READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the Acts of the Apostles Chapter 16 beginning at the 16th verse As we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners much gain by soothsaying. She followed Paul and us, crying, "These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation." And this she did for many days. But Paul was annoyed, and turned and said to the spirit, "I charge you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her." And it came out that very hour. But when her owners saw that their hope of gain was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the market place before the rulers; and when they had brought them to the magistrates they said, "These men are Jews and they are disturbing our city. They advocate customs which it is not lawful for us Romans to accept or practice." The crowd joined in attacking them; and the magistrates tore the garments off them and gave orders to beat them with rods. And when they had inflicted many blows upon them, they threw them into prison, charging the jailer to keep them safely. Having received this charge, he put them into the inner prison and fastened their feet in the stocks. But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them, and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and every one's fetters were unfastened. When the jailer woke and saw that the prison doors were open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul cried with a loud voice, "Do not harm yourself, for we are all here." And he called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas, and brought them out and said, "Men, what must I do to be saved?" And they said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household." And they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all that were in his house. And he took them the same hour of the night, and washed their wounds, and he was baptized at once, with all his family. Then he brought them up into his house, and set food before them; and he rejoiced with all his household that he had believed in God. Reader: Here ends the Reading. ALL: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 47 Omnes gentes, plaudite 1 Clap your hands, all you peoples; * shout to God with a cry of joy. 2 For the Lord Most High is to be feared; * he is the great King over all the earth. 3 He subdues the peoples under us, * and the nations under our feet. 4 He chooses our inheritance for us, * the pride of Jacob whom he loves. 5 God has gone up with a shout, * the Lord with the sound of the ram’s-horn. 6 Sing praises to God, sing praises; * sing praises to our King, sing praises. 7 For God is King of all the earth; * sing praises with all your skill. 8 God reigns over the nations; * God sits upon his holy throne. 9 The nobles of the peoples have gathered together * with the people of the God of Abraham. 10 T he rulers of the earth belong to God, * and he is highly exalted. Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen.

THE EPISTLE A Reading from the Word of God written in the Revelation to John Chapter 22 beginning at the 12th verse "Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense, to repay every one for what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end." Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and that they may enter the city by the gates. "I Jesus have sent my angel to you with this testimony for the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, the bright morning star." The Spirit and the Bride say, "Come." And let him who hears say, "Come." And let him who is thirsty come, let him who desires take the water of life without price. He who testifies to these things says, "Surely I am coming soon." Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! Reader: ALL:

THE HOLY GOSPEL Gospeller: The Lord be with you ALL: And also with you Gospeller:
A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John ALL: Glory to Christ our Saviour.
As Jesus’ prayer continued he said "I do not pray for these only, but also for those who believe in me through their word, that they may all be one; even as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. The glory which thou hast given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, I in them and thou in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that thou hast sent me and hast loved them even as thou hast loved me. Father, I desire that they also, whom thou hast given me, may be with me where I am, to behold my glory which thou hast given me in thy love for me before the foundation of the world. O righteous Father, the world has not known thee, but I have known thee; and these know that thou hast sent me. I made known to them thy name, and I will make it known, that the love with which thou hast loved me may be in them, and I in them." Gospeller: ALL:

From the Rector’s Notebook: There is a lot to celebrate this weekend. Liturgically we are at that time in-between Ascension Day and Whitsunday. Along with the spiritual and theological significance of this time period we observe today with secular society as Mothers’ Day. As part of the christian spiritual tradition there are certain days on which as Anglicans we ought to make our communion. Ascension Day is one such occasion. Last Thursday evening therefore the christian community gathered here in this church as we gave thanks to God for the continued observance of Jesus’ glorification - his return to the Father. Professor Patrick Regan has done extensive research on the historical and liturgical importance of the Fifty Days of the Easter season - the Pasch. He elicits from his research an essential connection between Easter Day and the Days of Pentecost inclusive of Ascension Day. Vital in this is the link with the out pouring of the Holy Spirit. It is still important for us to link the holy days connecting birth, baptism, crucifixion, resurrection, ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus’ return to the Father is not limited to any one act or indeed any one day; but rather spans a number of liturgical feast days observed by the holy church. The Paschal Mystery, as Professor Regan often tells us, includes the bestowal of the Holy Spirit. The inclusion of the Holy Spirit states both theologically and practically that the action of Jesus is not limited to himself; but that we too are drawn into Christ’s saving action. Our task is to proclaim the Good News that for us there is an eternal hope and that when all things seem against us to have the understanding that ascension does not imply that Jesus is not with us but that by the power of the Holy Spirit our redeeming Lord remains with us forever. This is important for home and family life as we face the various challenges such as violence in our society. We are aware of troubling situations where there is violence in our homes and in the workplace. We are alarmed when we hear of violence among the young; however we must ask the question coming our of media reports whether such behaviour is not learnt from parents. May God bless all mothers and guardians on this special time and may we patiently await the celebration of the birth of the church on Whitsunday. Your friend and priest Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector !
