THE FIRST READING: READER:

A Reading from the Word of God written in the book of Isaiah Chapter 9 beginning at the 1st verse.

But there will be no gloom for those who were in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he will make glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness on them light has shined. You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. Reader: ALL:

Here ends the Reading Thanks be to God.

Psalm 27:1-9

THE EPISTLE READER:

A Reading from Paul’s 1st letter to the Corinthians Chapter 1 beginning at the 10th verse. !3

Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same purpose. For it has been reported to me by Chloe's people that there are quarrels among you, my brothers and sisters. What I mean is that each of you says, "I belong to Paul," or "I belong to Apollos," or "I belong to Cephas," or "I belong to Christ. Has Christ been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptised in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, so that no one can say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) For Christ did not send me to baptise but to proclaim the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power. For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. Reader: ALL:

Here ends the Reading Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew Glory to Christ our Saviour. Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: "Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles the people who sat in darkness have seen a !4

great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.” From that time Jesus began to proclaim, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea for they were fishermen. And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.” Immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him. Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people. The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord.

FROM THE RECTOR’S NOTEBOOK Greetings: At this time the church across the world is observing the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. As the Website of the World Council of Churches of Churches (WCC) reports, at least once a year, Christians are reminded of Jesus’ prayer for his disciples that “they may b e o n e s o t h at t h e w o r l d m ay believe” (see John 17.21). Traditionally the week of prayer is celebrated between 18-25 January, between the feasts of St Peter and St Paul. The theme for the week of prayer in 2017, "Reconciliation – the love of Christ compels us", is inspired by verses from the Second Letter to the Corinthians, chapter 5 verses 14 - 20. Today the Barbados Christian Council, (BXC) has asked clergy of the various churches to offer biddings and prayers for the fulfillment of Jesus’ wish and desire expressed in the above passage from St. John’s Gospel. On Tuesday of this week the executive of the Barbados Christian Council will gather at the Mount Tabor Moravian Church for a Day of Prayer and Reflection. The Meditations will be led by Msgr V. Harcourt Blackett of the Roman Catholic Church. Last year they were led by the Rev’d Canon Kirkley Sands, the Chaplain to Codrington College.

As we participate in the sacred liturgy today within this week in which we consider the unity of the church, we may find that the Epistle is especially instructive, as Paul addresses divisions in the Corinthian Church. Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters,[d] by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same purpose. (1 Corinthians 1: 10). In this 21st century within our ecumenical discussion and debate we see a new duty of linking the diversity among churches with the strength. In his book Crossing the Threshold of Hope, Pope John Paul II suggests we may catch a glimpse of the wealth of experience of the Holy Spirit in the midst of the variety of ways in which we worship and understand christian revelation. We can very well agree that without the vital ecumenical discussion, we may be missing what the Holy Sprit is directing us to be and to do as a church. Let us continue to pray for the Barbados Christian Council and for ecumenical dialogue with other umbrella bodies as we worship together and address boldly the challenges of daily life. Your friend and Priest, Noel A. Burke. M.A. (The Rev’d Canon) Rector !7

Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul (Wednesday January 25) Paul’s entire life can be explained in terms of one experience—his meeting with Jesus on the road to Damascus. In an instant, he saw that all the zeal of his dynamic personality was being wasted, like the strength of a boxer swinging wildly. Perhaps he had never seen Jesus, who was only a few years older. He had acquired a zealot’s hatred of all Jesus stood for, as he began to harass the Church: “…entering house after house and dragging out men and women, he handed them over for imprisonment” (Acts 8:3b). Now he himself was “entered,” possessed, all his energy harnessed to one goal—being a slave of Christ in the ministry of reconciliation, an instrument to help others experience the one Savior. One sentence determined his theology: “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting” (Acts 9:5b). Jesus was mysteriously identified with people—the loving group of people Saul had been running down like criminals. Jesus, he saw, was the mysterious fulfillment of all he had been blindly pursuing. From then on, his only work was to “present everyone perfect in Christ. “For this I labor and struggle, in accord with the exercise of his power working within me” (Colossians 1:28b-29). Join us on Wednesday evening at 7:00pm - 7:30pm for Holy Mass in thanksgiving for the Blessed Apostle, Pau.l https://www.franciscanmedia.org/conversion-of-saint-paul/
