THE COLLECT Almighty God, you alone can bring into order the unruly wills and affections of sinners: Grant your people grace to love what you command and desire what you promise; that among the swift and varied changes of the world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

!THE LESSON !A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Ezekiel Chapter 37 beginning at the 1st verse !The hand of the LORD was upon me, and he brought me out by

the Spirit of the LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley; it was full of bones. And he led me round among them; and behold, there were very many upon the valley; and lo, they were very dry. And he said to me, "Son of man, can these bones live?" And I answered, "O Lord GOD, thou knowest." Then he said to me, "Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, 'Our bones are dried up, and our hope is lost; we are clean cut off.' Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I will open your graves, and raise you from your graves, O my people; and I will bring you home into the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves, and raise you from your graves, O my people. And I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land; then you

!3

shall know that I, the LORD, have spoken, and I have done it, says the LORD."

!Reader: Here ends the Reading. ALL: be to God. !PSALM 130 DeThanks profundis

1.Out of the depths have I called you, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice;* let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication. 2.If you, Lord, were to note what is done amiss, * O Lord, who could stand? 3.For there is forgiveness with you;* therefore you shall be feared. 4.I wait for the lord; my soul waits for him;* in his word is my hope. 5.My soul waits for the Lord, more than watchmen for the
morning, * more than watchmen for the morning. 6.O Israel, wait for the Lord, * for with the Lord there is mercy; 7.With him there is plenteous redemption, * and he shall
redeem Israel from all their sins. Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen.

THE EPISTLE A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter to the Romans Chapter 6 beginning at the 16th verse. Do you not know that if you yield yourselves to any one as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once yielded your members to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now yield your members to righteousness for sanctification. When you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But then what return did you get from the things of which you are now ashamed? The end of those things is death. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the return you get is sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John Glory to Christ our Saviour. At that time

!

Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles off, and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother. When Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, while Mary sat in the

!5

house. Martha said to Jesus, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. And even now I know that whatever you ask from God, God will give you." Jesus said to her, "Your brother will rise again." Martha said to him, "I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day." Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?" She said to him, "Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, he who is coming into the world." When she had said this, she went and called her sister Mary, saying quietly, "The Teacher is here and is calling for you." And when she heard it, she rose quickly and went to him. Now Jesus had not yet come to the village, but was still in the place where Martha had met him. When the Jews who were with her in the house, consoling her, saw Mary rise quickly and go out, they followed her, supposing that she was going to the tomb to weep there. Then Mary, when she came where Jesus was and saw him, fell at his feet, saying to him, "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was deeply moved in spirit and troubled; and he said, "Where have you laid him?" They said to him, "Lord, come and see." Jesus wept. So the Jews said, "See how he loved him!" But some of them said, "Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?" Then Jesus, deeply moved again, came to the tomb; it was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. Jesus said, "Take away the stone." Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, "Lord, by this time there will be an odor, for he has been dead four days." Jesus said to her, "Did I not tell you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?" So they took away the stone. And Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, "Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me. I knew that thou hearest me always, but I have said this on account of the people standing by, that they may believe that thou didst send me." When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, "Laz'arus, come out." The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with bandages, and his face wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, "Unbind him, and let him go." The Gospel of Christ

Praise to Christ our Lord. !6

! From the Rector’s Notebook !Greetings, !As the season of Lent draws to a close we are reminded as to its meaning and purpose as we prepare for the Great Paschal Vigil on the evening before Easter Day.

!We must make a note of this very important service as it

gives us an opportunity to participate in the preparation and lighting of the Paschal Candle and the Renewal of our Baptismal Vows, which is the end of our Lenten fast and discipline.

!Professor Patrick Regan, OSB, reminds us that the Holy Saturday ceremonies commemorate the path and passage of our Lord from this world to the Father.

!Services are not ranked in order of importance; but if they were, the Great Paschal Vigil on the evening before Easter Day would be at the top of the list.

!Next Sunday is Palm Sunday, the beginning of Holy Week.

Never before in the history of humanity has a week had such a tremendous impact on the lives of people in the world.

!Holy Week has indeed altered the lives of millions of persons across the ages, and has captured the imagination even of those outside the Christian faith.

!We must all make the effort to attend Mass and receive our palm cross, not only that, but we can bring along a friend and relative.

!As slight as it may seem, that palm cross is tremendously symbolic, for it takes our minds back to Sunday.

the first Palm

!The entry of Jesus into Jerusalem was a sign of hope for a

people who were going through a very difficult time as

!7

they saw their society and culture being impacted by challenging economic times.

!The cross of Palm Sunday even with shouts of “Alleluia to the Son of David”, gave hope to those who were looking for the consolation of their people.

!We must see the cross that we will be receiving next

week as a sign of hope as we pass through this valley in our national economic life and as we pray for God’s guidance on those families so far effected.

!As we think liturgically and spiritually of Holy Week, let

us call to mind Jesus’ lifting up, or glorification in three ways, the glory of the Palms, the glory of crucifixion and the glory of resurrection. Let us note that in all of these it is resurrection that abides forever.

!May

God give us his grace as we prepare for the ceremonies of the Holy Week and the celebration of the resurrection.

HEALTH CORNER LET’S EAT MORE FIBER Dietary fiber or roughage is a type of carbohydrate that is obtained from plant sources. It isn’t digested by our bodies and passes relatively intact through the stomach, small intestine, and colon and out of the body. Fiber is classified as soluble if it dissolves in water and insoluble if it does not. Soluble fiber is found in the following: ➢ Most fruits

➢ Nuts and seeds

Barley

Oat bran

➢ Beans and Peas

Insoluble fiber is found in the following • Whole wheat bread •

Wheat bran

Brown rice

Whole grain cereals

Seeds

Most vegetables

Both types of fiber have important health benefits and we should eat a variety of different plant foods to ensure that we get the greatest benefits.

!

WHAT ARE THESE HEALTH BENEFITS? 1. Significant reduction in risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, diabetes, obesity and certain gastrointestinal diseases. 2.

Increased dietary fiber in obese individuals significantly enhances weight loss. High-fiber diets tend to give a feeling of fullness for a longer time.

3.

Normalizes bowel movements by increasing the weight and size of our stool and softening it. A bulky stool is easier to pass and hence decreasing chances of constipation.

4.

Helps maintain bowel health by reducing the risk of developing hemorrhoids and small pouches in your colon (diverticular disease).
