THE COLLECT ! Father in heaven, who at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit: Grant that all who are baptized into his Name may keep the covenant they have made, and boldly confess him as Lord and Saviour; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen!

! THE LESSON:! !

READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the ! Book of Isaiah chapter 42 beginning at the 1st verse! Behold my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him, he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not fail or be discouraged till he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his law. Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread forth the earth and what comes from it, who gives

breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: "I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the LORD, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to graven images. Behold, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth I tell you of them.!

Psalm 89: 20-29 20. I have found David my servant;* with my holy oil have I anointed him. 21. My hand will hold him fast* and my arm will make him strong. 22. No enemy shall deceive him,* nor any wicked man bring him down. 23. I will crush his foes before him* and strike down those who hate him. 24. My faithfulness and love shall be with him,* and he shall be victorious through my name. 25. I shall make his dominion extend* from the Great Sea to the River. 26.He will say to me, ‘You are my father,*my God, and the rock of my salvation.’ 27. I will make him my firstborn* and higher than the kings of the earth. 28. I will keep my love for him for ever,* and my covenant will stand firm for him 29. I will establish his line for ever* and his throne as the days of heaven.

THE EPISTLE! A Reading from the Word of God written in the Acts of the Apostles Chapter 10 beginning at the 34th verse!

!

Peter opened his mouth and said: "Truly I perceive that God shows no partiality, but in every nation any one who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the word which he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace by Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all), the word which was proclaimed throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism which John preached: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. ! ! THE HOLY GOSPEL!

!

The Lord be with you! And also with you! A Reading from the Holy Gospel ! according to Matthew! Glory to Christ our Saviour.!

!

Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. John would have prevented him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?" But Jesus answered him, "Let it be so now; for thus it is fitting for us to fulfil all righteousness." Then he consented. And when Jesus was baptized, he went up immediately from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and alighting on him; and lo, a voice from heaven, saying, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased." !

! !

The Gospel of Christ.! Praise to Christ our Lord.!

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings:

!

Today is the 1st Sunday after the Epiphany. It is the Feast of the Baptism of our Lord.

!

Professor Maxwell Johnson tells us that the Baptism of Jesus has long been associated with the season of Epiphany and is one of the ways in which Jesus' identity as Lord and God is revealed.

!

Baptism is the Rite of initiation into the Christian community The New Testament takes it for granted that those who belong to the community have been baptized. Questions arise, however, when we

!6

encounter the various formulas and metaphors for baptism.

!

When we ask about the actual origins, the possible theological and cultic background of Christian baptism, we realize that there are no baptismal formulas in the New Testament. Mention is made of baptism; but we are not told how it is done.

!

The image of being totally submerged in water is not from the New Testament nor in fact from the early traditions of the church.

!

All four gospels begin the account of Jesus' public life with his baptism. This forum does not provide the space to deal with these four passages in detail however you may note

!

Mark 1 Verses 9 to 11 Matthew 3 Verses 13 to 17 Luke 3 Verses 21 to 22 John 1 Verses 28 to 34

!

In the 21st century baptism should not be a disputed rite in which some christians ask each other are you born again?

!

In the New Testament understanding to be Baptised at whatever age means to be born again and to be given a new name; that of Christian.

!

As baptised persons we carry the same name with the same image marked on our brow that of the sign of the cross which suggests as Paul says in the letter to the Romans chapter 6 that we have died with him; therefore we shall rise to new life.

!

Let us use our baptismal faith to help us to hold together in these troublesome times when the

!7

economic state of our country is not where we would want it.

!

In Baptism God and the church calls us into a new community, a new communion in which we all treat each other with value regardless of socio economic bracket.

!

Let us pray that in all things we may be built into that new community established by Christ.

! Your friend and priest, !

Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector

Solemnity of Jesus’ Baptism! Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Baptism of Our Lord. ! The Church recalls Our Lord's second manifestation or epiphany which occurred on the occasion of His baptism in the Jordan. ! Jesus descended into the River to sanctify its waters and to give them the power to beget sons of God. The event takes on the importance of a second creation in which the entire Trinity intervenes.! Many of the incidents which accompanied Christ's baptism are symbolical of what happened at our Baptism. ! At Christ's baptism the Holy Spirit descended upon Him; at our Baptism the Trinity took its abode in our soul. At His baptism Christ was proclaimed the "Beloved Son" of the Father; at our Baptism we become the adopted sons of God. At Christ's baptism the heavens were opened; at our Baptism heaven was opened to us. At His baptism Jesus prayed; after our Baptism we must pray to avoid actual sin.! — Excerpted from Msgr. Rudolph G. Bandas
