THE FIRST READING: READER:

A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Jeremiah Chapter 23 beginning at the 1st verse.

Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture! says the LORD. Therefore thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the shepherds who shepherd my people: It is you who have scattered my flock, and have driven them away, and you have not attended to them. So I will attend to you for your evil doings, says the LORD. Then I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the lands where I have driven them, and I will bring them back to their fold, and they shall be fruitful and multiply. I will raise up shepherds over them who will shepherd them, and they shall not fear any longer, or be dismayed, nor shall any be missing, says the LORD. The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. In his days Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And this is the name by which he will be called: "The LORD is our righteousness. Reader: ALL:

Psalm 46

THE EPISTLE READER:

A Reading from the Word of God written in Paul’s letter to the Colossians Chapter 1 beginning at the 11th verse.

May you be made strong with all the strength that comes from his glorious power, and may you be prepared to endure everything with patience, while joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light. He has rescued us from the power of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; or in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers--all things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross. Reader: ALL:

Here ends the Reading Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke Glory to Christ our Saviour.

When they came to the place that is called The Skull, they crucified Jesus there with the criminals, one on his right and one on his left. Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing." And they cast lots to divide his clothing. And the people stood by, watching; but the leaders scoffed at him, saying, "He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Messiah of God, his chosen one!” The soldiers also mocked him, coming up and offering him sour wine, and saying, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!” There was also an inscription over him, "This is the King of the Jews.” One of the criminals who were hanged there kept deriding him and saying, "Are you not the Messiah? Save yourself and us!” But the other rebuked him, saying, "Do you not fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed have been condemned justly, for we are getting what we deserve for our deeds, but this man has done nothing wrong.” Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” He replied, "Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord.

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings: We certainly have two exciting weeks ahead. Firstly we note that today is the final Sunday in the Church’s year. It is the Feast of Christ the King. We also have Advent Sunday ahead and nationally we have the culmination of events for the 50th Anniversary of Barbados’ Independence. In our Mass today we pray that Christ will reign in our hearts, homes and all institutions of our land and in our world. We pray for the fulfillment of the vision mentioned in the Revelation to John when he saw and heard the seventh angel Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Messiah, and he will reign forever and ever.” Revelation 11:15 We pray for the coming of the full reign of Christ as we move to a new year in the Church. Next Sunday is Advent Sunday and the start of a new liturgical year. In terms of the liturgical cycle we will be using Year A. This week twenty (20) persons who have been candidates since the start of Confirmation Class in February will be making final preparations for the Sacrament of Holy Confirmation which will be conferred next Sunday.

!6

Holy Confirmation is part of the process of Christian Initiation. It indicates that persons have reached a stage in which they make a public commitment. The process begins at Holy Baptism, includes Holy Confirmation and culminates when we make our communion for the first time. Those who have received the Laying-on of Hands in Confirmation, must assume a commitment to making their communion every week and developing a deep relationship with our Lord. Holy Confirmation on Advent Sunday truly marks a beginning with new hope that we, including those newly Confirmed seek to be conformed to Christ in every way. Next week Sunday will also usher in the final week of events for our Independence Celebrations, we pray for God’s continued favour over our island and that all events will carry is grace and blessing. We pray for Barbados, the land of our birth and for many the place where they have made their home. Our thanksgiving for Barbados is reflected in the way in which we uphold justice, peace, law and order and the place of Sacred Scripture. May God be our guide in our celebration of Independence, the coming Advent season and in our participation in the lives of those to be Confirmed. Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector

LET’S EAT MORE FIBER - By Dr. Sophia Marshall Dietary fiber or roughage is a type of carbohydrate that is obtained from plant sources. It isn’t digested by our bodies and passes relatively intact through the stomach, small intestine, and colon and out of the body. Fiber is classified as soluble if it dissolves in water and insoluble if it does not. Soluble fiber is found in the following: ➢

Most fruits, Barley, Oat bran, Nuts and seeds, Beans and Peas

Insoluble fiber is found in the following •

Whole wheat bread, Wheat bran, Brown rice, Whole grain cereals, Seeds, Most vegetables, Fruits

Both types of fiber have important health benefits and we should eat a variety of different plant foods to ensure that we get the greatest benefits. WHAT ARE THESE HEALTH BENEFITS? 1.

Significant reduction in risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, obesity and certain gastrointestinal diseases.

2. Increased dietary fiber in obese individuals significantly enhances weight loss. High-fiber diets tend to give a feeling of fullness for a longer time. 3. Normalizes bowel movements by increasing the weight and size of our stool and softening it. A bulky stool is easier to pass and hence decreasing chances of constipation. 4. Helps maintain bowel health by reducing the risk of developing hemorrhoids and small pouches in your colon (diverticular disease). REFERENCE 1.
