THE COLLECT
Grant, O merciful God, that your Church, being gathered together in unity by your Holy Spirit, may show forth your power among all peoples, to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen THE FIRST READING: READER:
A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Isaiah Chapter 51 beginning at the 1stverse
"Hearken to me, you who pursue deliverance, you who seek the LORD; look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the quarry from which you were digged. Look to Abraham your father and to Sarah who bore you; for when he was but one I called him, and I blessed him and made him many. For the LORD will comfort Zion; he will comfort all her waste places, and will make her wilderness like Eden, her desert like the garden of the LORD; joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving and the voice of song."Listen to me, my people, and give ear to me, my nation; for a law will go forth from me, and my justice for a light to the peoples. My deliverance draws near speedily, my salvation has gone forth, and my arms will rule the peoples; the coastlands wait for me, and for my arm they hope. Lift up 3
your eyes to the heavens, and look at the earth beneath; for the heavens will vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment, and they who dwell in it will die like gnats; but my salvation will be for ever, and my deliverance will never be ended. Reader:: ALL:
Here ends the Reading. Thanks be to God.
PSALM 138 1.
I will give thanks to you, O Lord, with my whole heart;* before the gods I will sing your praise.
2.
I will bow down towards your holy temple and praise your name, * because of your love and faithfulness;
3.
For you have glorified your name* and your word above all things.
4.
When I called, you answered me; * you increased my strength within me.
5.
All the kings of the earth will praise you, O Lord, * when they have heard the words of your mouth.
6.
They will sing of the ways of the Lord, * that great is the glory of the Lord.
7.
Though the Lord be high, he cares for the lowly; * he perceives the haughty from afar.
8.
Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you keep me safe;* you stretch forth your hand against the fury of my enemies; your right hand shall save me.
9.
The Lord will make good his purpose for me; * O Lord, your love endures for ever; do not abandon the works of your hands.
4
Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen THE EPISTLE A Reading from the Word of God written in theLetter to the Romans Chapter 11 beginning at the 33rd verse
O the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! "For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?""Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?" For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory for ever. Amen. Reader: ALL:
Here ends the Reading. Thanks be to God. THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according toMatthew Glory to Christ our Saviour.
Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesare'a Philip'pi, he asked his disciples, "Who do men say that the Son of man is?" And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, others say Eli'jah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets." He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Simon Peter replied, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." And Jesus answered him, "Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jona! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and 5
the powers of death shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven." Then he strictly charged the disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ. The Gospel of Christ. Praise to Christ our Lord.
FROM THE RECTOR’S NOTEBOOK Greetings: The long summer holiday is coming to an end giving way to what used to be called the Michaelmas term meaning the first term of the academic year. Many persons who travelled for the summer holidays are returning. On the other hand, others are leaving to ensure that their Secondary school graduates are settled into universities overseas. Here in Barbados we continue to pray that persons reading for degrees at Cave Hill will not give up or lose heart; but so orient themselves and resources in order to complete this vital part of the ongoing learning process. Professors, lecturers, tutors and teachers are perhaps all updating and brushing up their notes, Keynote Presentations and online resources in preparation for the demands of the classroom.

Hopefully students have been familiarizing themselves with the reading material so as to obtain maximum benefit from the teachinglearning enterprise and as they take responsibility for their own learning. One of the characteristics that we must continually cultivate among us is a love for learning. We can easily love knowledge for its own sake; but knowledge must also help us to live in community with others. In a review article in the Chronicle for Higher Education Harry R. Lewis, a professor of computer science at Harvard University, former dean of Harvard College makes the point that during the 4th century BC the conflicts about educational purpose in bourgeois societies were already prospering in Athens. He states that in that time Socrates and Protagoras were arguing about education as soul-searching skepticism in service of personal and civic virtue, versus education as learning to get ahead in the world by giving the right answers. In the academy for good or ill much is driven by competition. We strive for excellence, to do better, to be wiser, to get a better grade. To strive for excellence is not bad intrinsically. Very often it was said of Jesus “He has done all this well (Mark 7:37). Our Saviour himself has set the standard for us to follow. Excellence in Christ was not for himself; he would strive always to help others, he had a communitarian outlook. We continue to pray for all in education both as teachers and learners from Nursery to University that in all things we may seek to build up that new community created in the image of Christ. Health Corner This week we will continue our look at the uses of vinegar. In these challenging economic times, it offers a much welcomed cheaper alternative to some popular cleaners. However it's more than just a cleaner, take a look at the following: Fresh flowers Enhance the longevity of your beautiful freshly cut flowers; Mix 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar and 2 tablespoons sugar with the water before placing the flowers in the vase. Mortar on hands Just finished working and have mortar on your hands; Wash your hands with undiluted vinegar to remove dried concrete or mortar off your skin, then wash with warm, soapy water. Prolonged contact with wet mortar can lead to cracked skin. Paint Smells Remove strong paint smells by placing shallow bowls of undiluted white vinegar in the freshly painted room.
Discolouration of collars Difficult discoloured rings around shirt collars or under the arms; Scrub the material with a paste made from 2 parts white vinegar to 3 parts baking soda. Let stand for a half an hour before washing.
