O God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as surpass our understanding: Pour into our hearts such love towards you, that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire, through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
!THE FIRST READING: !READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the
Acts of the Apostles Chapter 17 beginning at the 22nd verse
!Paul, standing in the middle of the Are-op'agus, said: "Men of
Athens, I perceive that in every way you are very religious. For as I passed along, and observed the objects of your worship, I found also an altar with this inscription, `To an unknown god.' What therefore you worship as unknown, this I proclaim to you.
 The God who made the world and everything in it, being Lord of heaven and earth, does not live in shrines made by man, nor is he served by human hands, as though he needed anything, since he himself gives to all men life and breath and everything. And he made from one every nation of men to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their habitation, that they should seek God, in the hope that they might feel after him and find him. Yet he is not far from each one of us, for `In him we live and move and have our being';

!3
as even some of your poets have said, `For we are indeed his offspring.' Being then God's offspring, we ought not to think that the Deity is like gold, or silver, or stone, a representation by the art and imagination of man. The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all men everywhere to repent, because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed, and of this he has given assurance to all men by raising him from the dead."

!THE EPISTLE !A Reading from the Word of God written in the First Letter of Peter Chapter 3 beginning at the 8th verse.
Finally, all of you, have unity of spirit, sympathy, love of the brethren, a tender heart and a humble mind. Do not return evil for evil or reviling for reviling; but on the contrary bless, for to this you have been called, that you may obtain a blessing. For "He that would love life and see good days, let him keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking guile; let him turn away from evil and do right; let him seek peace and pursue it.For the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and his ears are open to their prayer. But the face of the Lord is against those that do evil." Now who is there to harm you if you are zealous for what is right? But even if you do suffer for righteousness' sake, you
!5
will be blessed. Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, but in your hearts reverence Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to make a defense to any one who calls you to account for the hope that is in you, yet do it with gentleness and reverence; and keep your conscience clear, so that, when you are abused, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing right, if that should be God's will, than for doing wrong. For Christ also died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit;
!
THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you.
!
A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John Glory to Christ our Saviour. At that time Jesus said, "I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch of mine that bears no fruit, he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already made clean by the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If a man does not abide in me, he is cast forth as a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples.
The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord. Pray for the sick, especially for Tyrell McCollin !6
From the Rector’s Desk Greetings:
!
The Anglican Church in Barbados this past week completed the annual session of the Sacred Synod of the Diocese.
!
Our Parish was ably represented by Mr. Tyrone Squires who spoke with tremendous passion, vigour and great sensitivity on youth work and the ministry of Altar Servers in the Diocese.
!
We were able to see for yet another session one of our members Ms. Julia Weekes elected to the Barbados Diocesan Pensions Board, thus placing her immense experience and knowledge in the service of the Church.
!
Two other Diocesan Officers, who are quite well known to us and who contribute to the work here in the parish, are the Diocesan Chancellor Mr. Charles Leacock and the Diocesan Secretary Ms. Cynthia Dash, they have again carried out significant roles in ensuring the orderliness of the Synod.
!
One of the highlights of Synod is of course the Bishop’s Charge which was delivered within the Mass last Sunday evening in the Cathedral Church of St. Michael and All Angels.
!
His Grace expressed the view that those who mandated that we meet annually in Synod were ensuring that as we minister as a diocese and engage in the process of reviewing the past and planning for the future, we draw on the experience and the wisdom of a large body of persons from across the diocese.
!
!7
One of the areas that occupied a large portion of the Bishop’s attention was the ministry to our young people.
!
While mentioning some of the challenges facing our young people such as crime, sexually transmitted infection and drug addiction, His Grace maintained that we must continue to guide and direct this age group in our society.
!
His view is that we must avoid the harsh criticism so often leveled at our youth.
!
Such criticism, we are aware, can even be directed towards some of the young people within the church; many of whom are intelligent, industrious, faithful; yet daring and curious and in need of the gentle guiding hand.
!
Last Sunday in our parish we saw the amazing event in which our young members were hosts to the Cropover Band “Youth Explosion”. This band again this year made the St. David’s Church the venue for their launch and participated in the worship to the fullest.
!
Let us continue to lift in prayer our Sunday School, Youth Group and Altar Servers’ Guild.
!
Let us also remember those preparing for Confirmation that the parents will see it fit in ensuring that those within their care develop a healthy and wholesome relationship with God almighty.
! Yours friend and priest, !
Noel A. Burke MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector

HEALTH CORNER!
CHOLESTEROL The last time you visited the doctor, you were told that your cholesterol was high. Do you really understand what this means? What is cholesterol? Let’s take a look together! Cholesterol is a waxy material that is produced naturally by the liver. However, we also consume it through animal products such as meats, eggs and milk products. It protects the nerves, produces hormones and makes cell tissues. Your body makes what it needs; therefore there is no recommended intake for cholesterol.
!
Types of Cholesterol There are two kinds of cholesterol –Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) Cholesterol and High-Density Lipoprotein (HDL) Cholesterol. LDL Cholesterol is the ‘bad’ type because if too much circulates in the blood, thick deposits known as plaque can build up in the blood vessels. This leads to a narrowing of the arteries, and an eventual decrease in the amount of blood and oxygen going to the heart. This can result in heart disease and heart attacks.
!

HDL Cholesterol is the ‘good’ fellow because it assists in removing LDL from the arteries and to the liver where it is broken down and disposed from the body. Research has shown that there is a link between low levels of HDL and increased risk of heart disease. When you have a blood test done, the levels of HDL and LDL cholesterol are measured. According to the American Heart Association, you are at risk of high cholesterol if your levels of LDL are greater than 200mg/dL or HDL is less than 40 mg/dL. You are borderline risk of high cholesterol if your level of HDL falls in the range 200-239mg/dL. You have high cholesterol if your LDL level is greater than 240mg/dL. Next time you visit the doctor, make note of your levels!
!*mg/dL means milligrams in a deciliter of blood !
