THE FIRST READING: READER:

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of the Prophet Isaiah Chapter 9 beginning at the 1st verse.

There will be no gloom for those who were in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he will make glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness on them light has shined. You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppress Reader: ALL:

Psalm 7: 1, 5-13

THE EPISTLE READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in 1 Corinthians Chapter 1 beginning at the 10th verse.

Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same purpose. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there are quarrels among you, my brothers and sisters. What I mean is that each of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ. Has Christ been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, so that no one can say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to proclaim the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power. For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. Reader: ALL:

Here ends the Reading Thanks be to God. THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew Glory to Christ our Saviour. 4

Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned. From that time Jesus began to proclaim, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near." As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea for they were fishermen. And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fish for people." Immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him. Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people. The Gospel of Christ. Praise to Christ our Lord

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings: οἵ τε βάρβαροι παρεῖχον οὐ τὴν τυχοῦσαν φιλανθρωπίαν ἡµῖν, (Greek) The native people showed us unusual kindness, Acts 28:2 The just concluded Week of Prayer for Christian Unity had the above verse from Acts 28:2 as its theme. The Week itself was quite excellent with a number of highlights such as the Ecumenical Service at the St. Paul’s Church, The Morning Retreat for clergy of the various denominations which was conducted by the Bishop of Barbados, The Rt. Rev’d Michael Maxwell and a Prayer Breakfast. The theme for the week recounted the Journey of Paul the Apostle as he travelled under Roman Guard along with other prisoners to Rome. At Rome, Paul would go on trial before the Roman Emperor and eventually suffer martyrdom. While on the way they were shipwrecked and ended up during the night on the island of Malta. It would seem that St. Luke, the author of the Acts of the Apostles was with Paul on this journey, as a companion and perhaps personal physician. The passages were written in the first person plural. St. Luke referred to those who extended hospitality to them on land as Barbarian (βάρβαροι). This simply meant that these folks did not speak Greek

6

Historians tell us that by the 1st century AD the Maltese islands had their own senate and people’s assembly and minted their coins based on Roman weight measurements. They were suspicious because centuries before, Romans had pillaged and devastated their land. Despite this they extended tremendous hospitality and kindness (φιλανθρωπίαν - philanthropy) to these Romans on this occasion. Their actions seemed to have impressed the author of the Acts of the Apostles, and so he wrote. The native people showed us unusual kindness Acts 28:2 This says quite a lot for the way in which countries today treat visitors, residents and especially those who find themselves shipwrecked in the storms of poverty, hunger and war at the various borders across the world. Countries across the world might be called upon to review their treatment of those who come from various geographic regions of the world. (Hebrews 13: 2) Ecumenically we must be kind and charitable to those of other denomination and religions, as we have opportunity. (Galatians 6:10) We give thanks for the Week just concluded and we pray for the fulfillment of Jesus’ prayer, that we may all be one as he and the Father are One. (St. John 17) Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, MA, (The Rev’d Canon) Rector

HEALTH CORNER BY: SOPHIA MARSHALL, PH.D DO YOU ASK ENOUGH QUESTIONS? A young couple was trying unsuccessfully for years to conceive a child. They decided to visit the doctor for assistance and possibly receive treatment for their problem. Several laboratory tests and physical examina<ons were carried out on both the husband and the wife. Eventually it was discovered that the husband was infer<le. It was suggested that it may have been the side-effect of medica<on he was using for several years. This was a total surprise to the husband, because he was never aware of the possible side-effects of the medica<on. What about you? Are you aware of the possible side-effects of your medica<ons? Have you ever read the neatly folded informa<on sheet found inside your box of medica<on? Do you ask your doctor ques<ons about the medica<on that he/she has prescribed? Do you ask the pharmacist? Do you ask the doctor if there are any alterna<ves? Or ask why that was the first choice? What are the benefits of using one medica<on instead of another? The liKle story of the couple is not meant to scare you in anyway but is aimed at encouraging you to be informed about your medica<ons. The next <me you visit your doctor, be inquisi<ve and ask ques<ons! They will be able to explain the pros and cons of taking the medica<on.

Remember, follow your doctor’s advice at all Emes.
