THE LESSON: READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the First Book of the Kings Chapter 17 beginning at the 17th verse The son of the widow of Zarephath, the mistress of the house, became ill; and his illness was so severe that there was no breath left in him. And she said to Eli'jah, "What have you against me, O man of God? You have come to me to bring my sin to remembrance, and to cause the death of my son!" And he said to her, "Give me your son." And he took him from her bosom, and carried him up into the upper chamber, where he lodged, and laid him upon his own bed. And he cried to the LORD, "O LORD my God, hast thou brought calamity even upon the widow with whom I sojourn, by slaying her son?" Then he stretched himself upon the child three times, and cried to the LORD, "O LORD my God, let this child's soul come into him again." And the LORD hearkened to the voice of Eli'jah; and the soul of the child came into him again, and he revived. And Eli'jah took the child, and brought him down from the upper chamber into the house, and delivered him to his mother; and Eli'jah said, "See, your son lives." And the woman said to Eli'jah, "Now I know that you are a man of God, and that the word of the LORD in your mouth is truth." Reader: Here ends the Reading. ALL: Thanks be to God.

Psalm 30 Exaltabo te, Domine 1 I will exalt you, O Lord, because you have lifted me up * and have not let my enemies triumph over me. 2 O Lord my God, I cried out to you, * and you restored me to health. 3 You brought me up, O Lord, from the dead; * you restored my life as I was going down to the grave. 4 Sing to the Lord, you servants of his; * give thanks for the remembrance of his holiness. 5 For his wrath endures but the twinkling of an eye, * his favor for a lifetime. 6 Weeping may spend the night, * but joy comes in the morning. 7 While I felt secure, I said, “I shall never be disturbed. * You, Lord, with your favor, made me as strong as the mountains.” 8 Then you hid your face, * and I was filled with fear. 9 I cried to you, O Lord; * I pleaded with the Lord, saying, 10 “What profit is there in my blood, if I go down to the Pit? * will the dust praise you or declare your faithfulness? 11 Hear, O Lord, and have mercy upon me; * O Lord, be my helper." 12 You have turned my wailing into dancing; * you have put off my sack-cloth and clothed me with joy. 13 Therefore my heart sings to you without ceasing; * O Lord my God, I will give you thanks for ever. Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. !

THE EPISTLE READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter to the Galatians Chapter 1 beginning at the 11th verse I would have you know, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not man's gospel. For I did not receive it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through a revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it; and I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my own age among my people, so extremely zealous was I for the traditions of my fathers. But when he who had set me apart before I was born, and had called me through his grace, was pleased to reveal his Son to me, in order that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not confer with flesh and blood, nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me, but I went away into Arabia; and again I returned to Damascus. Then after three years I went up to Jerusalem to visit Cephas, and remained with him fifteen days. But I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord's brother. (In what I am writing to you, before God, I do not lie!) Then I went into the regions of Syria and Cili'cia. And I was still not known by sight to the churches of Christ in Judea; they only heard it said, "He who once persecuted us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy." And they glorified God because of me. Reader: ALL:

THE HOLY GOSPEL Gospeller: The Lord be with you ALL: And also with you Gospeller: A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke ALL: Glory to Christ our Saviour. At that time soon afterward Jesus went to a city called Na'in, and his disciples and a great crowd went with him. As he drew near to the gate of the city, behold, a man who had died was being carried out, the only son of his mother, and she was a widow; and a large crowd from the city was with her. And when the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her and said to her, "Do not weep." And he came and touched the bier, and the bearers stood still. And he said, "Young man, I say to you, arise." And the dead man sat up, and began to speak. And he gave him to his mother. Fear seized them all; and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!" And this report concerning him spread through the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country. Gospeller: The Gospel of Christ. ALL: Praise to Christ our Lord. !

From the Rector’s Notebook: Greetings: Last Sunday in our parish we had a presentation on a new way of giving that will enable us to meet our financial commitments and reach the goals that we have set. Parish budgets are by nature generally slim, with very little room to maneuver, simply because our principle means of income is by way of stewardship and open collection. In terms of expenses there is primarily the Parish Assessment which is the first charge on any parish within our Diocese. For various reasons money matters and church have a bad name. Thankfully within our Diocesan structure there are the necessary checks and balances to ensure accountability and transparency. Expenditure in terms of parishes is generally conservative, except that in many instances we have inherited ancient, buildings that are of historical and architectural value and these have to be maintained. This at times may cause a spike in our spending; but of course it is not an annual expense. Our treasurer in a manner consistent with the Gordon Model of stewardship has put forward for us a new and interesting way that ought not to be burdensome to us and which spreads the responsibility across our parish base. !

Members can feel free to speak to Mr. Collymore for further clarification and advice on how they can assist, even in the context of the current world financial situation. We have suggestions for fund raising activities, however the aim is to accomplish what other parishes have done, that is, move to a point where such activities add to what we do rather than us having to rely on them to service our responsibilities. The beauty in the Gordon Model which is suggested by our Diocese and which was launched in our parish two years ago is that it is lay led. It is the members of the congregation with self determination making decisions as to how they want to move forward. This notion was enhanced by Dr. Wendy Sealy in the Keynote in this year’s parish conference when she used the word “team” as an acrostic. !
T.E.A.M - together everyone achieves more.
Right perspective and attitude are appropriate here, for this model does not imply or suggest a priest asking his congregation to give more; but rather a process in which we all consider ourselves as stakeholders in the work to which we are called, and our preparation to give sacrificially as a mark of our faith. Your friend and priest, Noel A. Burke, MA (The Rev’d Canon) Rector !
