THE FIRST READING: READER:
A Reading from the Word of God written in the Acts of the Apostles Chapter 10 beginning at the 34th verse.
Then Peter began to speak to them: "I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ--he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." Reader: ALL:
Here ends the Reading Thanks be to God.

THE EPISTLE READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in Colossians Chapter 3 beginning at the 1st verse. So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory. Reader: ALL:
Here ends the Reading Thanks be to God. THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John Glory to Christ our Saviour.
Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, "They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him. Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus' head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, !4
also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples returned to their homes. But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping?" She said to them, "They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?" Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, "Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” Jesus said to her, "Mary!" She turned and said to him in Hebrew, "Rabbouni!" (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, "Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, 'I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’" Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, "I have seen the Lord"; and she told them that he had said these things to her. The Bishop’s Easter Message – 2017 Easter is the celebration of the transforming power of God. It is a celebration of freedom from the enslaving powers of this world and the proclamation of God’s liberating power of life and light. The Easter story tells of the women, the friends of Jesus, travelling in the dark to his tomb, with the memories and experiences of his death, taking with them refreshing spices to anoint his body. This reflects a commitment not to be overwhelmed by darkness and death. As an empowering story about life, it reflects the courage and the determination that should be present in our lives as Christians. The spices carried by the women can be seen as representing more than an effort to preserve a dead body. They represent as well a spark of life that was being taken into a situation of death. Every Christian should be like those women and find the courage to bring into situations of loss and despair some spark of light and inspiration that can help someone to cope. The women, on that mission to carrying their spark of life to a condition of death, had the greatest surprise of their lives. God was already at work, and where they were expecting darkness and death, there was now light and life. Death had given way to life as the dark night had given way to the light of day. As those who believe in the transforming resurrection power of God to bring life where there is death, we must put these convictions to work. !6
We too can be like the women and assist in bringing a spark of life to conditions that are overwhelmed by experiences of death. There may be persons who like the disciples have recently lost a loved one. Be like the women and be the spark of hope for them. There are those who have had a setback in life and are in a condition of despair. Be not afraid to identify with them, convinced that like the women in the Easter story they can move from darkness to experiences of light. The powerful message of Easter speaks to us in a special way at this time in our country. Amidst the waves of bad news, and uncertainty about the future; like the women in the Easter story, we can share with those who are overwhelmed by these conditions, the positive message that there can be light and life and hope, where they now seem to be absent. Let us be heralds of this Easter message of hope, which can still empower us to press on in spite of the hurdles of life. I wish you a blessed Eastertide. HEALTH CORNER BY: SOPHIA MARSHALL, PH.D Body image is the mental representation or internal picture we have of our physical body; an inner view of our outer selves. Our body image is strongly influenced by messages from family, friends, television, movies and other sectors of society. Do you have a positive or negative image of yourself? Did you look at the lady, who just sat in front of you and wished you had her hips? What about the gentleman in the choir? Do you wish that you were handsome like him? Pursuit of that ‘perfect’ body never leads to happiness. Here are some tips to help you learn to love your body: -
Change your self-talk. Follow your thoughts for 1 or 2 days. Be vigilant in hearing the types of messages that you repeat about your inner and outer self. Increase positive self- messages and decrease the negative ones.
-
Develop affirmations that focus on a new attitude about your body. “I like my body when I eat the way it wants me to. I have attractive legs. I have nice arms.”
-
If you are weighing yourself, throw out the scale! This metal object has been given too much power to determine how you feel on any given day.
-
Ask yourself if you exercise for appearance or for fitness. If it is for appearance, you may want to assess how helpful this is to achieving a positive body image.
-
Try not to compare yourself to models, actors, magazine photos. They search the world over for these faces and bodies and none of them are as they appear! Television makeup takes hours to apply, photography tricks and photo airbrushing eliminate lines, blemishing and pores. These people don’t even look this way in real life.
-
Talk to a professional if negative body image is hurting you in your personal life, relationship or the workplace.
