THE COLLECT: THE FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER page 169 THE FIRST READING: READER:
A Reading from the Word of God written in the Acts of the Apostles Chapter 2 beginning at the 42nd verse.
They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved. Reader: ALL:

THE EPISTLE READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in 1st Peter Chapter 2 beginning at the 19th verse.
For it is a credit to you if, being aware of God, you endure pain while suffering unjustly. If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, what credit is that? But if you endure when you do right and suffer for it, you have God's approval. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps. "He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth. When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls. Reader: ALL:

Jesus said, Very truly, I tell you, anyone who does not enter the sheepfold by the gate but climbs in by another way is a thief and a bandit. The one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep. The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep hear his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes ahead of them, and the sheep follow him because they know his voice. They will not follow a stranger, but they will run from him because they do not know the voice of strangers. Jesus used this figure of speech with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them. So again Jesus said to them, "Very truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and bandits; but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the gate. Whoever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly." Message from His Grace the Archbishop of the West Indies, Primate and Metropolitan and The Bishop of Barbados The Most Rev’d Dr. The Honorable John W. D. Holder for Home and Family Month May, 2017 To be shared with congregations on Sunday, May 7, My Friends in Christ, Greetings to you in the name of Our Lord. The month of May is observed as Home and Family Month. We pause to reflect on God’s great gift of the family. We offer special thanks for the blessings and joys of family life that can help us to understand God’s love for us and his world. The family places a high level of responsibility upon us. This responsibility is at its highest level, in the moulding of the young, within the family. Through this process, we work to ensure the great qualities we associate with God; qualities like honesty, fair play, caring, sharing and forgiveness, are passed on to our children. These qualities can help them, to appreciate the great treasures of family life. When our families are not strong and supportive of the young; if they do not provide a wholesome nurturing environment, where our children can learn to distinguish right from wrong, and where they become conscious that there is a God to be worshiped and praised, then something will be missing from their lives. Our focus on family, must therefore be at the same time, a focus on wholesome child rearing, which the family ought to create. We must make every effort to give our children the time and the space to grow and mature without inflicting upon them the burdens that are not of their making. We need to let them grow within a godly, supportive, and caring environment, allowing them to develop at the pace of children. They should never be robbed of those precious years of childhood innocence. !6
Let us make a commitment as parents, guardians, adults and children, to live up to the great responsibility that family life places upon us. Let us work to ensure that our families are strong and that our homes are places where love and support are experienced by all. We pray that God will grant all parents the strength, vison and courage they need to guide the young that God has placed in their care. We pray especially for those who may be finding their family responsibilities difficult. May God grant them the courage they need at this time to do their very best. Let us stay committed to our families, in light all the many things that can pose a threat to good, Christian family relationships. Let us become even more aware of the crucial role of the family in helping us to cope with life. In a world that is becoming very fast paced and more impersonal, the warmth and support that the family can provide is absolutely necessary. We pray at this time for all families. May God enable us to make our families wonderful experiences of his many blessings. Your friend and Bishop, + John Barbados

HEALTH CORNER BY: SOPHIA MARSHALL, PH.D CONTROLLING YOUR CHOLESTEROL We learnt that too much ‘bad’ cholesterol (LDL) can lead to cardiovascular disease. Fortunately, they are ways of lowering your cholesterol and your risk of heart disease and stroke. Your situation may be such that your doctor prescribes medication to help lower your cholesterol. Whether or not this is the case, lifestyle changes are vital to improving your cholesterol levels and overall health. GET ACTIVE Become physically active! You can lower your cholesterol by doing 40 minutes of moderate to vigorous intensity aerobic exercise 3 to 4 times a week. Take a friend, spouse or even a work colleague and take a brisk walk on evenings or mornings. Go dancing or riding but find something that you enjoy! EAT FOR A HEALTHY HEART Start following a heart-healthy diet. Modify your meals to include more fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grains, fish and low-fat dairy products. Reduce your intake of red meat and high-sugar foods. QUIT SMOKING Yes, quit smoking because it can lower ‘good’ cholesterol (HDL) and raise the level of triglycerides (type of fat) in your blood. Cigarettes contain acrolein, a chemical compound, which is believed to interfere with the function of HDL. This results in more accumulation of fat in the bloodstream and throughout the body. EDUCATE YOURSELF Learn about the fats that increase ‘bad’ cholesterol levels and this will assist you in making informed decisions when grocery shopping. Pay attention to the nutrition labels on the food items that you buy. Labels are supposed to be a source of vital information and are not just for decoration. Research any words that you don’t understand by using the internet or reading books. Let’s start today to make these lifestyle changes and aim for better health!
