THE COLLECT O God, by the preaching of your apostle Paul you have caused the light of the Gospel to shine throughout the whole world: Grant, we pray, that we, having his wonderful conversion in remembrance, may show ourselves thankful to you by following his holy teaching; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. THE LESSON A Reading from the Word of God written in the Acts of the Apostles Chapter 26 beginning at the 9th verse Paul said to King Herod, "I myself was convinced that I ought to do many things in opposing the name of Jesus of Nazareth. And I did so in Jerusalem; I not only shut up many of the saints in prison, by authority from the chief priests, but when they were put to death I cast my vote against them. And I punished them often in all the synagogues and tried to make them blaspheme; and in raging fury against them, I persecuted them even to foreign cities. "Thus I journeyed to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests. At midday, O king, I saw on the way a light from heaven, brighter than the sun, shining round me and those who journeyed with me. And when we had all fallen to the ground, I heard a voice saying to me in the Hebrew language, `Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? It hurts you to kick against the goads.' I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not man's gospel. For I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it; and I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and had called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia; and again I returned to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord's brother. THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you And also with you A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew Glory to Christ our Saviour. At that time Jesus said to the twelve, "Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. Beware of men; for they will deliver you up to councils, and flog you in their synagogues, and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear testimony before them and the Gentiles. When they deliver you up, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour; for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death; and you will be hated by all for my name's sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved. The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord. From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings: This year in all the parishes across the Diocese of Barbados elections for persons to serve at Synod and on the respective Parochial Church Councils will be held. These elections are held every two years and provide an opportunity for members of the church to offer themselves, their gifts and skills to help in the work of the parish. According to paragraph 1 of Regulation D4 of the Constitution, Canons and Regulations of our Diocese Each Parochial or other District shall have a Church Council which shall consist of the

Incumbent, Assistant Clergy and the Lay Representatives and Alternate, all ex-officio, and twelve persons at least six of whom shall be elected at the Annual Meeting to hold office for a period of two years. After the six persons are elected the Incumbent then selects six other persons to comprise the required twelve. Paragraph 7 (a) of the above mentioned regulation states that “It shall be the duty of the Church Council to assist the Incumbent as he may request it in all the work of the church and to manage the local financial affairs of the church in accordance with the provisions of the Regulations�. Members of the church should also be aware as to how Church officers are chosen. Regulations D4, paragraph 15 states At the first meeting of the Church Council following the Annual Meeting the Incumbent shall appoint from among their number a Churchwarden and the Council shall elect from among their number a Churchwarden, a Secretary, a Treasurer, and such other Officers as the Council may determine. The Council shall also appoint an Auditor or Auditors who shall not be members of the Council. Serving at Synod and on the PCC both provide a wonderful opportunity for ministry and also for learning more about the church. When we think of church, we consider the worship, the hymns and prayers, the sacred liturgy and the sermon; it is also important to note that there is a

“business” side to church as well, since church is an entity within the society. As the annual meeting approaches persons must reflect on the view that God almighty may be calling you to serve His church in this way. Your friend and priest, Noel A. HEALTH CORNER: By Sophia Marshall It's a new year and you have started to pay more attention to food labels and the listed ingredients; however here are a few phrases or terms that you should be wary of: No Sugar Added No sugar added doesn’t mean a product is calorie or carbohydrate free! Remember foods, including fruits and vegetables naturally contain sugar. So although these products may not have added sugar, they still may contain natural sugars. Sugar Free Sugar-free products have less than 0.5 grams of sugars per serving, but they still contain calories and carbohydrates from other sources. Sugar free doesn’t mean a product has fewer calories than the regular version; it may have more. These products may contain sugar alcohols such as mannitol or sorbitol. Fat Free Fat-free products could be loaded with sugar, and sugarfree products could be loaded with fat. Sometimes fat-free products can contained nearly as many calories as the fullfat versions. Light The term 'light' has been used by manufacturers in reference to the flavour and not calorie count as often interpreted by the consumer. To be considered a light product, the fat content has to be 50% less than the amount found in comparable products. Remember read the labels carefully, do your research and don't be fooled!
