THE COLLECT Almighty and everlasting God, who dost govern all things both in heaven and earth: Mercifully hear the supplications of thy people, and in our time grant us your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE FIRST READING: READER:

A Reading from the Word of God written in the book of the Prophet Jeremiah Chapter 1 beginning at the 4th verse.

Now the word of the LORD came to me saying, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations.” Then I said, "Ah, Lord GOD! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a boy.” But the LORD said to me, "Do not say, 'I am only a boy'; for you shall go to all to whom I send you, and you shall speak whatever I command you, Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the LORD.” Then the LORD put out his hand and touched my mouth; and the LORD said to me, "Now I have put my words in your mouth. See, today I appoint you over nations and over kingdoms, to pluck up and to pull down, to destroy and to overthrow, to build and to plant.” Reader: ALL:

Here ends the Reading Thanks be to God. !3

PSALM 71: 1 - 6

In te, Domine, speravi

1. In you, O LORD, have I taken refuge; * let me never be ashamed. 2. In your righteousness, deliver me and set me free; * incline your ear to me and save me. 3. Be my strong rock, a castle to keep me safe; * you are my crag and my stronghold. 4. Deliver me, my God, from the hand of the wicked, * from of the clutches of the evildoer and the oppressor. 5. For you are my hope, O LORD God, * my confidence since I was young. 6. I have been sustained by you ever since I was born; from my mother's womb you have been my strength; * my praise shall be always of you. V. R.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen

THE EPISTLE READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the 1st letter of Paul to the Corinthians Chapter 13 beginning at the 1st verse. If I speak in the tongues of mortals and of angels, but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give away all my possessions, and if I hand over my body so that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all !4

things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love. Reader: ALL:

Here ends the Reading Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke Glory to Christ our Saviour. Then he began to say to them, "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They said, "Is not this Joseph's son?” He said to them, "Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb, 'Doctor, cure yourself!' And you will say, 'Do here also in your hometown the things that we have heard you did at Capernaum.’" And he said, "Truly I tell you, no prophet is accepted in the prophet's hometown. But the truth is, there were many widows in Israel in the time of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a severe famine over all the land; yet Elijah was sent to none of them except to a widow at Zarephath in !5

Sidon. There were also many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.” When they heard this, all in the synagogue were filled with rage. They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way. The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord.

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings: “The liturgy of the Eucharist is best understood as a journey or procession.” Excerpt From: Alexander Schmemann. “For the Life of the World.” iBooks. https:// itun.es/us/q0RlJ.l I have started to read a book that I bought this past week entitled For the Life of the World, written by Alexander Schmemann. Schmemann looks at the liturgy of the Eucharist from various perspectives; but the one that stands out for me is the notion of journey or procession. The the author begins with the idea that we start this journey when we rise from sleep, prepare ourselves and then set out from our homes for church.

It is in that light that we are on our way to constitute the Church, or to put it theologically to be transformed into the Church of God. We come together to enter in the joy of worship. This joy we are told, is not something we can easily define or analyze. Schmemann says that we have no other means of entering into that joy, no way of understanding it, except through the one action which from the beginning has been for the Church both the source and the fulfillment of joy, the very sacrament of the Eucharist. When we come to holy mass we come to worship Christ - crucified, risen and ascended. It is an imperative, a sacred duty rather than an option to make us feel good. Is is when we think of the spiritual meaning of the Holy Eucharist that we ponder on how truly profound it is. For many in the early church, they gathered for the sacred rites simply because it was meet and right and that they wanted to have their lives in community properly ordered. We have to put behind us the kind of behaviours that are self destroying. It is vital to realise what it means to be the Body of Christ and so frame our lives and those of our families to reflect the fact that we are the called community. The major challenge for evangelism, is that when we return to our communities after mass, we must continue to show love, joy, peace, forbearance, !7

kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." Galatians 5:22-23. May God’s grace be with us we leave the first month of the New Year 2016 behind, firm in our commitment that come what may, we will take our rightful places as members of the Body of Christ. HEALTH CORNER By Dr. Sophia Marshall Recently there has been great concern about the Zika virus and special emphasis on pregnant women or those planning to become pregnant. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) , with the current outbreak of the Zika virus in Brazil, there has been a marked increase in the number of infants born with microcephaly. However, it is not known how many of the microcephaly cases are associated with Zika virus infection. Researchers are studying the possible link between Zika virus infection and microcephaly. In the mean time, all preventative measures should be taken to safeguard against mosquito bites. Microcephaly at a glimpse Microcephaly is a relatively rare condition whereby a baby’s head is much smaller than expected. It can occur because a baby’s brain has not developed properly during pregnancy or has stopped growing after birth, which results in a smaller head size. Some children with microcephaly have normal intelligence and function in their everyday lives with no particular difficulty. However, many children with this disease, especially those with more severe cases experience: • • • •

mild to significant learning disabilities impaired motor functions difficulty with movement and balance speech delays
