THE LITURGY OF THE PALMS All remain standing for the Gospel The Lord be with you. And also with you. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark Glory to Christ our Saviour.
And when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Beth'phage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, and said to them, "Go into the village opposite you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat; untie it and bring it. If any one says to you, `Why are you doing this?' say, `The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.'" And they went away, and found a colt tied at the door out in the open street; and they untied it. And those who stood there said to them, "What are you doing, untying the colt?" And they told them what Jesus had said; and they let them go. And they brought the colt to Jesus, and threw their garments on it; and he sat upon it. And many spread their garments on the road, and others spread leafy branches which they had cut from the fields. And those who went before and those who followed cried out, "Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is coming! Hosanna in the highest!" And he entered Jerusalem, and went into the temple; and when he had looked round at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve. This is the Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord. LECTORS AT MASS TODAY 6:15 a.m.

THE COLLECT Almighty and everliving God, in your tender love for the human race you sent your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ to take upon Him our nature, and to suffer death upon the cross, giving us the example of His great humility: Mercifully grant that we may walk in the way of His suffering, and also share in His resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. THE LESSON A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Isaiah Chapter 45 beginning at the 21st verse Thus says the Lord, “Declare and present your case; let them take counsel together! Who told this long ago? Who declared it of old? Was it not I, the LORD? And there is no other god besides me, a righteous God and a Saviour; there is none besides me. "Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other. By myself I have sworn, from my mouth has gone forth in righteousness a word that shall not return: `To me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.’ "Only in the LORD, it shall be said of me, are righteousness and strength; to him shall come and be ashamed, all who were incensed against him. In the LORD all the offspring of Israel shall triumph and glory." Reader: ALL:
Here ends the Reading. Thanks be to God.
PSALM 22: 1-11 Deus, Deus meus. 1. My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?* and are so far from my cry and from the words of my distress? 2. O my God, I cry in the daytime, but you do not answer;* by night as well, but I find no rest. 3. Yet you are the Holy One, * enthroned upon the praises of Israel.
!4
4. Our forefathers put their trust in you; * they trusted, and you delivered them. 5. They cried out to you and were delivered;* they trusted in you and were not put to shame. 6. But as for me, I am a worm and no man, * scorned by all and despised by the people. 7. All who see me laugh me to scorn; * they curl their lips and wag their heads, saying, 8. "He trusted in the Lord; let him deliver him; * let him rescue him, if he delights in him." 9. Yet you are he who took me out of the womb, * and kept me safe upon my mother's breast. 10. I have been entrusted to you ever since I was born;* you were my God when I was still in my mother’s womb. 11. Be not far from me, for trouble is near,* and there is none to help. Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen.
THE EPISTLE A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter to the Philippians Chapter 2 beginning at the 5th verse. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form he humbled himself and

became obedient unto death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. THE PASSION GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MARK dramatized from the booklet provided From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings The Liturgical cycle has brought us to Holy week. Today is Palm Sunday the beginning of the week that changed the course of human history and indeed religious and philosophical thought. Indeed the events that we call to mind this week in our sacred rituals have had an impact not only on the western world; but on human development and hope even in the darkest hour of human history. On Palm Sunday the conquering Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, (Revelation 5:5) rides triumphantly into Jerusalem; not as the victor riding in to Rome after perhaps vanquishing the enemies of the state; but into Jerusalem, humble and riding upon a donkey. The words and actions of Jesus have been recorded for us in sacred scripture and as often as we read these remarkably simple words, they remain as fresh as if we were hearing them for the first time.
!6
On the Thursday of the week, Jesus would share a meal with the disciples and in that simple mealsharing exercise would give to the world the sacrament of Holy Communion. That sacred rite would be the means by which we would recall his death and resurrection which we will contemplate this week. Paul the Apostles tells us For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes. (1 Corinthians 11: 26) This eucharistic meal must be most meaningful to us. As we live, we must in faith seek greater understanding as to the meaning of this meal in our daily lives as we interact and engage in financial, economic, social and other enterprises of human life. The glorification of our lord which we observe from Good Friday to Easter day and beyond is of course the observance of our Lord’s transitus from this world to life eternal. We are reminded that the Good Friday Liturgy is not a funeral rite; but part of the commemoration of Jesus’ words - and I, when I am lifted up from the earth will draw all people to myself - this lifting up must be seen to be extended to the resurrection, ascension and the coming of the Holy spirit. Let us keep all of these things in mind this week and more so, let us make every effort to attend and participate in the sacred rites of Holy Week in order to enhance our understanding of what God almighty has done for us in Christ.

HEALTH CORNER Every Barbadian at some time in their lives has been advised to take garlic for some ailment. However, are there any benefits to incorporating garlic in your diet? Let’s take a look at some scientific findings: ➢ Garlic contains a sulphur compound known as allicin, which is responsible for the distinct garlic smell. Allicin enters the body from the digestive tract and travels throughout the body, where it exerts its potent biological effects.1 ➢ Garlic is low in calories and very rich in Vitamin C, Vitamin B6 and Manganese. It also contains trace amounts of various other nutrients.2 ➢ Garlic supplementation is known to boost the function of the immune system. A study found that a high dose of garlic extract (2.56 grams per day) can reduce the number of days sick with cold or flu by 61%.3 ➢ Human studies have found garlic supplementation to have a significant impact on reducing blood pressure in people with high blood pressure.4 ➢ Garlic supplementation seems to reduce total and LDL cholesterol, particularly in those who have high cholesterol. HDL cholesterol and triglycerides do not seem to be affected.5 REFERENCES 1.
