THE COLLECT Almighty God, you know that we have no power in ourselves to help ourselves: Keep us both outwardly in our bodies and inwardly in our souls, that we may be defended from all adversities which may happen to the body, and from all evil thoughts which may assault and hurt the soul; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE FIRST READING: READER:

A Reading from the Word of God written in the book of Isaiah Chapter 55 beginning at the 1st verse.

Ho, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you that have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; listen, so that you may live. I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast, sure love for David. See, I made him a witness to the peoples, a leader and commander for the peoples. See, you shall call nations that you do not know, and nations that do not know you shall run to you, because of the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you. Seek the LORD while he may be found, call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake their way, and the unrighteous their !3

thoughts; let them return to the LORD, that he may have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. Reader: ALL: PSALM 63

Here ends the Reading Thanks be to God. Deus, Deus meus

1. O God, you are my God; eagerly I seek you; * my soul thirsts for you, my flesh faints for you, as in a barren and dry land where there is no water. 2. Therefore I have gazed upon you in your holy place, * that I might behold your power and your glory. 3. For your loving-kindness is better than life itself; * my lips shall give you praise. 4. So will I bless you as long as I live * and lift up my hands in your Name. 5. My soul is content, as with marrow and fatness, * and my mouth praises you with joyful lips, 6. When I remember you upon my bed, * and meditate on you in the night watches. 7. For you have been my helper, * and under the shadow of your wings I will rejoice. 8. My soul clings to you; * your right hand holds me fast. V. R.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen

THE EPISTLE READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the first letter of Paul to the Corinthians Chapter 10 beginning at the 1st verse. I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud, and all passed through the sea, and all were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank from the spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was Christ. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them, and they were struck down in the wilderness. Now these things occurred as examples for us, so that we might not desire evil as they did. Do not become idolaters as some of them did; as it is written, "The people sat down to eat and drink, and they rose up to play. We must not indulge in sexual immorality as some of them did, and twentythree thousand fell in a single day. We must not put Christ to the test, as some of them did, and were destroyed by serpents. And do not complain as some of them did, and were destroyed by the destroyer. These things happened to them to serve as an example, and they were written down to instruct us, on whom the ends of the ages have come. So if you think you are standing, watch out that you do not fall. No testing has overtaken you that is not common to everyone. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tested beyond your strength, but with the testing he will also provide the way out so that you may be able to endure it. Reader: ALL:

Here ends the Reading Thanks be to God

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke Glory to Christ our Saviour. At that very time there were some present who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. He asked them, "Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did. Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them--do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did.” Then he told this parable: "A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. So he said to the gardener, 'See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?’ He replied, 'Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it. If it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’" The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord.

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings: We have completed the second week of our lenten program as we examine the liturgy of the mass. The Eucharist that we attend - or perhaps in some cases do not attend, is as one writer puts it the jewel in the crown of anglicanism. We say the words and repeat the various texts not simply by rote; but deeply and meaningfully. Sessions such as those taking place in our parish this Lent help us to understand the meaning of what we do when we carry out Jesus’ command to “do this in remembrance of me”. (1 Corinthians 11: 24, Luke 22:19) It is vital to have that understanding that we come to mass to worship God and as mentioned before we can agree with Danish theologian and professor Søren Kierkegaard (1813- 1855) that God is the audience as we worship together. Liturgy includes texts, gestures, symbols, signs we must be prepared for all of these. We need both faith and knowledge if we are to grow in understanding in the mysteries of God. In terms of our lenten christian education and spiritual program, I am certainly having an exciting time hearing the questions and sharing in the responses of those who are taking the time to attend. This past week we looked at the history and theological development of the Preparatory Rite inclusive of the opening sentences, the Kyries and the historical and liturgical use of the Gloria in !7

excelsis and the way in which collects are constructed. We spent much time discussing the collect and shared that there should be only one collect in the mass, that each collect petitions for one thing at a time and that it reflects the readings and intentions for that particular occasion. Participants were made aware of Martin Dudley’s book The Collect in Anglican Liturgy: Texts & Sources, 1549-1989 and that the form of the collect can be used when we are asked at times to offer prayer for various events. This week, God willing, we shall continue by examining and discussing the Ministry of the Liturgy of the Word and the way in which it calls us to repentance and to action as we seek to live the Christian example in the world. Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector

HEALTH CORNER BY: DR. SOPHIA MARSHALL

DO YOU ASK ENOUGH QUESTIONS? A young couple was trying unsuccessfully for years to conceive a child. They decided to visit the doctor for assistance and possibly receive treatment for their problem. Several laboratory tests and physical examinations were carried out on both the husband and the wife. Eventually it was discovered that the husband was infertile. It was suggested that it may have been the side-effect of medication he was using for several years. This was a total surprise to the husband, because he was never aware of the possible side-effects of the medication. What about you? Are you aware of the possible sideeffects of your medications? Have you ever read the neatly folded information sheet found inside your box of medication? Do you ask your doctor questions about the medication that he/she has prescribed? Do you ask the pharmacist? Do you ask the doctor if there are any alternatives? Or ask why that was the first choice? What are the benefits of using one medication instead of another? The little story of the couple is not meant to scare you in anyway but is aimed at encouraging you to be informed about your medications. The next time you visit your doctor, be inquisitive and ask questions! They will be able to explain the pros and cons of taking the medication.

REMEMBER

FOLLOW YOUR DOCTOR’S ADVICE AT ALL TIMES.

LITURGICAL COLOURS W = White; R = Red; P = Purple; G = Green Our celebration of the Eucharist incorporates a variety of words, signs, symbols, and actions. One of these symbols is colour. Liturgical colours symbolize the character of the different feasts and seasons of the Church year. These colours are used primarily in the priest’s sacred clothing (vestments). They are also used on banners and other church decorations.

Meaning of the Liturgical colours Match the initial of the colour to the description: 1.
