THE FIRST READING: READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in The Book of Isaiah Chapter 60 beginning at the 1st verse
Arise, shine; for your light has come, and the glory of the LORD has risen upon you. For darkness shall cover the earth, and thick darkness the peoples; but the LORD will arise upon you, and his glory will appear over you. Nations shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn. Lift up your eyes and look around; they all gather together, they come to you; your sons shall come from far away, and your daughters shall be carried on their nurses' arms. Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and rejoice, because the abundance of the sea shall be brought to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you. A multitude of camels shall cover you, the young camels of Midian and Ephah; all those from Sheba shall come. They shall bring gold and frankincense, and shall proclaim the praise of the LORD. THE EPISTLE READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in Paul’s letter to the Ephesians Chapter 3 beginning at the 1st verse
This is the reason that I Paul am a prisoner for Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles-- for surely you have already heard of the commission of God's grace that was given me for you, and how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I wrote above in a few words, a reading of which will enable you to perceive my understanding of the mystery of Christ. In former generations this mystery was not made known to humankind, as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit: that is, the Gentiles have become fellow heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. Of this gospel I have become a servant according to the gift of God's grace that was given me by the working of his power. Although I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given to me to bring to the Gentiles the news of the boundless riches of Christ, and to make everyone see what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things; so that through the church the wisdom of God in its rich variety might now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This was in accordance with the eternal purpose that he has carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have access to God in boldness and confidence through faith in him. Reader: ALL:

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mathew Glory to Christ our Saviour. In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, "Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage." When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: 'And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.'" Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage." When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their !5
treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road. The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord

From the Rector's Notebook Greetings: Professor Patrick Regan in his classic text ‘Advent to Pentecost’ tells us that “the solemnity of the Epiphany on January 6 originated in the Christian East, and suggests that the location might have been either Egypt or Syria. ” Actually the Feast of the Epiphany is older than the Feast of the Nativity of our Lord, Christmas Day. A number of themes were caught up on the celebration of the Epiphany from as early as the end of the 2nd century AD; some still remain to this day. Regan states that in this early period, especially in Syria, those celebrating the Baptism of Jesus on January 6 understood and spoke of it as his birth— not his physical birth, but his birth in the Spirit as Son of God. It was perhaps in light of this that the Epiphany also celebrated the Baptism of our Lord. The theological and liturgical development of the celebration of the birth of Jesus was moved to December 25 and Epiphany remained an observance of Jesus’ Baptism; but there is yet more. During the 5th century Epiphany on January 6 would center entirely on the adoration of the Magi and the manifestation of Christ to all the peoples of the earth. The Baptism of the Lord being observed on the Sunday following January 6. Next week all baptized persons should make a special effort to come to Mass and make their !7
communion in thanksgiving for their baptism into Christ Jesus. According to Regan, Epiphany marks the start of the second half of Christmas Time, called the season of Epiphany. Our observance of the Feast of the Epiphany today on the First Sunday of the New Year forms part of the Christmas cycle. We have not yet exhausted our contemplation of Christ’s birth. We recall in the sacred liturgy today the Magi visiting the Christ Child and offering gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. The theological implication of the Epiphany has been captured by Paul the Apostle in his letter to the Ephesians the Gentiles have become fellow heirs, members of the same body, and sharers in the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel. Ephesians 3:6 It says in essence, that all the people of the earth have been called to be one under Christ, as he draws us to himself so that we may all adore him. May God Almighty give us his grace in this New Year; that we may do all things that please him and that worship and adoration form part of our sacred obligation. Happy New Year!

HEALTH CORNER by Sophia Marshall Ph.d Sarah: Everything is so expensive and they want me to eat healthy. I can’t understand it. Tricia: You know prevention is better than cure and tell the truth it’s much cheaper too! When the doctor tells you that the test will cost $1000, what do you do? Find the money, right? Sarah: You have a point there, you know. Well my dear friend, help me stretch these few cents. Remember I’m diabetic. Tricia: I always hear you talk about the amount of sugar in foods but remember diabetes is a condition where the body cannot properly control glucose in the body. You must always remember that carbohydrates are converted to sugars in the body. So you must control the amount of carbohydrates in your diet. Sarah: So wait you mean I should watch the bread, biscuits, fruit, milk, juices and things like that! Tricia: Yes please and you should eat high fibre foods because they tend to lower blood pressure and cholesterol, increase your blood glucose level slowly. Sarah: And I feel full when I use high fibre foods. Tricia: Exactly! The Plantation up the road has a lot of yams and sweet potatoes. And you can get breadfruits from the fellow down the road. Now look, that wouldn’t cost you much. Sarah: What about snacks? You know I like my snacks. Tricia: Leave out the chips, corn curls and sweet biscuits. Make fruits your snack. Look Sarah, pick up those little apples and I have dunks at home. Sarah: Girl, when I think about fruits, I am always thinking imported fruits. Tricia: That is why your grocery bill always give you de pressure. You know though that you can get strawberry plants from Soil Conservation Unit in St. Andrew. Sarah: Yuh lie! I must get a couple and try my hand at growing them. Tricia: We can reduce our food bill and maintain healthy lifestyles but we have to change our way of thinking.
