THE FIRST READING: READER: A Reading from the Word of God written in 1 King Chapter 19 beginning at the 4th verse.

But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a solitary broom tree. He asked that he might die: ‘It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my ancestors.’ Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep. Suddenly an angel touched him and said to him, ‘Get up and eat.’ He looked, and there at his head was a cake baked on hot stones, and a jar of water. He ate and drank, and lay down again. The angel of the Lord came a second time, touched him, and said, ‘Get up and eat, otherwise the journey will be too much for you.’

So then, putting away falsehood, let all of us speak the truth to our neighbours, for we are members of one another. A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John Glory to Christ our Saviour.

Jesus said to them, ‘I am the bread of life.

Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. Then the Jews began to complain about him because he said, ‘I am the bread that came down from heaven.’ They were saying, ‘Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, “I have come down from heaven”?’ Jesus answered them, ‘Do not complain among yourselves. No one can come to me unless drawn by the Father who sent me; and I will raise that person up on the last day. It is written in the prophets, “And they shall all be taught by God.” Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to me. Not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God; he has seen the Father. Very truly, I tell you, whoever believes has eternal life. I am the bread of life. Your ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died. This is the bread that comes down from heaven, so that one may eat of it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats of this bread will live for ever; and the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.’

From the Rector's Notebook Greetings: During this month of August the Gospel readings are all taken from St. John’s Gospel chapter (6) six which biblical theologians refer to as the “Bread of life Discourse”.

This chapter of St. John’s Gospel speaks to us about our Lord who makes himself available to us as the “Bread of Life”.

Jesus says this directly

“I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty”. St. John 6:35

What this means will be uniquely different for us, though we worship together as members of the pilgrim church in the world.

When we read St. John’s Gospel chapter (6) six in its entirety we realise that for some hearers it meant a journey too tough for them to follow and so they left off from following Jesus.

“Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him”.

St. John 6: 66

For the disciples and others however; this bread was food for the journey; just as the children of Israel were fed with manna in order that they could stay the course and reach the promised land.

Our weekly participation in the Holy Eucharist must not been seen as an escape from the world in which we live in order to make it through the next week; but rather an opportunity for us to be continually changed into the likeness of God forever. !7

One of the awesome values of the Bread of Life Discourse is that it places emphasis on what Jesus does through God Almighty. The peoples’ action is a response to what Jesus has done in the multiplication of the loaves and in feeding the five thousand.

One of my favourite books even before I started to concentrate heavily on the theology of the liturgy is a fascinating text entitled “The Eucharistic Words of Jesus” by Joachim Jeremias.

This is a classic both for New Testament and Liturgical Theologians. Its stimulating study encourages us to see the Eucharist as what God does for us rather than what we do as the worshipping community.

According to Professor Kevin Irwin in his book “Models of the Eucharist” all liturgy is done in response to God’s gracious initiative.

We can often get the impression that the emphasis in liturgy is on the singing, dancing and shouting that we call worship; rather than seeing as all important the life sustaining grace that comes from God in the Blessed Sacrament.

The Bread of Life Discourse on which we reflect this month directs our attention to Jesus and his mighty acts; while we respond in awe to this miracle of Eucharist in which Christ continually gives us his sacred Body and Blood for all eternity.

Let us follow these readings for our own enlightenment and for greater clarity in christian living.

DRINK WATER, DRINK WATER! The hot days are here! Have you been drinking plenty of water?

Have you thought of or researched the reasons why we should drink enough fluids every day?

LET US LOOK AT A FEW IMPORTANT REASONS: Balance of Body Fluids The human body is composed of approximately 60% water.

Bodily fluids are lost throughout the day from breathing, urine, stool and skin evaporation. Water loss from the body is said to be either "sensible" or "insensible". Sensible loss is measurable and you know that you have lost it e.g. urine. Insensible loss cannot be measured directly and you don't know that you have lost it e.g. respiratory loss. The minimal amount of fluid loss from the body that can occur is referred to as the obligatory water loss. These fluids must be replaced to maintain good health.

Hydrate Muscle Cells The imbalance of fluids and electrolytes in the body can result in the onset of muscle fatigue. Think of a grape placed in the sun!

Essentially the cells tend to shrivel and this adversely affects their functions. Not only muscle cells need water though, it is essential for every cell in your body. American College of Sports Medicine recommends that persons drink about 17 ounces (approx. 2 cups) of fluid about 2 hours before exercise. Fluids should be taken early and regularly during exercise to prevent dehydration.

Normal Bowel Movement Your colon tries to compensate for inadequate hydration by pulling water from stools. This action results in constipation.

Drink plenty fluids and keep your colon happy!

Calorie Control Are you trying to lose or maintain your weight? There are no calories in water, so substitute that soda with water or highwater -content foods such as fruits. Drinking water isn't the only way to stay hydrated, add these high water content foods to your diet.

These foods are refreshing, filled with nutrients, and naturally low in calories.
