for which we are not worthy to ask, except through the merits and mediation of Jesus Christ our Saviour; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

THE FIRST READING: READER:

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Isaiah Chapter 5 beginning at the 1st verse

Let me sing for my beloved a love song concerning his vineyard: My beloved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill. He digged it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with choice vines; he built a watchtower in the midst of it, and hewed out a wine vat in it; and he looked for it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes. And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah, judge, I pray you, between me and my vineyard. What more was there to do for my vineyard, that I have not done in it? When I looked for it to yield grapes, why did it yield wild grapes? And now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard. I will remove its hedge, and it shall be devoured; I will break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down. I will make it a waste; it shall not be pruned or hoed, and briers and thorns shall grow up; I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it. For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah are his pleasant planting; and he looked

for justice, but behold, bloodshed; for righteousness, but behold, a cry! Reader:: ALL:

Here ends the Reading. Thanks be to God.

PSALM 80: 7-14 7. Restore us, O God of hosts; * show the light of your countenance, and we shall be saved.

8. You have brought a vine out of Egypt;* you cast out the nations and planted it. 9.

You prepared the ground for it; * it took root and filled the land.

10.

The mountains were covered by its shadow* and the towering cedar trees by its boughs.

11.

You stretched out its tendrils to the Sea * and its branches to the River.

12.

Why have you broken down its wall, * so that all who pass by pluck off its grapes?

13.

The wild boar of the forest has ravaged it, * and the beasts of the field have grazed upon it.

14.

Turn now, O God of hosts, look down from heaven; behold and tend this vine; * preserve what your right hand has planted.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen

THE EPISTLE A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter to the Philippians Chapter 3 beginning at the 14th verse I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Let those of us who are mature be thus minded; and if in anything you are otherwise minded, God will reveal that also to you. Only let us hold true to what we have attained. Brethren, join in imitating me, and mark those who so live as you have an example in us. For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, live as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction, their god is the belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things. But our commonwealth is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will change our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power which enables him even to subject all things to himself. Reader: ALL:

Here ends the Reading. Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew Glory to Christ our Saviour. At that time Jesus said: "Hear another parable. There was a householder who planted a vineyard, and set a hedge around it, and dug a wine press in it, and built a tower, and let it out to tenants, and went into another country. When the season of fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants, to get his fruit; and the tenants took his servants and beat one, killed another, and stoned another. Again he sent other servants, more than the first; and they did the same to them. Afterward he sent his son to them, saying, `They will respect my son.' But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, `This is the heir; come, let us kill him

5

and have his inheritance.' And they took him and cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him. When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?" They said to him, "He will put those wretches to a miserable death, and let out the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the fruits in their seasons." Jesus said to them, "Have you never read in the scriptures: `The very stone which the builders rejected has become the head of the corner; this was the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes'? Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a nation producing the fruits of it." The Gospel of Christ. Praise to Christ our Lord.

FROM THE RECTOR’S NOTEBOOK Greetings: Our parish luncheon will be held next Sunday (October 12, 2014). This is one of the major fund raisers for this year. The parish luncheon is designed to bring necessary income for the ongoing work of the church and every member of the parish should see it as part of his/her responsibility to support it. While no doubt being a fundraiser, there are other important aspects to be considered.

6

This event to be held at the Sunbury Great House from 12:30pm – 3:30pm is an opportunity for families and friends to sit and eat at table together. In sacred scripture we see many examples of table fellowship. There is agreement among New Testament and liturgical scholars that while these may be symbolic references to the Eucharistic meal; there is still the reality of the social fellowship and closeness experienced in table sharing. From as far back as the book of Genesis this notion of meal sharing was considered to be extremely vital. When Joseph saw Benjamin with them, he said to the steward of his house, “Bring the men into the house, and slaughter an animal and make ready, for the men are to dine with me at noon.” Genesis 43:16 The timing here seems to correspond in a sense to our modern “luncheon,” though the hour may have varied according to rank and occupation. There is another aspect to this as well in that we tend to worship at varied times. This pattern can go on for years without persons necessarily knowing other worshippers. Though there are liturgical opportunities such as festival observances in which those with specific time patterns can worship together, the social events give us an opportunity for greater conversation.

7

Our parish luncheon is therefore valuable on many levels and we are being encouraged to be involved and engaged in this activity. Each member of the parish does the public relations and the media specialty, generally telling others about the church events. Purchase a ticket, sell a ticket, tell someone, come, sit and relax, eat (moderately) and enjoy the sumptuous meal next Sunday, God willing. May God almighty continue to bless our fellowship. Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, MA,(The Rev’d Canon) Rector ########################### CURRENT NEWS AND EVENTS LUNCHEON AT SUNBURY Tickets at $60.00 each are available for the Luncheon to be held on Sunday October 12th from 12:30pm - 3:30pm at the Sunbury Plantation House, St. Philip. Health Corner Honey is made from nectar and bee vomit. The Popsicle was invented by an 11-year old boy in 1905. Apples float in water, because 25% of their volume is air. Canola oil was originally called rapeseed oil but was renamed by the Canadian Oil Industry in 1978. “Canola” is short for “Canadian oil”. If not properly prepared, puffer fish can kill you since it contains a toxin which is 1,200 times deadlier than cyanide. Baby carrots are just adult carrots that have been shaved down to nubbins. Corn always has an even number or ears, usually 16. Eggplants are actually fruits and are classified botanically as berries. Avocado has the highest protein and oil content of all fruits but most of this is the healthier unsaturated type.
