THE FIRST READING: READER:
A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Isaiah Chapter 50 beginning at the 4th verse.
The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens-- wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backward. I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. The Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. It is the Lord GOD who helps me; who will declare me guilty? Reader: ALL: Psalm 31:9-16
Here ends the Reading Thanks be to God. Page 504
THE EPISTLE READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in Philippians Chapter 2 beginning at the 5th verse. !3
Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death-- even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Reader: ALL:

THE PASSION OF OUR LORD ACCORDING TO MATTHEW Please see Passion Reading on a separate sheet From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings: During Holy Week the Church bids us to walk just that extra mile as we recall the final week of our Lord’s earthly life and his eventual glorification in the crucifixion and resurrection. Today is Palm Sunday when all faithful people are required to make the procession to receive a palm cross. The palm cross ought to be placed in a prominent location in the home as a symbol of Christ’s presence. This year the church choir will be presenting a Sacred Cantata “Olivet to Calvary” which was composed by John Henry Maunder. It recalls some of the incidents in the last days of the Saviour's life on earth. !4
It is part of the religious offering in our parish. There is no admission and we are invited to attend and to bring along our relatives and friends. Wednesday evening in the St. Michael’s Cathedral, the Bishop and clergy will celebrate the Mass together. This is called the Chrism Mass in which the Bishop will bless the oils to be used in the Diocese until next Holy Week. At that service the Bishop and clergy will reflect on the call of God to ordained ministry and the Lay Eucharistic Ministers will renew their promises. We return to our parish on Maundy Thursday for Mass of the Lord’s Supper. We enter into the Paschal Triduum; that is three precious days in which we recall Jesus’ path and passage from this world to the Father. (John 13:3) We remember that it was the night before the crucifixion, the night in which he was betrayed that our Lord gave to the entire world the gift of the Sacrament of Holy Communion. All confirmed persons ought to make their communion on the evening of Maundy Thursday. On Good Friday we reflect on the meaning of the crucifixion of Jesus. This is not a sad and mournful day; for our Saviour willing gave his life in order that we may live eternally. One of the forgotten events is the liturgy of the Great Vigil of Easter. This is one of the most important services of the Christian Year. We must not shy away from it as it allows us to celebrate our baptism into Christ and to look towards Easter Day. It also brings the Paschal Triduum to an end. !5
We look forward with eager joy to Easter; but before we reach there let us walk with Jesus from Palm Sunday to the Great Easter Vigil so that we may deepen faith and have a better understating of our Lord’s sacrificial glorification. HEALTH CORNER BY: SOPHIA MARSHALL, PH.D Every day we are vigorously bombarded by the weight loss industry and health professionals to lose weight through dieting. It is constantly in your face that you can achieve health and happiness by some new fad diet. There is a subliminal message of that you could look like the size 6 model, wearing the skinny jeans and mid-riff blouse, on the magazine cover. To be successful at a diet, one must learn to ignore or distrust inner signals of hunger, appetite and instead depend on external references, such as foods allowed/ not allowed, suggested frequency of eating, and weighed or measured portion sizes. This focus on diet plans and weight loss is referred to as the 'diet mentality'. Associated with this mentality is weight obsession, poor self-image, disordered eating patterns, disordered lifestyles and excessive or inadequate exercise. It is well documented that continued dieting can result in inadequate nutrition, fatigue, weakness, sudden death from cardiac arrhythmia and gallstones. In a nutshell, repeated unsuccessful attempts at long-term weight loss can increase health problems. REFERENCES Ernsberger P, Haskew P.
