!THE COLLECT
Almighty God, whose blessed Son was led by the Spirit into the wilderness and was tempted by Satan: Come quickly to help us who are assaulted by many temptations and, as you know the weaknesses of each of us, let each one find you mighty to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
!THE LESSON !A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Genesis Chapter 2 beginning at the 4th verse !In the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,
when no plant of the field was yet in the earth and no herb of the field had yet sprung up -- for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was no man to till the ground; but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground -- then the LORD God formed man of dust from the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. And the LORD God planted a garden in Eden, in the east; and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground the LORD God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food, the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, "You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you
!3
shall die." And the man and his wife were both naked, and were not ashamed. Now the serpent was more subtle than any other wild creature that the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, "Did God say, `You shall not eat of any tree of the garden'?" And the woman said to the serpent, "We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden; but God said, `You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.'" But the serpent said to the woman, "You will not die. For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil." So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate; and she also gave some to her husband, and he ate. Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves aprons.
! Reader: Here ends the Reading. ALL: Thanks be to God. !PSALM 51: 1-13 Miserere mei, Deus
1.Have mercy on me, O God, according to your loving- kindness;* in your great compassion blot out my offenses. 2.Wash me through and through from my wickedness* and cleanse me from my sin. 3.For I know my transgressions, * and my sin is ever before me. 4.Against you only have I sinned* and done what is evil in your sight. 5.And so you are justified when you speak* and upright in your judgement. 6.Indeed, I have been wicked from my birth, * a sinner from my mother's womb. 7.For behold, you look for truth deep within me, * and will make me understand wisdom secretly.
!4
8.Purge me from my sin, and I shall be pure;* wash me, and I shall be clean indeed. 9.Make me hear of joy and gladness, * that the body you have broken may rejoice. 10.Hide your face from my sins * and blot out all my iniquities. 11.Create in me a clean heart, O God, * and renew a right spirit within me. 12.Cast me not away from your presence* and take not your holy Spirit from me. 13.Give me the joy of your saving help again* and sustain me with your bountiful Spirit.
!
Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen.
!! THE EPISTLE
A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter to the Romans Chapter 5 beginning at the 12th verse. Therefore as sin came into the world through one man and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all men sinned -- sin indeed was in the world before the law was given, but sin is not counted where there is no law. Yet death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those whose sins were not like the transgression of Adam, who was a type of the one who was to come. But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man's trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift in the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the effect of that one man's sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brings justification. If, because of one man's trespass, death reigned
!5
through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. Then as one man's trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one man's act of righteousness leads to acquittal and life for all men. For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by one man's obedience many will be made righteous.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew Glory to Christ our Saviour.
!
At that time Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to
be tempted by the devil. And he fasted forty days and forty nights, and afterward he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread." But he answered, "It is written, `Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'" Then the devil took him to the holy city, and set him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, `He will give his angels charge of you,' and `On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.'" Jesus said to him, "Again it is written, `You shall not tempt the Lord your God.'" Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain, and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them; and he said to him, "All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me." Then Jesus said to him, "Begone, Satan! for it is written, `You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.'" Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and ministered to him.

From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings
!
Professor Patrick Regan tells us that the purpose and character of Lent are entirely derived from the great festival for which it prepares.
!
The Pasch (Easter) is not only an annual celebration of the passion and passage of Christ, but is for Christians of the fourth and fifth centuries the yearly reminder of their own incorporation into the paschal event through baptism.
!
This informs us that the journey that we make from Ash-Wednesday with the sign of ashes is the start of our preparation for the renewal of Baptismal Vows at the Great Vigil of Easter, which is observed on the Saturday evening between Good Friday and Easter Day.
!
Within the Christian Church we have to be very careful not to dissociate the events surrounding our salvation; we misunderstand so much when we do this.
!
We must rather see the connectedness between all of these events in order to catch a glimpse of what our Lord does for us in the Paschal Mystery, which we in turn seek to ritualise when we worship.
!
The symbol of ashes on our brow as the Book of Common Prayer tells us is sign of our commitment to renew our lives in the Paschal Mystery.
!
From ancient times as persons prepared for baptism; they would live sparingly as a sign of interior spiritual growth and development.
!
!7
The self sacrificing nature of Lent is not an addition to our christians lives; but forms part of our devotion to our Lord who himself would sacrifice himself for us.
!
Indeed Professor Regan states that the program of Lent, really consists in full ecclesial application to the whole life of faith with a view to celebrating its source in the whole paschal mystery.
!
We must take the Lenten fast seriously as we seek to grow in Christ. This fast, as Pope Leo the Great said as far back as the the fifth century must be sacramental.
!
By this he means that there is both outward and inward movement, perhaps as suggested by the hymn #6 “Now that the daylight fills the sky”. The pertinent verse says
!
O may our inmost hearts be pure, from thoughts of folly kept secure, and pride of sinful flesh subdued through sparing use of daily food.
!
Our Lenten discipline then is more that external and marks our eagerness to grow spiritually year by year.
!
May God almighty bless us as we look towards the Great Vigil of Easter and as we prepare to celebrate the Easter Faith by renewal of our Baptismal Vows.
! Your friend and priest, ! !

Health Corner DO YOU HAVE HYPERTENSION? Hypertension is defined as having a resting systolic blood pressure (SBP) ≥ 140 mmHg and/ or diastolic blood pressure (DBP) ≥ 90mm Hg, taking antihypertensive medication, or being told by a physician or other health professional on at least two occasions that your blood pressure is high. It leads to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, heart failure, peripheral artery disease and chronic kidney disease. The risk of cardiovascular disease doubles with every increase in SDP of 20 mm Hg or DBP of 10 mm Hg. WHAT CAN YOU DO ABOUT IT? Modify your lifestyle! Here’s how: ❖ Increase physical activity ❖ Lose weight (if needed) ❖ A DASH eating plan: ✓ diet rich in fruits and vegetables ✓ low-fat dairy products with a reduced content of saturated and total fat (DASH - Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension) ❖ Salt reduction (no more than 2.4 g sodium per day) ❖ Moderation of alcohol consumption (Source: ACSM’s Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription, 8th
Edition) Next Week: Exercise Prescription for individuals with hypertension
