THE FIRST READING: READER:

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Acts of the Apostles Chapter 2 beginning at the 14th verse.

Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, "Therefore let the entire house of Israel know with certainty that God has made him both Lord and Messiah, this Jesus whom you crucified.” Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and to the other apostles, "Brothers, what should we do?” Peter said to them, "Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you, for your children, and for all who are far away, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to him.” And he testified with many other arguments and exhorted them, saying, "Save yourselves from this corrupt generation.” So those who welcomed his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand persons were added. THE EPISTLE READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in 1st Peter Chapter 1 beginning at the 17th verse.

If you invoke as Father the one who judges all people impartially according to their deeds, live in reverent fear during the time of your exile. You know that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your ancestors, not with perishable things like silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without defect or blemish. He was destined before the foundation of the world, but was revealed at the end of the ages for your sake. Through him you have come to trust in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are set on God. Now that you have purified your souls by your obedience to the truth so that you have genuine mutual love, love one another deeply from the heart. You have been born anew, not of perishable but of imperishable seed, through the living and enduring word of God. Reader: ALL:

Here ends the Reading Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke Glory to Christ our Saviour. !4

On that same day two of the disciples were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, "What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?" They stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days? He asked them, "What things?" They replied, "The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, and when they did not find his body there, they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said; but they did not see him. Then he said to them, "Oh, how foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory? Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures. As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. But they urged him strongly, saying, "Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over." So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with !5

them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him; and he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, "Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?” That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem; and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. They were saying, "The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!” Then they told what had happened on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread. From The Rector’s Notebook Robert J. Daly an emeritus professor in the theology department of Boston college states that sacrifice is one of the mist misunderstood words in all of christian theology. Indeed if we were to search on the Internet for the word sacrifice we would come up with a variety of meanings spawning Old Testament, New Testament and even a secular outlook. The secular outlook is often negative; it has often to do with reluctantly giving up something of value for one reason or another. Very often sacrifice is rendered as the giving up of something that we love or the killing of an animal for some religious purpose. When we consider sacrifice in the Old Testament the story in Genesis chapter 22 comes to mind the testing of Abraham and the near slaying of his son Isaac. Of course in reading the Old Testament we read of Jewish sacrifices the slaying of oxen and lambs. The early christians being Jews used the images with which they were familiar to speak of the Paschal Mystery, Christ’s crucifixion, resurrection, ascension and the coming of the Holy Spirit. St. Paul was one of the first persons to speak of Christ’s death as a sacrifice. For our Paschal lamb, Christ, has been sacrificed. 1 Corinthians 5: 7

The same blessed Apostle would write to the Church in Rome I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual[b] worship. Romans 12:1 Even when we consider the life of Christ; we must remember that he was not giving up something that he cherished; that is he did not die unwillingly; but opted to lay down his life for us. The author of the Epistle to the Hebrews tells us Yahweh did not desire the sacrifice of bulls and goats; but rather prepared a body that he should die willingly. In that sense Christ changes the notion of sacrifice of something given up grudgingly to that which is offered happily. One can agree with Professor Daly when he says that authentic sacrificial activity is thus a responsive interpersonal human activity that Christians are enabled to make only in the power of the same Holy Spirit that was in Jesus. This responsive activity is ritualized in the Eucharist; but it does not end there it is lived out when we go in peace to serve the Lord in our community.

HEALTH CORNER BY: SOPHIA MARSHALL, PH.D DRINK WATER, DRINK WATER These days are so hot! Are you drinking enough fluids? Have you thought of or researched the reasons why we should drink enough fluids every day? Let's look at a few important reasons: Balance of Body Fluids: The human body is composed of approximately 60% water. Bodily fluids are lost throughout the day from breathing, urine, stool and skin evaporation. Water loss from the body is said to be either "sensible" or "insensible". Sensible loss is measureable and you know that you have lost it e.g. urine. Insensible loss cannot be measured directly and you don't know that you have lost it e.g. respiratory loss. The minimal amount of fluid loss from the body that can occur is referred to as the obligatory water loss. These fluids must be replaced to maintain good health. Hydrate Muscle Cells The imbalance of fluids and electrolytes in the body can result in the onset of muscle fatigue. Think of a grape placed in the sun! Essentially the cells tend to shrivel and this adversely affects their functions. Not only muscle cells need water though, it is essential for every cell in your body. American College of Sports Medicine recommends that persons drink about 17 ounces (approx. 2 cups) of fluid about 2 hours before exercise. Fluids should be taken early and regularly during exercise to prevent dehydration. Normal Bowel Movement Your colon tries to compensate for inadequate hydration by pulling water from stools. This action results in constipation. Drink plenty fluids and keep your colon happy. Calorie Control Are you trying to lose or maintain your weight? There are no calories in water, so substitute that soda with water or highwater -content foods such as fruits. Drinking water isn't the only way to stay hydrated, add these high water content foods to your diet. These foods are refreshing, filled with nutrients, and naturally low in calories.
