THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke Glory to Christ our Saviour. After he had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. When he had come near Bethphage and Bethany, at the place called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of the disciples, saying, "Go into the village ahead of you, and as you enter it you will find tied there a colt that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, 'Why are you untying it?' just say this, 'The Lord needs it.’" So those who were sent departed and found it as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, "Why are you untying the colt?” They said, "The Lord needs it.” Then they brought it to Jesus; and after throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. As he rode along, people kept spreading their cloaks on the road. As he was now approaching the path down from the Mount of Olives, the whole multitude of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the deeds of power that they had seen, saying, "Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven, and glory in the highest heaven!” Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, order your disciples to stop.” He answered, "I tell you, if these were silent, the stones would shout out. The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord. !3
THE COLLECT Almighty and everliving God, in Your tender love for the human race you sent your Son our Savior Jesus Christ to take our flesh and suffer death upon a cruel cross. May we follow the example of His great humility, and share in the glory of His resurrection; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. THE FIRST READING: READER:
A Reading from the Word of God written in the book of Isaiah Chapter 50 beginning at the 4th verse.
The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of a teacher, that I may know how to sustain the weary with a word. Morning by morning he wakens-- wakens my ear to listen as those who are taught. The Lord GOD has opened my ear, and I was not rebellious, I did not turn backward. I gave my back to those who struck me, and my cheeks to those who pulled out the beard; I did not hide my face from insult and spitting. The Lord GOD helps me; therefore I have not been disgraced; therefore I have set my face like flint, and I know that I shall not be put to shame; he who vindicates me is near. Who will contend with me? Let us stand up together. Who are my adversaries? Let them confront me. It is the Lord GOD who helps me; who will declare me guilty? Reader: ALL:
Here ends the Reading Thanks be to God.
Psalm 31 In te, Domine, speravi 9. Have mercy on me, O LORD, for I am in trouble; * my eye is consumed with sorrow, and also my throat and my belly. 10. For my life is wasted with grief, and my years with sighing; * my strength fails me because of affliction, and my bones are consumed. 11. I have become a reproach to all my enemies and even to my !4
neighbors, a dismay to those of my acquaintance; * when they see me in the street they avoid me. 12. I am forgotten like a dead man, out of mind; * I am as useless as a broken pot. 13. For I have heard the whispering of the crowd; fear is all around; * they put their heads together against me; they plot to take my life. 14. But as for me, I have trusted in you, O LORD. * I have said, "You are my God. 15. My times are in your hand; * rescue me from the hand of my enemies, and from those who persecute me. 16. Make your face to shine upon your servant, * and in your loving-kindness save me." V. R.
Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen
THE EPISTLE READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the letter of Paul to the Philippians Chapter 2 beginning at the 5th verse. Let the same mind be in you that was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God as something to be exploited, but emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death-- even death on a cross. Therefore God also highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. !5

THE PASSION GOSPEL The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke (booklet provided)
From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings: We have come to the start of the most significant week on the Christian calendar. Today is Palm Sunday the start of Holy Week when we recall the tremendous events that brought christianity into being. Holy Mother Church is asking of her children that we revise our calendars and timetables in order to participate in the liturgy observing that one event, the exaltation of the Son of God as he passes from death to life eternal. The significance of the week beings on Thursday of this week - Maundy Thursday when we enter into the Paschal Triduum. Three days in which we observe as Professor Patrick Regan, OSB, tells us the departure and the return of the Bridegroom. (Mark 2:19) !6
The liturgy beginning on the evening of Maundy Thursday ends with the Great Vigil of Easter and includes the contemplation of Jesus being lifted high upon the cross in order that he may embrace us all. With some adjustment in our schedules we can together make this journey from Palm Sunday to Pasch - Easter Sunday together. Professor Regan explains in an article entitled “Three Days and Forty Days” that it is the Paschal Triduum that prepares us to celebrate the Pasch. This is a most solemn time for the church we recall Jesus’ final words and actions. These would have such impact that across time, geographical location and history the world would pause and pay attention. Here in our parish we are all being encouraged to attend the evening liturgy on Maundy Thursday the mass is only celebrated in the evening on this day as we recall the final meal Jesus held with his disciples before his departure. We have a choice of two services on Good Friday and then we should all gather for the Great Vigil of Easter on the evening of Holy Saturday as the Triduum ends and we eagerly await the celebration of Easter Day with joy and thanksgiving. Dennis G. Michno tells us that the rites of Holy Week are ancient and by nature different from the celebrations of the rest of the Church Year. He states that they are meant to be different in order to focus the attention of people on the mysteries being celebrated during this sacred time. !7
Let us make the necessary adjustments so as to participate in the liturgy so that our Easter observance may be for us a deeply spiritual celebration in which we recommit ourselves to the work of God. Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector

As Jesus was riding into Jerusalem people waved branches of palm to show how happy they were. Others were joyfully praising God singing “Hosanna”, “Blessings to the King”, “Son of David” and “You come in the name of the Lord”. Some people even spread clothes on the road for him.
