THE FIRST READING: READER:
A Reading from the Word of God written in the book of Genesis Chapter 12 beginning at the 1st verse.
Now the LORD said to Abram, "Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you. I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and the one who curses you I will curse; and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. So Abram went, as the LORD had told him; and Lot went with him. THE EPISTLE READER:
A Reading from the Word of God written in Romans Chapter 4 beginning at the 1st verse.
What then are we to say was gained by Abraham, our ancestor according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him as righteousness. Now to one who works, wages are not reckoned as a gift but as something due. But to !3
one who without works trusts him who justifies the ungodly, such faith is reckoned as righteousness. For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation. For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all of us, as it is written, "I have made you the father of many nations") -- in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. Reader: ALL:
Here ends the Reading Thanks be to God.
THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John Glory to Christ our Saviour. Now there was a Pharisee named Nicodemus, a leader of the Jews. He came to Jesus by night and said to him, "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God; for no one can do these signs that you do apart from the presence of God.” Jesus answered him, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God without being born from above.” Nicodemus said to him, "How can anyone be born after having grown old? Can one enter a second time into the mother's womb and be born?” Jesus answered, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit. What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the !4
Spirit is spirit. Do not be astonished that I said to you, 'You must be born from above.’ The wind blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” Nicodemus said to him, "How can these things be?” Jesus answered him, "Are you a teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things? "Very truly, I tell you, we speak of what we know and testify to what we have seen; yet you do not receive our testimony. If I have told you about earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. "For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. "Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord.

FROM THE RECTOR’S NOTEBOOK Greetings: We are well into our journey through the season of Lent. The season of fasting and preparation began with faithful Christians coming to the Altar in order to receive the sign of Ashes on their foreheads. Professor Patrick Regan tells us that “The oldest description of ceremonies for Wednesday of Quinquagesima week (Ash Wednesday) were compiled between 795 and 800 AD. Regan explains that an ancient liturgical text invokes the antiphon “Let us change our garments to sackcloth and ashes” and that the imposition of ashes was the liturgical acting out of the antiphon.” A still-later development he goes on to explain was the formula of distribution, “Remember, man, that you are dust and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19), taken from the Lord’s rebuke of Adam after the Fall. The Book eliminating imposition, and believe
of Common Prayer (CPWI) while “man” from the traditional formula of also introduces an alternate: “Repent, the Gospel,” from Mark 1:15.
Most liturgical theologians see this text as a moral exhortation appropriate for the beginning of Lent but with no necessary connection with imposition of ashes. What is vital for us spiritually is that we make the connection between the imposition of ashes and !6
the renewal of our baptismal vows at the Great vigil of Easter. Professor Maxwell Johnson states in his book The Rites of Christian Initiation: Their Evolution and Interpretation, that there developed in the fourth and fifth century Church a preference for celebrating the Rites of Christian Initiation at Pascha (Easter). Lent, the forty day period of fasting and prayer was the final preparation period for those who were to be baptised. Ash Wednesday therefore begins a special time of preparation for the renewal of baptismal vows at the Easter Vigil on the evening before Easter Day. It is for this reason that we take the time to delve deeper into our religion with the Wednesday evening program, by making every effort to attend Mass and ensuring that we engage in Daily Morning and Evening Prayer. All of these spiritual disciplines help in making our Easter celebration more meaningful spiritually in addition to strengthening our knowledge of God and the Church. May God’s grace be with us as we observe this Lenten Season. Your friend and Priest Noel A. Burke. M.A. (The Rev’d Canon) Rector “REPENT AND BELIEVE THE GOSPEL” MARK 1: 15

HEALTH CORNER BY: SOPHIA MARSHALL, PH.D LET'S GROW OUR OWN FOOD Does your supermarket bill keep raising your blood pressure? Always looking at the two bags in your hand and wondering if the cashier made an error? Praying that you would spend less money next month? Well here is your answer, grow your own food! Imagine if each member of our congregation planted one herb or vegetable and each week shared with the persons sitting around them. This practice would eventually make a dent in your grocery bills. Yes, you are thinking it's a great idea but who has the time or possibly the space. Start with one herb like thyme that likes full sun but not much water, it doesn't have to be watered every day. In terms of space, use a container that is around the house, there is no need to run off and buy a fancy pot. Here are some creative idea for planters: •
That old vase or cup that you broke last Christmas but haven't thrown out yet.
•
The old colander which belonged to your mother; it’s perfect for planting, it already has holes for drainage.
•
Your old shoe organiser that have been in the shed for ages.
