!THE COLLECT
Everlasting God, you have ordained and constituted in a wonderful order the ministries of angels and mortals. Mercifully grant that, as your holy angels always serve and worship you in heaven, so by your appointment they may help and defend us here on earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
!THE FIRST READING: !READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Genesis Chapter 10 beginning at the 17 verse ! th
Jacob left Beer-sheba, and went toward Haran. And he came to a certain place, and stayed there that night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep. And he dreamed that there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven; and behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it! And behold, the LORD stood above it and said, "I am the LORD, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your descendants; and your descendants shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south; and by you and your descendants shall all the families of the earth bless themselves. Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done that of which I have spoken to you." Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, "Surely the LORD is in this place; and I did not know it." And he was afraid, and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven."

PSALM 103: 19 - 22
19 20
The Lord has set his throne in heaven, * and his kingship has dominion over all. Bless the Lord, you angels of his, you mighty ones who do his bidding, * and hearken to the voice of his word.
21
Bless the Lord, all you his hosts, * you ministers of his who do his will.
22
Bless the Lord, all you works of his, in all places of his dominion; * bless the Lord, O my soul. Glory to the Father, and to the Son;* and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:* and shall be forever. Amen

THE EPISTLE A Reading from the Word of God written in the Revelation to John Chapter 12 beginning at the 7th verse
!
Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they were defeated and there was no longer any place for them in heaven. And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world -- he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, "Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God. And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death. Rejoice then, O heaven and you that dwell therein! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!"

! ! A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Glory to Christ our Saviour.
At that time Jesus saw Nathan'a-el coming to him, and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!" Nathan'ael said to him, "How do you know me?" Jesus answered him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." Nathan'a-el answered him, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!" Jesus answered him, "Because I said to you, I saw you under the fig tree, do you believe? You shall see greater things than these." And he said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.".

FROM THE RECTOR’S NOTEBOOK
!Greetings: !
Tomorrow Monday September 29 is the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels.
!
This is a major feast day for our Diocese with our Cathedral being dedicated to the glory of God and in memory of St. Michael and All Angels.
!
Angels are depicted in sacred art as supernatural beings, often painted in humanoid form with feathered wings on their backs and halos around their heads.
!
Indeed the English word “angel” comes from the Greek ἄγγελος ángelos which means messenger. It carries the notion of a being who carries messages from God almighty to his human subjects.
!
Research suggests that the term seems to have its origins in ancient Persian mythical writings and so the Jewish religion may have picked up the understanding of these celestial beings from their contact with Persian religion after the exile.
!
Whenever we read the sacred texts Abrahamic religions e.g. Judaism, Christianity and Islam, we tend to come across these benevolent beings who act as intermediaries between heaven and earth.
!
The Old Testament uses the terms: such as mal'āk̠ 'ĕlōhîm; messenger of God, mal'āk̠ YHWH; messenger of the Lord, bənē 'ĕlōhîm; sons of God and haqqôd̠əšîm; the holy ones, to refer to beings traditionally interpreted as angels.
!
Daniel is the first biblical figure to refer to individual angels by name, mentioning Gabriel (God's primary
!6
messenger) in Daniel 9:21 and Michael (the holy fighter) in Daniel 10:13.
!
Christianity would have inherited the belief in angels from the Jewish Religion. There is identification of individual angelic messengers: Gabriel, Michael, Raphael, Uriel, and Lucifer who is considered to be a naughty angel.
!
Judaeo-Christian tradition has also recognised nine orders of angels Seraphim, Cherubim, Thrones, Dominions, Virtues, Powers, Archangels, Principalities and Angels.
!
Islam is clear on the nature of angels as messengers of God. They are mentioned many times in the Qur'an and Hadith. Believing in angels is one of the six Articles of Faith for the Muslim.
!
In our understanding of the faith, God Almighty uses human beings as his messengers to carry out his will as we minister to each other.
!
Therefore in our sacred texts, hymns, prayers and rites we must always be attuned to God in order that we may carry out his bidding.
!
May God’s grace be with us, that we too may be his messengers, bearing his Word and carrying out his will.
!Your friend and priest, !! !

REDUCING YOUR PORTION SIZES Last week we dealt with the difference between serving size and portion size. Now let us look at reducing our portion sizes: ➢ Use a smaller plate Smaller plates make portions look bigger than they really are and you are likely to put less food on the plate from the start. ➢
!Never eat until you feel full
Did you know that it takes about 20 minutes for your brain to register that your stomach is full? Therefore you will stop feeling hungry long before you feel full. Filling your stomach means you are eating too much.
!
➢ Fill a third of your dinner plate with vegetables or salad Don’t pack on the starches or proteins, and then add two little pieces of lettuce to clear your conscience! Aim for a plate like this:

St. Michael the Archangel - ! Feast day - September 29th !
!
The name Michael signifies "Who is like to God?" and was the war cry of the good angels in the battle fought in heaven against satan and his followers.Holy Scripture describes St. Michael as "one of the chief princes," and leader of the forces of heaven in their triumph over the powers of hell. He has been especially honored and invoked as patron and protector by the Church from the time of the Apostles. Although he is always called "the Archangel," the Greek Fathers and many others place him over all the angels - as Prince of the Seraphim. St. Michael is the patron of grocers, mariners, paratroopers, police and sickness.!
!PRAYER
St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen..
