A Reading from the Word of God written in Genesis Chapter 45 beginning at the 1st verse.
Then Joseph could no longer control himself before all those who stood by him, and he cried out, "Send everyone away from me." So no one stayed with him when Joseph made himself known to his brothers. And he wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard it, and the household of Pharaoh heard it. Joseph said to his brothers, "I am Joseph. Is my father still alive?" But his brothers could not answer him, so dismayed were they at his presence. Then Joseph said to his brothers, "Come closer to me." And they came closer. He said, "I am your brother, Joseph, whom you sold into Egypt. And now do not be distressed, or angry with yourselves, because you sold me here; for God sent me before you to preserve life. For the famine has been in the land these two years; and there are five more years in which there will be neither plowing nor harvest. God sent me before you to preserve for you a remnant on earth, and to keep alive for you many survivors. So it was not you who sent me here, but God; he has made me a father to Pharaoh, and lord of all his house and ruler over all the land of Egypt. Hurry and go up to my father and say to him, 'Thus says your son Joseph, God has made me lord of all Egypt; come down to me, do not delay. You shall settle in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near me, you and your children and your children's children, as well as your flocks, your herds, and all that you have. I will provide for you !3
there--since there are five more years of famine to come--so that you and your household, and all that you have, will not come to poverty. And now your eyes and the eyes of my brother Benjamin see that it is my own mouth that speaks to you. You must tell my father how greatly I am honored in Egypt, and all that you have seen. Hurry and bring my father down here. Then he fell upon his brother Benjamin's neck and wept, while Benjamin wept upon his neck. And he kissed all his brothers and wept upon them; and after that his brothers talked with him. Reader: ALL:

THE EPISTLE READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in Romans Chapter 11 beginning at the 1st verse. I ask, then, has God rejected his people? By no means! I myself am an Israelite, a descendant of Abraham, a member of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. Just as you were once disobedient to God but have now received mercy because of their disobedience, so they have now been disobedient in order that, by the mercy shown to you, they too may now receive mercy. For God has imprisoned all in disobedience so that he may be merciful to all. Reader: ALL:

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew Glory to Christ our Saviour. !4
Jesus left that place and went away to the district of Tyre and Sidon. Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shouting, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is tormented by a demon.” But he did not answer her at all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, "Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us.” He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” But she came and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, help me.” He answered, "It is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs.” She said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table.” Then Jesus answered her, "Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish." And her daughter was healed instantly. The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord

From The Rector’s Notebook Greetings: Capital Punishment often referred to as the death penalty is one of the most emotive topics in any national debate. Often when a member of the family is murdered or when society feels as though the behaviour of a few seem out of hand the cry goes out to hang people or perhaps in the case of Barbados to resume hanging. Capital punishment is a controversial way of dealing with violent criminals. The main alternative to the death penalty is life in prison. There are strong and compelling arguments both for and against the death penalty. Some are of the view that it is a deterrent and an effective way of dealing with those found guilty of murder; while others hold the view that it perpetuates a cycle of death, creates greater pain in the community and leaves even more persons sorrowful over the death of loved ones. Across world history we would realize that capital punishment has been inflicted for a variety of crimes, such as stealing, adultery, homosexual acts, being stubborn and rebellious towards parents (Deuteronomy 21:21) or even cutting down a tree. The first recognized death penalty laws date back to eighteenth century B.C. and can be found in the Code of King Hammaurabi of Babylon. Draco’s Code of Athens, in seventh century B.C., made death the lone punishment for all crimes. !6
Hence, the term draconian has come to be used to refer to any unusually harsh law. Throughout history methods of execution have included practices such as crucifixion, stoning, drowning, burning at the stake, impaling, and beheading. Today capital punishment is typically accomplished by lethal gas or injection, electrocution, shooting and of course in Barbados, hanging.
Very often, in matters of ethics, persons look to scripture and so true they do so to find biblical warrant for supporting the death penalty by quoting the old Mosaic law, the Lex Talionis - the law of retaliation And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life, Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, Exodus 21:23-24 (see also Leviticus 24: 20, Deuteronomy 19: 21) The challenge of using the lex talionis for the the 21st century interpreter is that it comes first of all out of a tribal context in which there is no police or law courts as we know them and persons would have felt vindicated in seeking revenge for a wrong done to a family member. One may even have gone to an extreme in seeking such revenge so as to end the life of someone who may have simply struck a family member on the cheek. However, the lex talionis was meant to be a rather merciful law to prevent extremes of punishment. It was arguably an advancement for the cause of !7
justice designed to prevent personal actions of retaliation and revenge. A major question for the Christian is just how did Jesus deal with the lex talionis. Fortunately we have Jesus’ teaching in the Sermon on the Mount, in which his message is one of forgiveness “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’ But I say to you, Do not resist an evildoer. But if anyone strikes you on the right cheek, turn the other also; Matthew 5: 38 - 39 We may support capital punishment; but it would be testing the Bible to use Scripture to buttress the view. Some arguments most often cited in support of capital punishment are that the threat of executions deters capital crimes more effectively than imprisonment. Any punishment can be an effective deterrent only if it is consistently and promptly carried out; however there are considerable and unavoidable delays in carrying out the death sentence. These safeguards often prevent innocent persons from being executed which brings us to the other point about error. Unlike all other criminal punishments, the death penalty is uniquely irrevocable. Some put forward the case that the death penalty prevents the murderer from ever committing such a crime again; but perhaps we can take the argument wider and ask whether we are promoting a culture of death. !8
The Christian Church has a duty to proclaim that YAHWEH is the Lord of life and that as challenging as it may be we are called to value all life. Let us continue to lift Barbados before the throne of God that those whose task it is to make decisions on our behalf may utilise the deepest wisdom and charitable consideration as they deal with life and death issues. HEALTH CORNER: BY SOPHIA MARSHALL, Ph.d WEIGHT LOSS PLATEAU It is absolutely frustrating to reach a plateau when trying to lose weight! You have been watching your diet, exercising and doing all the right things but you seemed stuck at the same point. Don’t give up, relax, step back and let’s look at the situation. Many times, only small changes are needed to get you shedding pounds again. Here are a few suggestions: Increase your cardio Instead of briskly walking 6 laps, try 7 or add an extra day of cardio workout. This may burn the extra calories that you need to lose some more body fat. Vary the intensity of your workouts When we speak of intensity, we refer to how hard a person works to do the activity. If you vary the intensity of your workout during the week, you are more likely to burn fat more efficiently. Moderate intensity: You're working hard enough to raise your heart rate and break into a sweat. You're working at a moderate intensity if you're able to talk but unable to sing the words to a song. Vigorous Intensity: You are breathing rapidly and only able to speak in short phrases. Your heart rate is substantially increased and you are likely to be sweating. For weight loss, the more intense your exercise, or the longer you exercise, the more calories you burn. Try new exercises Vary your workouts by introducing completely new exercises or making small changes to your current movements.
