THE COLLECT Almighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us a sacrifice for sin, and also an example of godly life: Give us grace to receive thankfully the fruits of his redeeming work, and to follow daily in the blessed steps of his most holy life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. THE LESSON A Reading from the Word of God written in the Book of Proverbs Chapter 9 beginning at the 1st verse Wisdom has built her house, she has set up her seven pillars. She has slaughtered her beasts, she has mixed her wine, she has also set her table. She has sent out her maids to call from the highest places in the town, "Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!" To him who is without sense she says, "Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed. Leave simpleness, and live, and walk in the way of insight." Reader: ALL:

Here ends the Reading. Thanks be to God.

PSALM 34: 9-14 9.

Fear the Lord, you that are his saints,* for those who fear him lack nothing.

10.

The young lions lack and suffer hunger,* but those who seek the Lord lack nothing that is good.

11.

Come, children, and listen to me;* I will teach you the fear of the Lord.

12.

Who among you loves life* and desires long life to enjoy prosperity?

13.

Keep your tongue from evil-speaking* and your lips from lying words.

14.

Turn from evil and peace and pursue it.

good;*

Glory to the Father, and to the Son;*and to the Holy Spirit; As it was in the beginning is now:*and shall be forever. Amen. THE EPISTLE A Reading from the Word of God written in the Letter to the Ephesians Chapter 5 beginning at the 15th verse Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart, always and for everything giving thanks in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father. Reader: All:

Here ends the Reading Thanks be to God.

THE HOLY GOSPEL The Lord be with you. And also with you. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John Glory to Christ our Saviour. At that time, Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you have no life in you; he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is food indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats me will live because of me. This is the bread which came down from heaven, not such as the fathers ate and died; he who eats this bread will live for ever." This he said in the synagogue, as he taught at Caper'na-um. The Gospel of Christ Praise to Christ our Lord. From the Rector’s Notebook Greetings: It is great to be back from holiday and to be at the Altar and in the Pulpit and to greet the congregation once again. Let me express thanks to the Dean Emeritus, The Very Rev’d William Dixon, CBE, who was Priest-inCharge during my absence.

Thanks also to the Wardens, and the Lay Liturgical Leaders who offered valuable assistance with worship and the various tasks in the parish. I extend personal congrats to those who celebrated birthdays and/or anniversaries during the past four weeks and offer condolences to those who have lost loved ones. We continue to remember the faithful departed especially the most recent and pray that God almighty will grant rest and peace eternal. We are still in the month of August and that means that many of our members are still away on holiday. We hope that they are all enjoying themselves and that with God’s traveling mercies they will return to us safely. Strangely enough some persons expressed surprise when told that I was on holiday. There were those who said to me that they never knew that priests took holiday. Needless to say that outlook is quite amusing, since priests work basically six days in the context of a given week, taking one day off for rest and recreation. Even the notion of a day off seems odd to some who often ask what does a priest do on a “day off. The answer is simple we do what anyone else would on a free day. Priests of course do far more than celebrate and p r e a c h a t S u n d ay M a s s . W h i l e e x t r e m e l y rewarding, and while most priests live happy and fulfilling lives; the priestly vocation is busy and can be challenging and the time comes when we must

take a break from the daily and weekly round of tasks so that hopefully we can serve in a more effective way. HEALTH CORNER by Dr. Sophia Marshall

Recently at a popular event, there was a shocking realisation of the quantity of alcoholic products that are consumed by our young people, both male and female. There was vodka for breakfast, rum punch for mid-morning snack, brandy for lunch, beer for afternoon snack and jello shots in between each meal! When you drink alcohol, it’s absorbed into your bloodstream and affects every part of your body. In the long term, drinking too much alcohol can have serious effects on the body. Let's consider a few of these effects: Central Nervous System Alcohol can affect parts of the brain that control movement, speech, judgment, and memory. This results in the characteristic signs of drunkenness such as difficulty walking, slurred speech, memory lapses, and impulsive behaviour. Long-term heavy drinking can shrink the frontal lobes of the brain, which impairs thinking skills. Digestive System Alcohol abuse can damage the salivary glands and irritate the mouth and tongue, leading to gum disease, tooth decay, and even tooth loss. Ingestion of excessive alcohol can cause ulcers in the esophagus, acid reflux, and heartburn. Stomach ulcers and inflammation of the stomach lining can occur. The liver can be especially vulnerable because it breaks down alcohol. Long term heavy drinking can lead to the development of diseases such as liver inflammation (alcoholic hepatitis) or severe liver scarring (cirrhosis). Sexual and Reproductive System Erectile dysfunction is a common problem observed in men who use excessive alcohol. Alcohol abuse can also inhibit hormone production, affect testicular function, and cause infertility. Excessive drinking by a woman can disrupt her menstruation and can increase her risk of miscarriage, premature delivery, and stillbirth if pregnant. Immune System Heavy drinking can weaken the immune system and interfere with its defence against viruses, germs, and all types of illness. Chronic alcohol use increases the risk of developing certain cancers such as mouth, esophagus, throat, liver and breast.

Drink responsibly! !10
