THE FIRST READING: READER:
A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Isaiah Chapter 42 beginning at the 1st verse.
Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching. Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the Lord, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them. Reader: ALL: PSALM 29
Here ends the Reading Thanks be to God. Page 502

THE EPISTLE READER:
A Reading from the Word of God written in the Arts of the Apostles Chapter 10 beginning at the 34th verse.
Then Peter began to speak to them: ‘I truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ—he is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.’ Reader: ALL:
Here ends the Reading Thanks be to God.
THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mathew Glory to Christ our Saviour. Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, ‘I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?’ But !4
Jesus answered him, ‘Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfil all righteousness.’ Then he consented. And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved,* with whom I am well pleased.’ The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord.
From the Rector’s Notebook
Greetings:
In the early church the Feast of the Epiphany brought together many different strands or themes. It was an observance of the visit of the Magi the Wise men from the East. It was also an observance of Jesus’ birth and in addition it was a testimony to the Baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan. !5
Eventually, December 25 was set as the date for the celebration of the Nativity of our Lord; while January 6 retained the early features of the way in which our Lord’s divine nature was revealed. Professor Patrick Regan tells us that unlike the Nativity of the Lord on December 25, the solemnity of the Epiphany on January 6 originated not at Rome but in the Christian East, possibly Egypt but more probably Syria, (The same Syria we read about in the news today) By the time of the writing of the Gospels the celebration of baptism had been firmly established in the church as the means by which persons were to become Christians. It is for this reason that all four Gospels, Mark, Matthew, Luke and John, make mention of the Baptism of our Lord, albeit in different ways Regan explains that the Christians in Syria took Jesus’ baptism as the model of Christian baptism, by which sinful humans receive the Spirit and are born again as children of God in accord with John 3:5. We must note that model does not mean same as, since the baptism of John was not initiatory, as is Christian Baptism.
!6
In other words as another liturgical theologian, Professor Maxwell Johnson puts it, John’s Baptism pointed towards what was to come. The baptism practiced by the disciples of Christ brought persons into the family of Christ. We celebrate baptism in the church today; but not with the the kind of deep spiritual meaning it deserves. Many parents bring their children to baptism; but do not follow it up by bringing the children to Mass. Similarly too many of our young people do not return after Confirmation to make their communion regularly. This is again a call to all parents on this Feast of the Baptism of our Lord to take the initiation of their children into Christ seriously, allowing them to participate in the wonderful ways of Christ. We thank God for our Baptism and pray for the grace to live out our baptismal vows. Your friend and priest,
Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector !7

HEALTH CORNER BY: SOPHIA MARSHALL, PH.D It's a new year and you have started to pay more attention to food labels and the listed ingredients; however here are a few phrases or terms that you should be wary of:
No Sugar Added No sugar added doesn’t mean a product is calorie or carbohydrate free! Remember foods, including fruits and vegetables naturally contain sugar. So although these products may not have added sugar, they still may contain natural sugars. Sugar Free Sugar-free products have less than 0.5 grams of sugars per serving, but they still contain calories and carbohydrates from other sources. Sugar free doesn’t mean a product has fewer calories than the regular version; it may have more. These products may contain sugar alcohols such as mannitol or sorbitol. Fat Free Fat-free products could be loaded with sugar, and sugarfree products could be loaded with fat. Sometimes fat-free products can contained nearly as many calories as the fullfat versions. Light The term 'light' has been used by manufacturers in reference to the flavour and not calorie count as often interpreted by the consumer. To be considered a light product, the fat content has to be 50% less than the amount found in comparable products. Remember read the labels carefully, do your research and don't be fooled!
