THE FIRST READING: READER:

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Isaiah Chapter 49 beginning at the 1st verse.

Listen to me, O coastlands, pay attention, you peoples from far away! The LORD called me before I was born, while I was in my mother's womb he named me. He made my mouth like a sharp sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow, in his quiver he hid me away. And he said to me, "You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified." But I said, "I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my cause is with the LORD, and my reward with my God. And now the LORD says, who formed me in the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him, and that Israel might be gathered to him, for I am honoured in the sight of the LORD, and my God has become my strength- he says, "It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the survivors of Israel; I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth."Thus says the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One, to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nations, the slave 3

of rulers, "Kings shall see and stand up, princes, and they shall prostrate themselves, because of the LORD, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you." Reader:

THE EPISTLE READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in Paul’s letter to the Corinthians Chapter 1 beginning at the 1st verse.

Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes, To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Reader: ALL:

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John Glory to Christ our Saviour. The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, "Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.'I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel."And John testified, "I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God." The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, "Look, here is the Lamb of God!" The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi" (which translated means Teacher), "where are you staying? He said to them, "Come and see." They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon. One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. He first found his brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which is translated Anointed). He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas" (which is translated Peter).

The Gospel of Christ. Praise to Christ our Lord

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings: This week I am using this forum to commend, Dr. Sophia Marshall, PhD, for the Health Corner, the weekly column in this bulletin. Many persons benefit from the information and sound advice on health matters that contain advice on diet, the importance of being physically active and the significance of regular medical check-ups. The church has a particularly unique and important role in healthcare. When we examine both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible we note the profound mention of this. When persons became ill they sent for a prophet (2 Kings 4:8-37). Our Lord frequently made a connection between physical health and faith. (Mark 5:34, Luke 17:19) In one of our past parish conferences we took the decision that we will not serve high calorie meals and snacks that are high in sugar and salt. We must maintain this as we press on. We must partner with those who guard the health of our nation. The President of the Healthy Caribbean Coalition (HCC)) Sir Trevor Hassell continues to express concern for health and general wellness. He believes that the growing obesity in Barbados is now an epidemic and is due to unhealthy diets and physical practices. A UN Report in 2015 revealed that in Barbados BD$64 million was spent on the treatment of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, with the economy likely losing as much as BDS$145 million

annually due to missed work days, low productivity and reduced workforce participation. He says these Non Communicable Diseases in adults often are derived from bad eating habits that starts from an early age – as he links obesity in youth to the incidences in adults. The Childhood Obesity Prevention Programme, part of the wider Healthy Caribbean Coalition is spearheaded by the Heart and Stroke foundation of Barbados. It continues to build capacity and to advocate for policies aimed at a reduction of obesity in children, by targeting unhealthy food choices, encouraging children to drink water rather than sugary drinks and encouraging more physical activity among our youth. More physical activity is vital for all of us and we must commend the Health Guild of the St. David’s Church for the weekly Line Dancing Programme and the once monthly health walk on the final Saturday morning of each month. These physical engagements encourage us to take responsibility for our own health. The standard set by the World Health Organisation is that we become engaged in thirty minutes of physical activity daily. May this New Year bring us good health and an increased knowledge of taking good care of our mortal bodies, keeping them clean and fair, whole and sound. Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, MA, (The Rev’d Canon) Rector

HEALTH CORNER BY: SOPHIA MARSHALL, PH.D Vegetables are good sources of vitamins, minerals and fiber. Each person should aim to eat two or more servings of vegetables daily. How much is that? A serving is 4 ounces or half cup of vegetables. Did you know? •

1 serving of the following vegetables can provide all or nearly all of the Vitamin A needed daily: Parsley, spinach, carrots, cabbage leaves, le4uce and pumpkin

1 serving of the following vegetables can provide you with about half of the Vitamin C you need daily: String beans, christophene, okra, ripe tomatoes, le4uce and pumpkin

Try to cook vegetables in the minimum amount of water. Too much water will result in greater losses of nutrients and flavor. The water used to cook vegetables could be used in stews and soups. This water contains water soluble nutrients.

To reduce nutrient losses and cooking Fme, add vegetables to boiling water. This also aids in preserving flavor.

Many nutrients are concentrated just beneath the skin, therefore where possible cook vegetables in their skins. If you don’t eat the skins, you can peel them aKer cooking by pulling the thin layer off; you would have sFll preserved the nutrients during the cooking process.

Nutrient loss occurs when vegetables are exposed to light and air; therefore, don’t wash, chop, or slice vegetables unFl you are ready to use them.
