THE FIRST READING: READER:

A Reading from the Word of God written in the book of Isaiah Chapter 49 beginning at the 1st verse.

Listen to me, O coastlands, pay attention, you peoples from far away! The LORD called me before I was born, while I was in my mother's womb he named me. He made my mouth like a sharp sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow, in his quiver he hid me away. And he said to me, "You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified.” But I said, "I have laboured in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my cause is with the LORD, and my reward with my God.” And now the LORD says, who formed me in the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him, and that Israel might be gathered to him, for I am honored in the sight of the LORD, and my God has become my strengthhe says, "It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the survivors of Israel; I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.” Thus says the LORD, the Redeemer of Israel and his Holy One, to one deeply despised, abhorred by the nations, the slave of rulers, "Kings shall see and stand up, princes, and they shall prostrate themselves, because of the LORD, who is faithful, the Holy One of Israel, who has chosen you." Reader: ALL:

Here ends the Reading Thanks be to God. !3

THE EPISTLE READER:

A Reading from Paul’s 1st letter to the Corinthians Chapter 1 beginning at the 1st verse.

Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes, To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Reader: ALL:

Here ends the Reading Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John Glory to Christ our Saviour. The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him and declared, "Here is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, 'After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me because he was before me.’ I myself did not know him; but I came baptizing with water !4

for this reason, that he might be revealed to Israel.” And John testified, "I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I myself have seen and have testified that this is the Son of God.” The next day John again was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by, he exclaimed, "Look, here is the Lamb of God!” The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. When Jesus turned and saw them following, he said to them, "What are you looking for?" They said to him, "Rabbi" (which translated means Teacher), "where are you staying?” He said to them, "Come and see." They came and saw where he was staying, and they remained with him that day. It was about four o'clock in the afternoon. One of the two who heard John speak and followed him was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. He first found his brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which is translated Anointed). He brought Simon to Jesus, who looked at him and said, "You are Simon son of John. You are to be called Cephas" (which is translated Peter). The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord.

FROM THE RECTOR’S NOTEBOOK Greetings: The year 2017 will usher in new opportunities for ministry not only within the St. David’s Parish; but across the Diocese as well This year according to the two year cycle new or returning persons will be elected to Serve on the Parochial Church Council and at Synod, as Synod Representative and Alternate Synod Representative respectively. Let me at this time express thanks to the Wardens and members of the Parochial Church Council for their sacrifice of time and their God given talents and abilities which they have brought to the matters that would have come up over the past two years. The opportunity to serve on the Church Council must be embraced as it helps us appreciate more fully the day to day issues that come before that body, and to assist in the kind of decision making that contributes to the good of parish the community. According to James Russel Lowell “New occasions teach new duties” and nothing we may note in life remains the same. We are reminded by Hugh R. Leavell, M.D., Dr.P.H of words from the Stoic Philosopher and Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius, Aurelius in The Meditations (Written 167BC) invites us to ”observe always that everything is the result of a change, and get used to thinking that !6

there is nothing Nature loves so well as to change existing forms.. As a church we minister in an ever changing context and always there is the need for new; but sound ideas for going forward. The late Archbishop of Canterbury tell us that the priest stands among us as the person of prayer, theology, spirituality, worship in the celebration of liturgy and sacraments and preacher and pastor of God’s flock in the proclamation of the Gospel. Yet that Gospel calls us as a church in the community to be active in the natural and built up environment, in health care and social issues, in caring for the poor and needy, the procuring of contracts for its workers and the stewardship and responsibility for funds. These and others helps us to see the various areas in which members can be involved in decision making and in the setting of policy for the parish. Let each one of us listen to the good Lord who empowers us for ministry and let each one of us be actively involved in this awesome ministry to which we have been called. Your friend and Priest, Noel A. Burke. M.A. (The Rev’d Canon) Rector

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity At least once a year, Christians are reminded of Jesus’ prayer for his disciples that “they may be one so that the world may believe” (see John 17.21). Hearts are touched and Christians come together to pray for their unity. Congregations and parishes all over the world exchange preachers or arrange special ecumenical celebrations and prayer services. The event that touches off this special experience is the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. Traditionally the week of prayer is celebrated between 18-25 January, between the feasts of St Peter and St Paul. In the southern hemisphere, where January is a vacation time, churches often find other days to celebrate it, for example around Pentecost, which is also a symbolic date for unity. Please pray during the coming week for the Barbados Christian Council, its Chairman and members of the executive. Pray also for all Heads of Church including those that are not within the Council that the wish and desire expressed in the prayer of our Lord for oneness may be fulfilled. https://www.oikoumene.org/en/resources/week-of-prayer
