A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew Glory to Christ our Saviour.

Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but the boat by this time was many furlongs distant from the land, beaten by the waves; for the wind was against them. And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out for fear. But immediately he spoke to them, saying, "Take heart, it is I; have no fear." And Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, bid me come to you on the water." He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus; but when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, "Lord, save me." Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, "O man of little faith, why did you doubt?" And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God." The Gospel of Christ.

FROM THE RECTOR’S NOTEBOOK Greetings:

Our Crop Over Festival is now behind us and for a little while we in Barbados will reflect and discuss the events surrounding this premier national cultural event.

!

We would have to congratulate the various competitors highlighting those who would have won prizes and delighted us both with social commentary and party songs.

!

It is important to pay due tribute to all calypsonians, other artistes, the bands, the judges, those who provided security and support services and all those who helped to make our festival unique and enjoyable.

!

We must single out the Youth Explosion Crop Over Band. You may remember that the management and members of this band launched their entry into the 2014 Crop Over Festival as they have been doing for the past six years with a service here in the St. David’s Church.

!

Mr. Quincy Jones, the band leader happily reports that Youth Explosion Band attained of prizes in many categories.

We continue to wish them every success as they continue to be one of the better presented bands passing through the National Stadium.

There are still some questions to be raised regarding our Crop Over Festival, some of these were mentioned in a recent Facebook post by Dr. Kenneth Connell of the Faculty of Medical Sciences (Cave Hill) who asked, “Are we now defining this young nationhood with "quick fix", text vibe and "stab and juck" lyrics?”

!

There are indeed instances in which persons take lyrics, attire and behaviour to extreme levels. We must ever be watchful of these trends; while maintaining all that is good and wholesome.

!

We still have to brain-storm ideas as to how to make the king and queen of the crop more visible and more central in the annual Crop Over activities since it is persons such as these hard working folks who make this festival possible in the first place.

!

We thank God for all human labour, for pride and industry in daily life and work and that we may always recognise the presence of God in all of our activities both sacred and secular.

It features The Royal Barbados Police Force Band, The St. David Augmented Choir and other guest artistes.

Health Corner!

This week, we will take a break from nutrition and address the issue of household chemicals.

The use of chemicals has become so part of our daily household chores that sometimes we become complacent to the danger they can pose to our health!

The next few weeks we will concentrate on household chemicals, their safe use and disposal. One of the most widely used cleaners is chlorine bleach; here are a few things that you should know:! ➢ DO NOT MIX BLEACH AND AMMONIA PRODUCTS! The active ingredient in chlorine bleach is Sodium hypochlorite. When mixed with ammonia products (e.g. toilet and window cleaners), toxic gases called chloramines are produced. Exposure to these gases can cause: coughing, shortness of breath, chest pain, wheezing and irritation to the throat, nose and eyes. ! ! ➢ DO NOT MIX BLEACH AND ACIDS! When chlorine bleach is mixed with an acid, chlorine gas is given off. This gas irritates the eyes, throat and nose, even at low levels.

Chlorine gas causes coughing, breathing problems and at higher levels can cause chest pain, vomiting and fluid in the lungs. Death can result from exposure to chlorine gas at very high levels. It was used as a chemical weapon in World War I. !

!

Never mix chlorine bleach with any other household or cleaning products.!

!

Hydrogen Peroxide is as a safe alternative to chlorine bleach in the laundry and as a household disinfectant.!
