THE LESSON:

READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in the Second Book of Samuel Chapter 11 beginning at the 26th verse.

When the wife of Uri'ah heard that Uri'ah her husband was dead, she made lamentation for her husband. And when the mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife, and bore him a son.

But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD. And the LORD sent Nathan to David. He came to him, and said to him, "There were two men in a certain city, the one rich and the other poor.The rich man had very many flocks and herds; but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb, which he had bought. And he brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children; it used to eat of his morsel, and drink from his cup, and lie in his bosom, and it was like a daughter to him. Now there came a traveler to the rich man, and he was unwilling to take one of his own flock or herd to prepare for the wayfarer who had come to him, but he took the poor man's lamb, and prepared it for the man who had come to him." Then David's anger was greatly kindled against the man; and he said to Nathan, "As the LORD lives, the man who has done this deserves to die; and he shall restore the lamb fourfold, because he did this thing, and because he had no pity." Nathan said to David, "You are the man. Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, `I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul;and I gave you your master's house, and your master's wives into your bosom, and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah; and if this were too little, I would add to you as much more. Why have you despised the word of the LORD, to do what is evil in his sight? You have smitten Uri'ah the Hittite with the sword, and have taken his wife to be your wife, and have slain him with the sword of the Ammonites. Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uri'ah the Hittite to be your wife.' David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD." And Nathan said to David, "The LORD also has put away your sin; you shall not die. Nevertheless, because by this deed you have utterly scorned the LORD, the child that is born to you shall die." Then Nathan went to his house.And the LORD struck the child that Uri'ah's wife bore to David, and it became sick.

10 Do not be like horse or mule, which have no understanding; * who must be fitted with bit and bridle, or else they will not stay near you.”

11 Great are the tribulations of the wicked; * but mercy embraces those who trust in the Lord.

12 Be glad, you righteous, and rejoice in the Lord; * shout for joy, all who are true of heart.

THE EPISTLE A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter to the Galatians Chapter 2 beginning at the 11th verse When Cephas came to Antioch I opposed him to his face, because he stood condemned.For before certain men came from James, he ate with the Gentiles; but when they came he drew back and separated himself, fearing the circumcision party. And with him the rest of the Jews acted insincerely, so that even Barnabas was carried away by their insincerity. But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Cephas before them all, "If you, though a Jew, live like a Gentile and not like a Jew, how can you compel the Gentiles to live like Jews?" We ourselves, who are Jews by birth and not Gentile sinners, yet who know that a man is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ, and not by works of the law, because by works of the law shall no one be justified. But if, in our endeavor to be justified in Christ, we ourselves were found to be sinners, is Christ then an agent of sin? Certainly not! But if I build up again those things which I tore down, then I prove myself a transgressor. For I through the law died to the law, that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me; and the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. I do not nullify the grace of God; for if justification were through the law, then Christ died to no purpose.

At that time, one of the Pharisees asked Jesus to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee's house, and took his place at table. And behold, a woman of the city, who was a sinner, when she learned that he was at table in the Pharisee's house, brought an alabaster flask of ointment, and standing behind him at his feet, weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears, and wiped them with the hair of her head, and kissed his feet, and anointed them with the ointment. Now when the Pharisee who had invited him saw it, he said to himself, "If this man were a prophet, he would have known who and what sort of woman this is who is touching him, for she is a sinner." And Jesus answering said to him, "Simon, I have something to say to you."

And he answered, "What is it, Teacher?" "A certain creditor had two debtors; one owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. When they could not pay, he forgave them both. Now which of them will love him more?" Simon answered, "The one, I suppose, to whom he forgave more." And he said to him, "You have judged rightly." Then turning toward the woman he said to Simon, "Do you see this woman? I entered your house, you gave me no water for my feet, but she has wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. You gave me no kiss, but from the time I came in she has not ceased to kiss my feet. You did not anoint my head with oil, but she has anointed my feet with ointment. Therefore I tell you, her sins, which are many, are forgiven, for she loved much; but he who is forgiven little, loves little." And he said to her, "Your sins are forgiven." Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, "Who is this, who even forgives sins?" And he said to the woman, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace."

From the Rector’s Notebook:

By Canon Noel A. Burke Greetings: Today is being commemorated as Fathers’ Day. It is indeed a sociological moment as we consider the context of the modern family.

We do not have to look far to see that somewhere along the line the institution of family seems to have gone off course, thankfully not for the most part.

Indeed we continue to raise children who are well mannered, well adjusted and oriented to the service of humanity.

On the other hand, in the midst of educational and other opportunities across the spectrum in Barbados, we seem to be raising persons who by their behaviour do not want to build on the foundation that our foreparents have laid.

One may easily ask the question: what is the origin of the deviance and the violence so often exhibited in Barbados and captured on the ubiquitous mobile phones and uploaded within seconds to the various social networks.

The chance to view such angry and vicious attacks on each other by a minority of our school children must cause us to look in on ourselves. !

This does not imply that we individually are responsible for the aggression that we sometimes witness; however collectively as a society we must still ask what has happened to create the anger so often demonstrated.

There must be the effort on the part of us all to teach our young people that they do not have to resort to violence to sort out petty squabbles.

As adults we have to ensure that we are not passing bad examples on to our children, even if not by violent acts; but by aggressive attitudes and words.

Those of us especially within the christian church must take heed unto ourselves how we speak and how we respond to difficult or anticipated situations.

Paul the Apostle in writing to the Colossians states !

Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, ! so that you may know !how you ought to answer every ! one. Colossians 4:6 On this Father’s Day let us pay attention to attitudes in the home, at work and where ever we may be. Let us remember that the outbursts of bad behaviour that we see is that which is learnt from bad examples around us.

Let us all uphold the highest standards in home and family life following the example of the Holy Family of Nazareth. May God bless all Fathers today both living and departed and give us all the grace to raise our children to be decent, gentle and Godfearing. !

Provincial Statement on Same-Sex Unions April 25, 2013 The House of Bishops and Standing Committee of the Church in the Province of the West Indies, meeting at Bamford House in Barbados, extend greetings to the faithful of the Province and the leaders of our nations charged with responsibility for governance.

In the course of our deliberations, we have taken note of the fact that our nations are facing serious economic and social challenges, which are currently taxing the human and material resourcefulness of our peoples, a situation complicated by developments in the global economy.

We have taken note also of trends within countries of the developed world and international fora, in which these countries exercise a controlling interest, where matters related to human sexuality have been elevated to the level of human rights and are being promulgated as positions which must be accepted globally.

Frequently, failure to conform by developing nations like our own, have resulted in the threat of various sanctions, including the withholding of economic aid.

More specifically, there is a re-definition of gender to accommodate gay, lesbian and transgendered people, and the creation of a plurality of definitions which leaves the issue of gender to self-definition, thereby dismissing traditional definition of male and female. " !
